Summary

  • Problem: Enrolling a Remote Link Child previously required a pre-running standalone Bun OpenCodex proxy (~100–217 MB footprint) on the Child host (src/server/management/link-enrollment.ts), and ocx disconnect recycled into a persistent standalone daemon (src/client/runtime.ts), making disposable SSH devboxes, containers, and ephemeral VMs impractical.
  • Resulting behavior: Adds native/ocx-child (standalone Rust crate compiling to an 878 KiB / 899,216-byte stripped ocx-child binary with zero Bun/Node runtime dependency) and Home-side ephemeral-child discovery, enrollment, ocx sync fan-out, OCX-6 parity, and teardown integration:
    • Before: ocx link add <alias> failed with remote_ocx_missing or child_restart_unsupported unless full ocx was already serving standalone mode on the Child, and DELETE /api/link/:id left a standalone proxy daemon behind.
    • After: Home probes every full ocx candidate first and falls back to ocx-child (~/.local/bin, ~/.cache/opencodex/bin, Windows %LOCALAPPDATA%\opencodex\bin, and PATH). On a clean detached ocx-child host, POST /api/link/apply verifies <childPort> is free, pipes the link credential via stdin (connect --link --key-stdin), starts ocx-child serve (restart), and verifies /healthz + authenticated /v1/catalog callback. Home ocx sync fan-out (sync --expect-link <id> --json) refreshes opencodex-catalog.json and models_cache.json, rolls over ocx-child serve (runtimeStartedAt >= lastApplyAt), and posts OCX-6 child-parity immediately (or exits 5 with child_link_mismatch JSON on mismatch/busy lock). DELETE /api/link/:id (and offline ocx-child detach / disconnect) restores ~/.codex/config.toml and catalog files across #1798 comment-stripping rewrites and exits with zero leftover background daemon.
  • Cross-runtime conformance (INV-LINK-CHILD-01): tests/fixtures/link/ocx-child-conformance.json locks 74 golden vectors across both cargo test and bun test covering route admission, framing/header stripping, link-relay-auth v2 HMAC proofs, OCX-6 appliedCodexSettingsDigest, child-parity bounds, and two-tier #1798 journal round-trips.

Security Review Summary

  • Loopback-only listener & Host/Origin anti-rebinding: ocx-child serve binds strictly to 127.0.0.1:<listenPort> and enforces is_allowed_loopback_request_origin (127.0.0.1, localhost, [::1]) before relaying or answering /v1/responses WebSocket Upgrade (403 origin_rejected on non-loopback Host/Origin).
  • Default-deny allowlist & request-smuggling defense: Admits only linkRouteAllowed and read-only linkManagementRouteAllowed routes; caps request/response headers at 64 KiB (431/502) and bodies at 256 MiB (16 MiB for management reads); rejects Upgrade (426 on /v1/responses WebSocket upgrade, 404/400 elsewhere), simultaneous Content-Length + Transfer-Encoding, duplicate or non-digit Content-Length, non-chunked Transfer-Encoding, obs-fold, and CR/LF header injection (400).
  • Caller credential stripping: Strips all CALLER_CREDENTIAL_HEADERS (authorization, api-key, x-api-key, x-goog-api-key, x-opencodex-api-key, chatgpt-account-id, cookie), hop-by-hop headers, and Connection-nominated tokens before attaching the Home link key.
  • Same-socket link-relay-auth v2 mutual HMAC-SHA256: Derives the 32-byte raw key SHA-256(token), sends credential-free GET /.well-known/opencodex/link-relay-auth?version=2&... on a fresh TcpStream, verifies 204 + 0-byte body + constant-time x-opencodex-link-proof (and optional x-opencodex-link-connection-proof), and dispatches the single bound request with x-opencodex-link-session: <nonce> on that exact TcpStream without pooling or silent reconnects.
  • 0600 secret/journal hygiene & fail-closed detach: Reads {apiKeyId, key} from stdin (4 KiB cap) into SecretBytes with volatile zeroing on drop; stores $OPENCODEX_HOME/child/{link-key,state.json,codex-journal.json} via 0700 dir + 0600 create_new temp-write + fsync + atomic rename with symlink rejection; refuses attach on full-ocx state, busy foreign ports, or external model_provider, and fails closed (exit 4) on corrupt/tampered detach conflicts.
  • SSH argv & Windows Job containment: Reuses quoteRemote single-quoting on POSIX and deflated base64 JSON data inside OCX_JOB_SOURCE kill-on-close Job (<= 8000 UTF-16LE base64 chars; measured 7,420 chars on windowsPinnedSyncArgv) on Windows, plus before.code === 255 SSH transport-drop refusal in link-enrollment.ts.

Walkthrough

Adds a standalone Rust ocx-child binary for ephemeral Remote Link Child hosts. It provides an authenticated relay, local Codex configuration and offline restoration, daemon lifecycle commands, Home discovery and enrollment integration, sync parity reporting, conformance tests, and documentation.

Changes: Ephemeral Child remote-link flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Child contracts and conformance
native/ocx-child/src/state.rs, native/ocx-child/src/codex_settings.rs, native/ocx-child/src/parity.rs, src/link/ephemeral-child.ts, tests/fixtures/link/ocx-child-conformance.json, tests/clients/link-ocx-child-conformance.test.ts, native/ocx-child/tests/conformance.rs
Adds Child state, settings, and parity contracts, plus TypeScript predicates. Shared vectors and Rust and TypeScript tests cover routes, framing, authentication, settings digests, parity parsing, and journal behavior.
Child configuration and recovery journal
native/ocx-child/src/platform.rs, native/ocx-child/src/toml_surgeon.rs, native/ocx-child/src/journal.rs
Adds private atomic storage, file locks, managed TOML edits, and journaled attach, sync, and offline detach. Detach restores unchanged files or surgically removes managed values, and reports catalog conflicts.
Authenticated HTTP relay
native/ocx-child/src/http_wire.rs, native/ocx-child/src/relay_auth.rs, native/ocx-child/src/routes.rs, native/ocx-child/src/relay.rs
Adds loopback route checks, bounded HTTP parsing and streaming, credential stripping, and same-socket HMAC preflight and relay requests.
CLI and daemon lifecycle
native/ocx-child/src/cli.rs, native/ocx-child/src/daemon.rs, native/ocx-child/src/lib.rs, native/ocx-child/src/main.rs, native/ocx-child/Cargo.toml, native/ocx-child/tests/relay_and_lifecycle.rs, package.json

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

fetch_home_authenticated uses read_bounded_body for responses with BodyFraming::None, which returns empty bytes rather than reading a connection-delimited HTTP/1 response.

Attach or sync treats the catalog as empty and fails even though Home sent a valid catalog body.

This can occur when: Home returns a valid Connection: close catalog response without Content-Length or Transfer-Encoding.

Review comments at
@devlog/_plan/261107_ocx_child_ephemeral_link/010_wp1_conformance_contract.md:
- Line 122: Update the verifier’s test command to run the link-prefixed
conformance suite, and align the suite and registration names with that same
test name. Preserve the other test targets and command options unchanged.

Review comments at @docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/remote-link.md:
- Line 194: Update the link-removal guidance around `ocx-child detach` and
`ocx-child disconnect` to distinguish Child-side cleanup from Home-side
revocation: explain that offline detach leaves the Home link record and key in
place, and instruct operators to also run `ocx link revoke` on Home. When the
Child is unreachable, include the documented `ocx link revoke --link-id <id>
--force --yes` command.
- Line 194: Update the `ocx sync --expect-link --json` description to qualify
OCX-6 parity reporting: stale syncs skip the parity post, and other syncs post
on a best-effort basis, so Home may show an older or absent report. Note that
the relay also reports periodically; do not imply every sync reports parity
successfully.
- Line 192: Update the Windows prerequisites in the remote-link guide to allow a
Windows Child to use either ocx.exe or ocx-child.exe, consistent with the
installation options above. Describe the PowerShell helper as containing the
selected executable.

Review comments at @docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/lifecycle.md:
- Line 1328: Update the lightweight `ocx-child` lifecycle documentation to state
that a successful `sync` starts `ocx-child serve` when no relay is running, even
if settings are unchanged. Scope the “nothing is started” statement to full
Children so it does not imply this exception applies to them.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/cli.rs:
- Around line 253-268: Update the attach flow around read_child_state and
ensure_port_available_for_attach to preserve the previous child state and stop
its relay when the listen port changes, before replacing that state. Use the
existing lifecycle mechanism to identify and stop the old relay; keep the prior
state intact until it has been stopped.
- Around line 855-879: Update the status path around probe_local_healthz so it
reports the proxy as running only when the health response matches the Child
service, role, Child marker, and requested port, and—when saved daemon identity
is available—matches that identity. Use the existing health-response and
saved-state contracts to perform these checks; preserve foreground serving
behavior.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/codex_settings.rs:
- Around line 49-52: Update the Rust reasoning_effort validation for
sub.reasoning_effort to match the TypeScript parser’s accepted values, so values
such as "HIGH" are rejected before they can be written to config.toml. Add
cross-runtime rejection tests that verify the Rust and TypeScript validators
agree, using the TypeScript parser’s actual validation rules.
- Around line 45-47: Update the Rust model validator that checks `sub.model` to
reject the same forbidden characters as `safeLabel`, including U+001B, before
settings can be applied. Add a regression test confirming a model containing
U+001B is rejected.
- Around line 63-65: Update the model and Home label length validation in the
settings checks to count trimmed UTF-16 code units rather than UTF-8 bytes,
matching the TypeScript limits while preserving the existing maximums. Add
Unicode boundary tests, including multibyte characters, to verify values at and
beyond each limit.
- Around line 17-20: Update the `fetch_home_settings_doc` deserialization and
validation flow so a document is rejected when it omits `fastMode`,
`multiAgentMode`, or `subagentDefaults`; the `Option` fields in the settings
struct cannot distinguish omission from an explicit null, so track key presence
during deserialization before accepting the document. Preserve the existing
handling of present values and ensure incomplete documents are rejected before
`apply_attach_or_sync` applies any settings.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/daemon.rs:
- Around line 125-164: Update stop_owned_daemon to return an error whenever
shutdown is not verified after the graceful and available termination attempts,
including when the PID is gone or unavailable but is_port_bound(port) remains
true. Return success only after confirming the listener is down and any verified
PID has exited, so cmd_detach preserves recovery state on failure.
- Around line 119-159: Update the verified_pid selection and force_terminate_pid
flow so a PID is signaled only after independent verification that it belongs to
the owned daemon; do not treat Child-shaped /healthz data as ownership evidence
when daemon_pid is absent. If ownership cannot be established, fail closed
without signaling the PID.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/http_wire.rs:
- Around line 546-558: Validate the two bytes read into crlf in the chunk-relay
loop before reading the next chunk; if they are not CRLF, return an InvalidData
error. Ensure this error exits before the final-chunk write so the relay does
not complete a malformed response.
- Around line 513-516: In the chunk-reading flow around reader.read_line, treat
EOF before the upstream terminating chunk as an UnexpectedEof error instead of
breaking and allowing a downstream terminator to be emitted. Add a regression
test confirming that EOF after a nonzero chunk closes the response without a
terminating chunk.
- Around line 422-456: Bound chunk-size line reads and trailer reads in both
read_bounded_body and stream_upstream_to_chunked_client so unterminated metadata
cannot grow memory or hold a worker indefinitely. Enforce a finite byte limit
while reading, including across trailer lines, and return an appropriate error
when the limit is exceeded; reuse an existing limit if available, otherwise
establish a suitable bound without changing body-size handling.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/journal.rs:
- Around line 410-434: Update offline_detach to propagate cache restoration
failures instead of ignoring them, and retain the journal and saved pre-attach
cache bytes until restoration succeeds so disconnect reports failure. Make
retries safe when earlier restoration steps have already completed, preserving
the existing behavior for successfully restored files.
- Around line 289-296: Before the catalog write in the sync flow, verify its
current contents against the journaled hash and refuse sync without overwriting
the catalog when ownership has changed; preserve the existing conflict
safeguards and add a regression test covering an external catalog edit during
attachment, rejected sync, and detach preserving that edit.
- Around line 289-321: Update the attach flow that builds ChildJournalV1 and
calls write_journal so a recovery record containing the original file state is
persisted before any Codex files are replaced. Handle failures at each
intermediate write by preserving a usable recovery path and restoring original
bytes where safe, so attach errors cannot leave replacements that offline detach
treats as NotAttached.
- Around line 406-426: Update the models-cache restore branch in the detach flow
to detect changes made after attach before writing the pre-attach snapshot.
Reconcile the current cache with the snapshot so newer native entries are
preserved while Child-only models are removed; use the existing journal state
and cache representation to distinguish these entries, and avoid overwriting the
cache when that distinction cannot be established.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/parity.rs:
- Around line 77-78: Update the parity parser around LinkChildParityReport
deserialization to accept JSON decimal and exponent values when they represent
safe integers, matching the TypeScript parser. Normalize or otherwise handle
these values before deserialization while preserving the existing range checks,
and add decimal and exponent cases to the shared fixtures.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/platform.rs:
- Around line 236-247: Update the non-Unix directory setup in the function
containing reject_symlink to establish and verify a Windows DACL that restricts
access to the current user before any child storage files are written; fail
closed if this cannot be confirmed. Ensure temporary files are created with
private permissions as well, preserving the existing symlink rejection.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/relay.rs:
- Around line 548-566: Update the readiness flow after
open_authenticated_upstream to use only the current preflight’s
connection_generation; remove the fallback to shared.last_generation so a
missing generation remains unknown. Ensure the readiness response omits
connectionGeneration when gen_opt is None.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/toml_surgeon.rs:
- Around line 662-670: Update the `[agents]` cleanup logic so comment-only,
unowned tables are preserved when applying Home defaults; treat user comments as
remaining user content rather than ignoring them when deciding whether to delete
the table. Remove the table and its managed marker only when no user-owned
content remains, while preserving existing managed-table cleanup behavior.
- Around line 54-75: Update toml_escape_basic_string to escape all TOML control
characters, not just newline, carriage return, and tab, using TOML’s required
escape representation. Update parse_toml_quoted_string to decode those same
escapes so sync and detach preserve the original string values.
- Around line 506-548: Update the sync and detach flow that uses
upsert_table_bool to preserve the original assignment line when Home first
replaces it with fast_mode = false. On detach, restore that line only if the
current assignment still matches Home’s last-written value; leave subsequent
user edits unchanged.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/tests/conformance.rs:
- Around line 416-434: Update the conflict-vector checks around `offline_detach`
in the conformance test to snapshot the bytes of `config.toml`, the catalog, and
`codex-journal.json` before the detach attempt, then compare each file’s bytes
after every `Conflict`. Preserve the existing outcome assertions while ensuring
a refused detach leaves all three files unchanged.
- Around line 305-314: Update the conformance test around apply_attach_or_sync
to verify the applied feature and subagent values after each attach or sync
operation and before detach. Derive expected values from the corresponding
sync_set or fixture row, and use the test’s existing mechanism for reading the
resulting settings.

Review comments at @src/link/ephemeral-child.ts:
- Around line 27-29: The ephemeral-child predicate accepts missing or null
runtimeRole values, but its narrowed type does not represent them. Update the
projected type used by the predicate to preserve the nullish runtimeRole values
alongside the existing role options, and add tests covering both missing and
null inputs.

Review comments at @src/link/ssh-argv.ts:
- Around line 158-159: Preserve the executable kind recorded during enrollment:
update the enrollment and lifecycle-command flow around the `try_ocx` candidate
loop so later sync and deletion target the enrolled `ocx-child`, even if a full
`ocx` becomes available. Ensure sync does not silently skip the Child and
deletion completes the relay and Codex cleanup; retain the existing behavior for
other executable kinds.

Review comments at @structure/overview.md:
- Line 322: Update the invariant binding for the link-ocx-child-conformance test
so it covers Rust digest conformance as well as TypeScript fixture checks; if
that test cannot verify Rust conformance, mark the invariant unbound in
grace.unboundInvariants instead.

Review comments at @structure/remote-link.md:
- Line 191: Update the POST /api/link/apply contract in the remote-link
documentation to reflect current behavior: a foreign listener returning HTTP 404
is not rejected before key issuance; enrollment proceeds until ocx-child connect
detects the occupied port, after which Home compensates. Do not claim that this
case is refused during preflight.

Review comments at @tests/clients/link-ephemeral-child-discovery.test.ts:
- Around line 60-61: Update the PATH setup in both tests using Bun.spawnSync so
discovery uses a controlled private PATH that provides the required shell
utilities without exposing a host ocx; preserve the fixture’s intended discovery
behavior and ensure the E2E exercises the Rust binary.
- Around line 33-39: Add candidate-selection coverage for both `windowsOcxArgv`
and `windowsPinnedSyncArgv`: verify each selects `ocx-child.exe` when `ocx.exe`
is unavailable, and prefers `ocx.exe` when both executables are runnable. Use
the existing test setup and selection behavior without changing unrelated
assertions.

Review comments at @tests/clients/link-ocx-child-conformance.test.ts:
- Around line 348-352: Update the corrupt_managed_span_refused oracle to return
currentCatalog for finalCatalog, and set that fixture’s expectedFinalCatalog to
the injected sample so the Rust runner verifies the exact catalog bytes.
- Around line 409-415: Update this chunked-vector conformance case to send the
request through the listener ingress rather than relying on header preprocessing
around relayLinkDataRequest. Assert the listener’s response and the decoded body

sync flow in journal.rs records a new digest before writing the cache. In
offline_detach, use the preserved digest to remove the prior cache only when its
contents still match, retaining the external-writer safeguard; update the
crash-recovery test to verify the previous cache is restored and removed.
- Line 31: Correct the crash scenario in the conformance test around
`offline_detach`: model the state after the v2 catalog write but before the
cache write, and assert the catalog and cache state before detaching. Update
cache recovery so detach removes the cache left by this interrupted attach and
restores the pre-attach state, while preserving any externally changed cache;
assert the removal and preservation behavior in the test.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/src/journal.rs:
- Line 268: Update the journal hash rotation around
prev.latest_injected_config_sha256 so failed syncs retain the last known-owned
on-disk hashes rather than marking unwritten candidates as owned, while still
recording pending hashes needed for crash recovery. Do not adopt externally
modified file hashes as owned; add a regression test covering two failed catalog
writes followed by offline detach and verifying the original catalog is
preserved.

Review comments at @native/ocx-child/tests/conformance.rs:
- Around line 476-502: Update the write-ahead recovery test around
apply_attach_or_sync to deterministically exercise two consecutive sync
failures: one after journal creation and another after catalog writing but
before config writing, using an existing test failure-injection mechanism or
establishing a deterministic test seam rather than filesystem permissions. Start
with a pre-attach catalog, then call offline_detach and assert the recovery
outcome and config/catalog contents match the expected pre-attach state; use an
RAII guard for scratch-directory cleanup so it runs on assertion panics.

native/ocx-child/tests/relay_and_lifecycle.rs:320-325
Minor · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Clean up the scratch directory and daemon on panic.

In native/ocx-child/tests/relay_and_lifecycle.rs, an assertion failure after restart can leave the detached daemon running and holding listen_port. It also skips scratch-directory removal.

Add a drop guard like ScratchGuard in conformance.rs. Have it stop the owned daemon before removing the scratch directory. Keep the explicit disconnect and its assertions for the normal test path.

Reviewed at c4d4d5d6 (base dev): full diff of the Rust crate (cli, daemon, journal, platform, relay serve/shutdown, state) and the TS changes (ephemeral-child.ts, ssh-argv.ts / remote-windows.ts candidate ordering, link-enrollment.ts ephemeral preflight). Focus was correctness of the trust and persistence boundaries, not a security scan.

Checked and looks right:

  • The link credential reaches the Child only through stdin (4 KiB cap, strict JSON shape). It is not passed in argv and is not written to the journal. link-key / state.json / journal use a 0700 dir and 0600 create_new temp files, then fsync and rename, with symlink rejection.
  • The journal is written before any $CODEX_HOME file changes. Re-running detach after a partial restore converges, because the pre-attach SHA is part of the match set.
  • The daemon is stopped only when its PID is attested by /healthz and matches state.daemon_pid. Shutdown uses a per-state secret compared in constant time and refuses to report success while the listener stays bound.
  • The POSIX candidate script quotes everything through "$@". Preferring ocx-child when child/state.json exists matches the Windows $k+$f ordering. HOME/USERPROFILE resolution matches resolve_user_home.
  • Ephemeral preflight: Home treats every curl exit code except 0 and 255 as a free port. That alone would miss a non-HTTP listener, but connect re-checks with a real bind in ensure_port_available_for_attach, so it is covered.
  • CI on this head: link-ocx-child-conformance (including the cargo conformance runner) and link-ocx-child-e2e actually ran and passed in the Linux shards.

Two inline issues, neither marked blocking here:

  1. Detach/sync take config.toml / models_cache.json paths from the current CODEX_HOME, not from the journal that recorded them.
  2. Sync's stale fallback also fires when Home rejects the link credential.

Non-blocking notes:

  • No CI job runs cargo fmt / clippy or the full cargo test (relay_and_lifecycle.rs) for this crate. The Windows-only cfg(windows) code (ACL hardening, LockFileEx, CREATE_BREAKAWAY_FROM_JOB) is never compiled in CI. native/remote-workspace-helper has a dedicated cargo job in ci.yml that could be mirrored.
  • On rollover the serve loop exits as soon as shutdown is signalled, so in-flight SSE responses on worker threads are cut mid-stream. This is probably acceptable for a sync-triggered restart, but it is worth documenting.
  • write_private_atomic / write_regular_atomic do not fsync the parent directory after rename. Durability of the rename itself across a power loss is not guaranteed on all filesystems.

I did not approve because remote execution and credential handling need the explicit security review described in MAINTAINERS.md.

offline_detach reads the journal from the current OPENCODEX_HOME but takes config.toml / models_cache.json from the current CODEX_HOME (paths.codex_config_path()). The journal already records codex_home (and catalog_path, which is taken from the journal two lines below), but nothing uses it.

Trigger: Home attaches over SSH, where CODEX_HOME is usually unset (so the target is ~/.codex). The user then runs ocx-child detach from an interactive shell that exports CODEX_HOME=/other. The SHA does not match there, so detach goes the surgical route on /other/config.toml, a file it never attached. It restores the catalog at the journal path, then deletes the journal. ~/.codex/config.toml stays routed at the dead relay, and the only recovery snapshot is gone.

apply_attach_or_sync (line 251) has the same issue for sync. With an existing journal the root-routing conflict check is skipped, so it writes an injected config into the other home and re-records codex_home / catalog_path, while keeping the first home's pre-attach snapshot.

Suggested fix: when a journal exists, either derive the config, cache and catalog paths from journal.codex_home, or fail closed (non-zero exit with a clear message) when the current CODEX_HOME differs from journal.codex_home. A conformance vector that detaches with a different CODEX_HOME would pin this.

The stale fallback fires on every non-200 response, including 401/403. After Home revokes or rotates the link key, ocx-child sync keeps applying the cached catalog. It exits 0 (with home.state: "stale" in --json) and can even roll the relay over, so a revoked link looks like a healthy offline sync. Consider falling back only on transport errors, timeouts and 5xx, and returning a distinct non-zero result on 401/403 so the operator knows to detach or re-enroll.
