Follow-up to #632, from a review of #642. Nothing changes at runtime.

  • test/README.md: it said the listed fixtures were signed by other implementations, then that some inclusive_namespaces_* fixtures were signed by xml-crypto 6.3.2. It now names the signer of each fixture. Five come from .NET's SignedXml. One has .NET's document and reference digest, with a SignedInfo canonicalized by libxml2 and signed with openssl. One comes from xml-crypto 6.3.2, and it checks that old signatures still verify, not interoperability. The sentence saying the fixtures can't be regenerated is gone.
  • inclusive_namespaces_in_with_comments_namespace.xml: it sat in a list of .NET fixtures with nothing to say that its InclusiveNamespaces is outside the exc-c14n namespace on purpose. The test now says so and links Require InclusiveNamespaces to be in the exc-c14n namespace when verifying #633, which decides when verification stops accepting it.
  • loadedPrefixLists: the private field had a /** */ block, which AGENTS.md reserves for exported API. Removed.

The same review found that enveloped-signature after a canonicalization breaks XMLDSig §6.6.4. That is handled separately: #649 deprecates the order in 6.4 and #647 rejects it in 7.0.

Provenance checks

I re-signed the inputs and compared the output with each fixture:

  • The five .NET fixtures are byte-identical to the output of System.Security.Cryptography.Xml 6.0.1.
  • inclusive_namespaces_in_with_comments_namespace.xml is byte-identical to the output of the published xml-crypto@6.3.2.
  • For inclusive_namespaces_prefix_list_with_tab.xml, libxml2's exclusive C14N of SignedInfo, signed with openssl, gives the fixture's SignatureValue.

npm run lint passes. I didn't run the build or the tests, because the change is a README, a comment and a removed comment.

Refs #633.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

test/README.md said the listed fixtures were signed by other implementations,
then that some inclusive_namespaces_* fixtures were signed by xml-crypto 6.3.2.
It now names the signer of each one, and says that the 6.3.2 fixture checks
that old signatures still verify rather than interoperability.

That fixture carries InclusiveNamespaces outside the exc-c14n namespace on
purpose, so the test that loads it says so and links node-saml#633.

Remove the JSDoc block from the private loadedPrefixLists field; AGENTS.md
reserves that form for exported API.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The canonicalization pipeline now warns when enveloped-signature follows transform output parsed into XML. The transform still runs. The README documents the ordering and deprecation. Test documentation identifies fixture signers and compatibility context.

Changes

Enveloped-signature transform ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track parsed output and warn
src/signed-xml.ts
The canonicalization pipeline tracks when transform output is parsed into XML. If enveloped-signature follows that conversion, it emits a deprecation warning and continues processing the transform. The comment describing loadedPrefixLists was removed.
Document ordering and fixture context
README.md, test/README.md, test/signature-integration-tests.spec.ts
The README explains the required transform ordering and its deprecation. The test documentation and comment identify fixture signers, purposes, and compatibility context.

Assert the post-canonicalization warning.

Add an isolated test that expects XML_CRYPTO_ENVELOPED_SIGNATURE_AFTER_CANONICALIZATION when exclusiveC14n precedes envelopedSignature, and no warning in the reverse order. The current integration test checks only signature validity and signed references, so removing or misgating the warning call leaves it green. Isolate the check because Node’s util.deprecate warns only once per wrapped function.
