Motivation

Fixes #12578.

When an HTML navbar item is added to the navigation bar, it should render as a list item (<li>) when displayed inside the mobile hamburger menu, because the mobile sidebar renders items within an unordered list (<ul className="menu__list">).

Previously, HtmlNavbarItem only rendered an <li> when isDropdownItem was true, and defaulted to a <div> otherwise. This caused invalid HTML markup (a direct <div> child under <ul>) and broke layout/styling inside the mobile menu.

Proposed Changes

  • Update HtmlNavbarItem to choose 'li' when either isDropdownItem or mobile is true.
  • Add unit tests in packages/docusaurus-theme-classic/src/theme/NavbarItem/__tests__/HtmlNavbarItem.test.tsx covering desktop top-level items, desktop dropdown items, mobile items, and mobile dropdown items.

Test Plan

Added unit tests verifying:

  • Desktop top-level items render as <div> with navbar__item class.
  • Desktop dropdown items render as <li>.
  • Mobile items render as <li> with menu__list-item class.
  • Mobile dropdown items render as <li> with menu__list-item class.
  • Custom className continues to be preserved.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Mobile navigation items now render as list elements, improving consistency with the navigation structure across screen sizes. Desktop top-level items continue to use their existing layout, and dropdown items remain list elements. This update is limited to how navigation items are represented; it does not change their visible content or available behavior.

When rendering a navbar HTML item in the mobile menu, the item is placed inside the 'menu__list' unordered list. Previously, it was always rendered as a 'div' unless it was a dropdown item, which caused invalid HTML structure and broken layout inside the mobile menu list.
