fix: escape carriage returns in serialized signing output - #588
Conversation
A carriage return in signed text reaches the DOM through a character reference, and canonicalization digests it as
. xmldom's serializer writes it raw in text nodes, and an XML parser turns a raw carriage return into a line feed, so getSignedXml(), getSignatureXml() and getOriginalXmlWithIds() returned documents that no longer held the signed data and failed verification. Write each remaining raw carriage return as
. The signer parses its input, so outside attribute values, which xmldom already escapes, they can only be in text. Fixes node-saml#587 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

1390-1390: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winNormalize XML whitespace in
SignatureValuebefore signature-node lookup.
loadSignature()removes only CR/LF characters, whilefindLoadedSignature()compares rawtextContent. A valid signature loaded from a separate XML document can use different base64 wrapping, sofindLoadedSignature()can return no match. The enveloped-signature transform then keeps the embedded signature because the selected node is not a descendant of the transformed node. The reference digest can fail.
SignatureValueuses the XML Schemabase64Binarytype. Its allowed XML whitespace includes spaces and tabs. Use one normalizer in both paths.Proposed fix

Tests should not call deprecated APIs. getOriginalXmlWithIds() goes through the same serialize() helper as getSignedXml() and getSignatureXml(), whose tests keep the fix covered. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Summary
A carriage return in signed text reaches the DOM through a character reference (
or
), and canonicalization digests it as
. xmldom's serializer writes it raw in text nodes, and an XML parser turns a raw carriage return into a line feed (XML 1.0 §2.11). The XML thatcomputeSignature()produced therefore no longer held the signed data, and it failed verification.computeSignature()now writes every raw carriage return in its serialized output as
. The signer parses its input, so a carriage return can only sit in text or in an attribute value, and xmldom already escapes attribute values. This applies to:getSignedXml(), on both the synchronous and callback pathsgetSignatureXml(), which had the same bug for text inds:Objectcontent: an enveloping signature over such an Object failed verificationgetOriginalXmlWithIds()(deprecated)Compatibility
Output changes only for documents with a carriage return in text, and signatures over those did not verify before. Digests and verification are unchanged, so there is no README Upgrading note.
This PR, #585 and #589 merge cleanly in any order, and the combined suite passes.
