Sergio Milanese

System Engineer · Infrastructure & Solution Architect

I design, build and operate enterprise IT infrastructure across Linux, networking, virtualization, cloud, security and communications, with a strong focus on reliability, observability and operational continuity.

Based in Turin, Italy, I have more than 20 years of practical experience in ICT, from physical connectivity and carrier access to enterprise networks, systems, cloud platforms and production services.

Infrastructure engineering

My work connects architecture and operations.

I don't only design systems: I bring them into production, operate them, troubleshoot failures and improve their reliability and manageability over time.

My technical experience includes:

  • Linux & Systems — Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, core infrastructure services and advanced troubleshooting
  • Virtualization — KVM, VMware, storage integration and resilient architectures
  • Networking — LAN, WAN, routing, switching, VPN, Wi-Fi, IPv4/IPv6 and network diagnostics
  • Security — firewalls, segmentation, access control, hardening and secure infrastructure design
  • Cloud & Platforms — hybrid cloud, AWS, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, DNS, mail and databases
  • Communications — SIP, VoIP, WebRTC and real-time communication infrastructure
  • Automation & Operations — configuration management, monitoring, observability, controlled changes and rollback
  • Business IT — identity, collaboration, endpoints, lifecycle management and technical supplier coordination

I approach infrastructure as a single system of dependencies rather than as isolated products.

That means designing not only for normal operation, but also for failure, diagnosis, recovery and change.

Open source work

This GitHub profile preserves two historical OpenNebula integrations developed around ZFS storage, KVM virtualization and Linux infrastructure.

Datastore and transfer manager driver for ZFS storage in OpenNebula/KVM environments.

OpenNebula integration for ZFS volumes exposed through iSCSI to KVM/libvirt nodes.

These repositories are maintained as technical references documenting practical integration between virtualization, storage and Linux systems.

OpenMilanese

OpenMilanese is my personal technical and professional website.

It presents my professional background, infrastructure engineering approach, technical experience and selected work across networking, systems, cloud, security, communications and open-source technologies.

The site also includes an interactive Infrastructure Lab, built around realistic infrastructure scenarios involving reliability, networking, DNS, deployment, capacity and troubleshooting.

Engineering approach

Design. Build. Operate.

I believe production infrastructure should be:

  • understandable;
  • observable;
  • documented;
  • recoverable;
  • secure;
  • maintainable;
  • and designed with failure modes in mind.

A system is not truly reliable because it works today. It is reliable when its dependencies are understood, failures can be diagnosed and recovery can actually be performed under operational pressure.
