feat(claude-desktop): per-client model visibility for the Desktop list - #7769
Adds Claude Desktop-only model visibility with per-model selection, search/provider filtering, bulk actions, a policy for newly discovered models, counts, and a preview of the next apply. Other clients and provider-wide visibility remain unchanged. Hidden aliases remain routable, visible family defaults are reselected, and the writer falls back to the full list if all selected models become unavailable. Management writes preserve concurrent edits through a 409 response.
All eleven locales explicitly describe the bulk action as deselecting matching models, including matches beyond Show more. Equal model IDs now prompt users to apply profile changes before restarting Desktop. Saved family-default changes can require an apply even when the IDs stay the same.
Final code head: 1e80051c9721c8db2316a1840bfe5efde91be554. Ordinary dev merge already present: 12ea6f03838471290cac344552032ca0ec65dfee, containing b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf; current origin/dev required no further merge. This follow-up commit retains original author commits and carries co-author attribution.
Fresh Windows validation used Bun 1.4.4, frozen root/GUI installs, OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1, and serial test processes:
Before the locale fix, updated mounted regressions with cd gui; bun test ./tests/claude-desktop-visibility-card.test.tsx — 4 pass / 3 fail on the prior implementation. Failures exposed ambiguous deselection copy and missing apply-before-restart guidance.
After the fix, cd gui; bun test ./tests/claude-desktop-visibility-card.test.tsx ./tests/claude-desktop-visibility.test.ts ./tests/i18n-locales.test.ts ./tests/i18n-language-switch.test.tsx — 31 pass / 0 fail, including bulk behavior beyond six displayed rows, locale key/placeholder parity, and language switching.
bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — 9 pass / 0 fail.
bun run typecheck, bun run lint:gui, bun run --cwd gui lint:i18n, bun run --cwd gui build, bun run structure:check, and git diff --check — exit 0. Vite reports its existing large-chunk warning.
Four remaining correctness/copy threads are fixed and answered with this commit. Three trivial performance/module-organization threads are deferred and resolved under the owner's explicit non-blocking disposition. No performance improvement or benchmark is claimed.
Exact-head hosted checks are reported in the follow-up comment; pending or missing checks are not passing evidence. No workflow dispatch, rerun, or fork-CI approval was performed.
The screenshot is retained evidence from the earlier carry: the actual React page with synthetic data, stored only on pr-assets. It predates this wording correction; no fresh browser screenshot was captured.
Full-suite exception: concurrent carry lanes share this Windows host, and the lane explicitly requires focused tests only. Broader validation is left to required CI. NOT RUN: full bun run test, bun run test:changed, full GUI suite, native Desktop end-to-end apply, large-catalog latency benchmark, fresh browser smoke, cross-platform/release smoke. Backend/docs/privacy checks from the earlier carry were not rerun for this locale-only follow-up.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed. Existing feature guide, API/config reference and structure documentation remain included.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. This follow-up changes locale copy and mounted assertions only; maintainer security review for the broader feature remains separate.
This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:
Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
My PR is ready for review.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Configure which models appear in Claude Desktop, either by selecting specific models or excluding selected ones.
Search and filter models by provider, select models in bulk, and choose how newly discovered models are handled.
Review model counts and a preview of additions or removals before applying changes. Visibility settings persist across catalog refreshes and affect Claude Desktop only.
Documentation
Added guidance for model visibility settings, dashboard controls, and related configuration and API behavior.
Claude Desktop's gateway list carried every available model, and the only
dashboard levers (tier moves, family defaults) did not hide anything. Add
claudeCode.desktopModelVisibility, an include or exclude list of routes that
narrows only the Desktop 3P inferenceModels list.
- The generator filters emitted rows by route after building the full alias
registry, so a running session holding a just-hidden alias still routes.
A hidden family default hands its role to a remaining member; a selection
that would empty the list falls back to the full list.
- Every writer reads it through desktop3pModelOptions: local apply, catalog
refresh, and the hub's Desktop export.
- PUT /api/claude-desktop accepts visibility (omit keeps, null clears) and
refuses a selection with no visible available model. GET returns it with
per-model visible flags and the list the next apply writes; status returns
the applied list.
- Dashboard: per-model checkboxes, search, provider filter, bulk select,
new-model policy, selected/available/applied counts, an added/removed
preview, and a "saved, not applied" status. The two status strings that
read as contradictory now name their scope.
- Invalid hand-edited values fail validation at their own path and salvage
drops only that field.

Walkthrough
The change adds persistent per-route visibility settings for Claude Desktop model lists. The management API saves and reports these settings, and Desktop model generation applies them. The dashboard adds selection controls, filtering, counts, and a preview of model-list changes.
Changes: Claude Desktop model visibility
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Visibility contract and model filtering src/types/config.ts, src/types.ts, src/claude/desktop-model-visibility.ts, src/claude/desktop-3p.ts, src/config/schema/config-schema.ts, src/config/salvage.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-model-visibility.test.ts
The configuration adds an optional include/exclude route selection. Validation parses and normalizes selections. Desktop model generation filters listed models, retains hidden routes in the alias registry, adjusts family defaults, and falls back to the full list when filtering would leave no models.
Management API persistence and state src/server/management/agent-settings-routes.ts, src/server/management/shared.ts, src/claude/desktop-model-visibility.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-model-visibility.test.ts
The API accepts visibility with profile updates, preserves it when omitted, clears it when set to null, and detects concurrent visibility changes. State and status responses include the next listed models and currently applied models.
Dashboard controls and apply status gui/src/pages/claude-desktop-visibility.ts, gui/src/components/ClaudeDesktopVisibility.tsx, gui/src/pages/ClaudeDesktop.tsx, gui/src/styles/claude-page.css, gui/src/i18n/*.ts, gui/tests/claude-desktop-visibility*.test.*, scripts/test-layout/layout.json
The dashboard adds search, provider filtering, bulk and per-model selection, selection counts, and an apply preview. It saves visibility with the profile and distinguishes saved changes from model-list changes that still need applying. Localization and tests cover the controls and status behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Linked issue #7702 is the only active direct target. Its coding requirements are: (1) per-model visibility checkboxes with search, provider filtering, and bulk selection; (2) visibility kept separate from Claude tier mapping and default/quick-task roles; (3) separate selected, available, and applied counts, with unavailable entries not counted ambiguously; (4) persistence across catalog refresh and configuration reapplication, with a stated rule for newly discovered models; (5) a preview of added and removed models with saved-versus-applied status; (6) no change to provider-wide selections or other clients.
Implementation evidence:
gui/src/components/ClaudeDesktopVisibility.tsx provides per-model toggles, search and provider filter, matching-row bulk actions, new-model policy controls, counts, and the added/removed preview (requirements 1, 3, 4, 5).
gui/src/pages/claude-desktop-visibility.ts provides include/exclude normalization, route visibility, new-model policy handling, counts that count explicitly included unavailable models separately, desiredDesktopList, and applyPreview, which returns null when the applied list is unknown (requirements 3, 4, 5).
gui/src/pages/ClaudeDesktop.tsx integrates the draft with profile save and apply and dirty-state detection (requirements 4, 5).
src/claude/desktop-model-visibility.ts and src/claude/desktop-3p.ts filter only the Desktop 3P list, keep hidden aliases decodable, and reselect family defaults (requirements 2, 4, 6).
src/server/management/agent-settings-routes.ts and src/server/management/shared.ts store visibility under claudeCode.desktopModelVisibility, reject selections that hide every available model, return 409 on concurrent edits, and report the next-apply list (requirements 4, 5).
tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-model-visibility.test.ts and the GUI tests cover persistence, refresh and reapply, unavailable models, fallback, previews, validation, and stale writes.
Changes since the previous review: the incremental diff from the named previous revision to head is empty for gui/src/components/ClaudeDesktopVisibility.tsx, gui/src/pages/ClaudeDesktop.tsx, and gui/src/pages/claude-desktop-visibility.ts. The later commits therefore change locale copy, docs, and mounted tests, not these logic paths. The previous line-level evidence for these files is retained. The named previous revision is ambiguous because two previous heads are listed; the empty result applies to the named previous revision only.
No concrete unmet coding requirement is shown. Non-coding items (manual test runs, native Desktop apply, browser smoke, and hosted-check status) are excluded from this verdict.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed areas map to issue #7702 or to support for it:
Config and validation: src/types/config.ts, src/types.ts, src/config/schema/config-schema.ts, src/config/salvage.ts add the claudeCode.desktopModelVisibility field, its parser, and its salvage rule.
Server and API: src/server/management/agent-settings-routes.ts and src/server/management/shared.ts add the visibility PUT and status behavior required by the dashboard.
Desktop writer: src/claude/desktop-3p.ts and src/claude/desktop-model-visibility.ts apply the selection to the Desktop list only.
GUI: the component, page, helpers, styles, and i18n files implement the dashboard workflow. The locale changes update copy for the same feature in all eleven locales.
Tests and test-layout entries cover the new feature.
Docs and structure files (guides, configuration and API references, structure/INDEX.md, structure/manifest.json, structure/clients/claude-desktop-model-visibility.md) document the feature and the required structure map.
The changes do not alter provider-wide selections, other clients, credentials, or inference routing. The latest incremental changes affect locale copy, docs, and mounted tests only. None of the changed areas shows an unrelated change that needs removal. Supporting tests and docs are in scope under the review rules.

Maintainer triage (2026-10-28, against dev 4bf5728):
The Desktop-only model selection remains useful and is not on dev. Thank you for the alias-preservation coverage, both test-layout registrations, and all eleven locale catalogs.
Update onto current dev and resolve the six conflicting files: docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/management-api.md, src/config/salvage.ts, src/config/schema/config-schema.ts, src/server/management/agent-settings-routes.ts, structure/INDEX.md, and structure/manifest.json. Keep the current dev contracts while integrating the visibility mutation in agent-settings-routes.ts, and regenerate the index with bun run structure:index.
Repair the duplicated/truncated description and restore standalone Summary, Verification, and Checklist sections from .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md.
Replace the screenshot placeholder with a real screenshot of the Desktop model list.
Validate the updated head, including tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-model-visibility.test.ts and the two GUI visibility tests, then complete the four readiness boxes. Document any full-suite exception accurately.
After that, a maintainer will review the resolved implementation and approve PR CI. Please keep this in draft until those steps are complete.
Keep saved-versus-applied status independent of draft edits, match the next-apply DTO to the existing writer fallback, and refuse concurrent visibility replacement during discovery. Isolate lifecycle locks and await fixture background work on Windows.
Updated this branch onto current dev as an ordinary merge (your history is preserved): 2c38ebe4f merges dev fdc6dd82d and resolves the six conflicts from the 2026-10-28 triage, keeping dev's contracts (the dev appendOnlyToolLoadingModels schema/salvage entries sit beside desktopModelVisibility; structure/INDEX.md regenerated with bun run structure:index).
Reviewing the integrated diff found three defects, each fixed with a regression that failed first (ac091b7dd):
gui/src/pages/ClaudeDesktop.tsx: editing the draft selection hid the saved-but-not-yet-applied status.
src/server/management/shared.ts: when every selected model disappeared, listed was empty while the writer falls back to the full list; listed now reports what the next apply writes, and the saved intent is unchanged.
src/server/management/agent-settings-routes.ts: a visibility write racing another edit during discovery overwrote it; it now returns the existing 409 conflict.
e17dc9166 documents the 409 in the management API reference. Local, Bun 1.4.4: tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-model-visibility.test.ts 11/0, the two GUI visibility tests 9/0, layout + file-size ratchet 38/0, typecheck, structure:check, lint:gui, lint:i18n, GUI and docs builds, privacy:scan all pass. bun run test:changed did not complete locally (config-schema changes fan out to most of the suite; 900 s limit on a loaded shared host), so that coverage is left to this PR's test changed job. I approved the PR CI runs for this head after checking the diff.
Design questions for the maintainer, not changed here: the default for newly discovered models, the full-list fallback when every selected model is unavailable, and how saved versus temporary effective defaults are presented. Still needed from you: a real screenshot of the Desktop model list, a repaired description with standalone Summary/Verification/Checklist, and the readiness boxes.
Independent review (round 1) at e17dc9166 against dev fdc6dd82d. The six conflict resolutions keep dev's contracts, and the visibility 409 guard and listed fallback behave as intended. One issue blocks:
[P2] gui/src/i18n/en.ts:3646 (and the other locales) — apply a gateway profile, change its default or tier, then click Save without applying. preserveDesktopAppliedState clears the fingerprint (src/claude/desktop-profile.ts:107), so the status becomes stale although the Desktop bytes are unchanged, and the new message then tells the user the file was edited externally. Either restore neutral wording or distinguish "saved changes not yet applied" from confirmed external drift, update all locales, and add a regression for this save-only path.
Still outstanding from triage: a repaired description with standalone Summary/Verification/Checklist, a real screenshot of the Desktop model list, and the readiness boxes.

f005f7dcb5606c0714ee14274a5aaa60fc8f2391: neutral stale-config wording in all eleven locales, with a mounted save-only regression using the real applied-state helper. Changing the family default and saving clears the fingerprint while leaving applied model data unchanged; the banner no longer claims an external edit.
Red → green, Bun 1.4.4 / Windows / OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1: cd gui; bun test ./tests/claude-desktop-visibility-card.test.tsx was 4 pass / 1 fail at the misleading banner assertion before the fix. bun test ./tests/claude-desktop-visibility-card.test.tsx ./tests/claude-desktop-visibility.test.ts is now 10 pass / 0 fail. Backend visibility integration: 11 pass / 0 fail. Layout/tooling/file-size ratchet: 38 pass / 0 fail. Typecheck, GUI lint, i18n lint, GUI build, structure index/check, privacy scan and diff check exit 0.
The description is repaired to standalone template sections and includes a real browser capture of the Desktop component with synthetic API data, hosted only on pr-assets at ff963b5708237d1cb93234b46b9f2c65417a7251. The old failed check was enforce-target: missing UI screenshot. GraphQL reports 0 unresolved inline review threads; this comment answers the independent-review PR comment.
Fresh CodeRabbit follow-up: c0c10b7e11c103565c2346548bc7187ef8b23176 fixes six wording/documentation findings: all-matching bulk labels, profile-file/restart preview wording in all eleven locales, full-list fallback documentation, required profile on visibility PUT, nullable status shape, and on-disk observation scope. Two new mounted regressions failed first (5 pass / 2 fail), then the two GUI visibility files passed 12 / 0. Final ratchet: 9 / 0. Typecheck, GUI lint/i18n/build, structure index/check, privacy scan and docs build exit 0; docs built 593 pages and checked 85,237 internal links. The refreshed screenshot is on pr-assets at fa68d5bb3dba2f12f568e101426e4eb138c68d34.
All nine fresh inline threads are answered; six fixed findings are resolved. The three optional suggestions (GUI membership cache, moving the filesystem reader out of the parsing module, and server operation-local membership Sets) are acknowledged with path:line evidence and remain open for the owner's decision. No scaling benchmark was run, and these suggestions are not claimed disproved. The readiness boxes for findings/review remain unchecked pending that decision. Owner question: accept those three as separate follow-ups (yes/no)?
NOT RUN: full suite, test:changed, full GUI suite, native Desktop end-to-end apply, large-catalog latency benchmark, cross-platform/release smoke. Focused validation is the shared-host exception requested for this carry; broader checks remain with CI. No PR merge, CI approval, label change, workflow dispatch or rerun was performed.

bun run typecheck, bun run lint:gui, bun run --cwd gui lint:i18n, bun run --cwd gui build, bun run structure:check, git diff --check — exit 0. Build retains the existing chunk-size warning.
The description was updated once for this head, retaining attribution, prior screenshot evidence, and the full-suite exception. One post-push gh pr checks inspection showed label, resolve-pr, and enforce-target pending, hygiene passing, and CodeRabbit skipped; required test checks were not reported. That is incomplete CI evidence. This lane did not approve fork CI, dispatch/rerun workflows, or merge.
NOT RUN: full bun run test, bun run test:changed, full GUI suite (explicit shared-host exception), fresh browser screenshot/smoke, native Desktop apply, large-catalog benchmark, cross-platform/release smoke. Backend/docs/privacy checks were not rerun for this locale-only follow-up. Broader validation remains with required CI.
