Summary

  • Honor __omit__ for native Chat effort on providers with independent thinking and effort controls, while preserving the requested thinking switch, explicit overrides, and a provider's explicitly supported native ultra.
  • Cover max, folded and explicitly supported ultra, and none on gateway wires; correct the provider guide.

Closes #8266

Verification

  • Failing-first: the max and ultra omission cases failed before the initial fix. The explicitly supported ultra regression failed on 439b829e6 and passed after its correction. CodeRabbit's none: "__omit__" gateway cases failed in all six host/override combinations on faccbd5cc and passed after the correction.
  • On bdc8a257c, with Bun 1.4.4, env -i and temporary homes: bun test tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-reasoning-wire-policy.test.ts tests/providers/mistral-reasoning-efforts.test.ts tests/responses/chat-raw-reasoning-delivery.test.ts tests/codex-integration/reasoning-effort.test.ts tests/clients/client-export-reasoning-controls.test.ts tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts: 355 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 63 passed, 0 failed. bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check, and git diff --check passed on the current head.
  • The branch merges dev commit 19d14bc79; the prior isolated union check passed 245 tests and all requested gates, and the current-head focused checks above cover the merged result and review fix.
  • On the prior head faccbd5cc, clean isolated bun run test:changed passed 26,137 tests, with 42 skipped. An earlier inherited-environment run failed one catalog test; the same failure was reproduced on unchanged baseline 883bf0fd, and the catalog file passed 22/22 on the PR head without the inherited DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS.
  • cd docs-site && bun run build passed on bdc8a257c under a clean environment (641 pages, 93,188 internal links).
  • Current-head isolated bun run test:changed: 26,143 passed, 42 skipped, 0 failed across 1,068 files. Fresh independent review at bdc8a257c: PASS, no actionable findings; the reviewer verified 178 focused tests and 12 prior-red/current-green serialization cases. Hosted CI remains pending.
  • NOT RUN: full bun run test; its substantial overlap with test:changed would compete with active worktrees on this shared host. Focused regression and changed-graph coverage ran locally; broader coverage remains with CI.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. This change does not alter a security boundary.

Walkthrough

The native Chat reasoning-wire policy now applies __omit__ effort mappings on dual-control wires. It removes reasoning_effort when the mapping omits the requested strength and derives the thinking toggle from that strength unless an explicit toggle is set. Explicitly supported native ultra remains in the request.

Changes: Native Chat reasoning wire

Layer / File(s) Summary
Effort omission and toggle behavior
src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-wire.ts, tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-reasoning-wire-policy.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, structure/providers/chat-compat.md
The wire policy removes reasoning_effort when the requested strength maps to __omit__, except when the native body already contains explicitly supported ultra. When thinkingEnabled is not set, the requested strength determines the thinking toggle: none disables it, and other declared strengths enable it. Tests cover omitted max, ultra, and none mappings, explicit toggle values, and supported ultra. The provider guide describes the mapping. No wording change is visible in the marked line of structure/providers/chat-compat.md.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

  • #8254 — The policy handles omitted effort mappings for folded ultra, but this change does not add the model catalog ladders requested by the issue.

Possibly related PRs

  • lidge-jun/opencodex#8259 — Both changes affect native Chat effort serialization and ultra handling.
  • lidge-jun/opencodex#7531 — Both changes modify the dual-control reasoning policy; this change covers omitted effort mappings and explicit toggle values.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to bdc8a

The previously reported gateway omission issue is fixed, and no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Explanation

[#8266] src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-wire.ts:103 removes an omitted effort on independent thinking and effort wires. It retains the requested thinking state and explicit override. tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-reasoning-wire-policy.test.ts:302 covers the native max reproduction, folded ultra, gateway format, and overrides. The tests at lines 319 and 331 also cover explicitly supported ultra and omitted none.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

[#8266] The wire policy and regression tests address omission and related thinking behavior. The provider guide documents the related ultra and omission behavior. The supplied summary reports no semantic change in structure/providers/chat-compat.md. No unrelated change is evident.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.
