Status, 2026-10-28: oven-sh/bun#37432 no longer needs this PR: it fixes the stale line in Bun alone. This PR stays open as the alternative, for a maintainer to pick or close.

Problem

  • Bun formats .stack itself and prints at <parse> (file:line) from ErrorInstance::line() and sourceURL(). It cannot tell when those hold the parser's position.
  • sourceURL() has other writers: a structured clone, and computeErrorInfo() when a collection formats the frames. After Error.captureStackTrace() in another file, Bun names a file the parser never rejected.

Fix

  • New flag ErrorInstance::hasParseLocation(), under USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS). It is true while line() and sourceURL() are the parser's position in a source with a URL.
  • The 4-argument addErrorInfo() sets it before it asks the host for the stack.
  • What replaces the two fields clears it: computeErrorInfo(), setErrorInfoForEmbedderError(), and materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() after the host's hook.
  • Verified: the tests of Clear the stale line and source URL of an error before frames are installed on it bun#37432 at its earlier head 100feae89f, with the preview autobuild-preview-pr-407-b78a3001 (capture-stack-trace.test.js, 77 pass).

Background

Downsides

Notes

Revisions. The branch is rebased onto fcc1ea0, the commit that Bun's main pins. Compared with the first revision of this PR:

  • computeErrorInfo() clears the flag. Without that, an import() parser error that gets frames from Error.captureStackTrace(), has them formatted by a collection, and gets frames again still prints at <parse> with the first frame's file.
  • addErrorInfo() sets the flag only when the source has a URL, and materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() clears it after the hook returns (review). So the flag alone tells the host that there is a position to print.
  • The static_assert is new.

Where the flag is true. The parser makes the error with createSyntaxError() and calls the 4-argument addErrorInfo() once. With a host hook and a frame on the stack, addErrorInfo() materializes the error at once, so the flag is true only while the hook runs. An error made with no frame on the stack (a module that fails to parse during import()) keeps the flag until something replaces the fields.

Writers of the line and the sourceURL. addErrorInfo() (sets the flag), finishCreation() for a clone (a new object, flag false), setErrorInfoForEmbedderError() (clears), computeErrorInfo() (clears), and the hook call in materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() (clears). The other path of materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() moves the sourceURL out only when m_hasErrorInfo is set, and each place that sets m_hasErrorInfo has a false flag. setStackFrames() and captureStackTrace() replace the frames and leave the position, so they leave the flag.

Measurements. lib/libJavaScriptCore.a of the lane bun-webkit-linux-amd64-aot, release autobuild-fcc1ea0973a4 against this PR's preview, with llvm-nm -S and llvm-objdump -d:

fcc1ea0 b78a300
.text of UnifiedSource-runtime-10.cpp.o 83708 bytes 83748 bytes
addErrorInfo(VM&, JSObject*, int, const SourceCode&) 749 bytes, 209 instructions 757 bytes, 210 instructions
ErrorInstance::computeErrorInfo 434 bytes, 130 instructions 450 bytes, 132 instructions (one is padding)
ErrorInstance::materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded(VM&) 1932 bytes, 485 instructions 1948 bytes, 489 instructions
ErrorInstance::setErrorInfoForEmbedderError 266 bytes, 88 instructions 266 bytes, 88 instructions
ErrorInstance::ErrorInstance 64 bytes, 19 instructions 64 bytes, 19 instructions

In materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() the new instructions on the hook path are movzwl 0x4b(%rbx), %eax, andl $0xfdff, %eax, movw %ax, 0x4b(%rbx). No new branch and no allocation anywhere. static_assert(sizeof(JSC::ErrorInstance) == 80) holds against the headers of the fcc1ea0 prebuilt and against this PR's.

Tests. The flag has no reader in the jsc shell, so this PR has no JSTests file. The one-line reader is oven-sh/bun@100feae89f, an earlier head of oven-sh/bun#37432. Its tests (test/js/node/v8/capture-stack-trace.test.js) passed on a debug build made with bun scripts/build.ts --profile=debug --webkit-version=autobuild-preview-pr-407-b78a3001. The same tests, with four more rows, now pass on oven-sh/bun#37432 without this PR.

Walkthrough

Under USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS), ErrorInstance now tracks parse-location state. The flag is set only when addErrorInfo receives a nonempty source URL. The code initializes or clears the flag at defined points.

Changes

Parse-location tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add and reset parse-location state
Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/ErrorInstance.h, Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/ErrorInstance.cpp, Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/Error.cpp
ErrorInstance adds a parse-location flag and getter/setter. The flag is initialized or reset to false during construction, embedder error-info setup, error-info computation, and JavaScript-value materialization. addErrorInfo sets the flag only when the source URL is nonempty. A 64-bit Bun build also checks that ErrorInstance is at most 80 bytes.

Explanation

The description gives a clear problem statement, fix, background, measurements, tests, and downsides for a WebKit change that adds ErrorInstance::hasParseLocation(). It does not follow the WebKit template. It has no bug tracker link (Bugzilla or bugs.webkit.org) and no 'Reviewed by' line. It also has no title in the template form and no changed-file list with function entries. The technical content is thorough, but the required repository-specific metadata is missing.

Resolution

Add a WebKit Bugzilla link in the form https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=##### and a bug title. Add the commit-message structure from the template: a 'Reviewed by' line (use NOBODY (OOPS!) only as a placeholder until review), an explanation section that follows the template, and a changed-file list with the function entries (for example Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/Error.cpp: addErrorInfo, and the ErrorInstance methods in ErrorInstance.h and ErrorInstance.cpp). Also state that the PR is mentioned on Bugzilla, and apply the component and version labels and the author assignment that the template requires.

LGTM — small, well-scoped ordering fix guarded by USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS).

What was reviewed:

  • createSyntaxError always returns an ErrorInstance (via ErrorInstance::create), so the downcast<ErrorInstance>(*syntaxError) is safe — same pattern as the existing unconditional call after the switch.
  • Confirmed addErrorInfo(VM&, JSObject*, int, const SourceCode&) calls materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() after setting line/sourceURL (Error.cpp:254-267), so the ordering claim holds.
  • Non-Bun builds: the only change is hoisting createSyntaxError(...) into a local before passing it to addErrorInfo — semantically identical.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR touches a single header, Source/JavaScriptCore/parser/ParserError.h, and changes only the SyntaxError case of ParserError::toErrorObject(). It hoists the createSyntaxError(...) call into a local variable and, under #if USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS), calls setParseError() on it before handing it to addErrorInfo(). The existing unconditional setParseError() after the switch is left in place, so for the SyntaxError case the second call is a harmless idempotent write of m_parseError = true.

Security risks

None. This only reorders when a boolean flag on an ErrorInstance is set relative to stack-string materialization. No new inputs, no allocation changes, no control-flow changes visible outside the Bun host formatter hook.

Level of scrutiny

Low. The diff is ~10 lines, guarded by the Bun-specific feature macro, and mirrors an existing pattern in the same function (downcast<ErrorInstance>(*error).setParseError()). I verified in Error.cpp that createSyntaxError(JSGlobalObject*, const String&) returns ErrorInstance::create(...) (never null), so dereferencing for the downcast is as safe as the pre-existing dereference at the bottom of the function. I also confirmed that addErrorInfo(VM&, JSObject*, int, const SourceCode&) does call materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() (Error.cpp:267) after setting line/sourceURL, which validates the PR's motivation.

Other factors

For non-USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS) builds the only observable change is that the createSyntaxError result is stored in a named local before being passed to addErrorInfo — no behavioral difference. The header already includes <JavaScriptCore/ErrorInstance.h>, so downcast<ErrorInstance> compiles without new includes. The bug hunting system found no issues.

LGTM — small, self-contained Bun-only flag addition that follows the existing m_parseError/m_nativeGetterTypeError pattern.

What was reviewed:

  • Confirmed the 4-arg addErrorInfo(VM&, JSObject*, int, const SourceCode&) overload is called only from ParserError::toErrorObject()'s SyntaxError branch, so the bit is set exactly where claimed.
  • Checked ordering: setHasParseLocation() runs before materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded(), so the host formatter sees it when building .stack.
  • Bitfield count: 6 base bits + wasm bit + this bit = 8, still one byte; constructor initializer order matches declaration order; all additions are behind USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS).
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR adds a single Bun-only boolean bitfield m_hasParseLocation to ErrorInstance, with a getter/setter pair, and sets it inside the existing USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS) block of the 4-argument addErrorInfo() overload in Error.cpp — right after the line/sourceURL are recorded and immediately before materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded(). The constructor in ErrorInstance.cpp initializes it to false. Three files touched, ~15 lines added, zero lines removed.

The purpose is to give Bun's stack-trace formatter a precise signal that an error's line()/sourceURL() came from the parser (via ParserError::toErrorObject()), as opposed to structured clone or GC-driven computeErrorInfo(). I verified via grep that ParserError.h:101 is the sole caller of this addErrorInfo overload, and only in its SyntaxError case — the EvalError, StackOverflow, and OutOfMemory branches don't call it, so the bit's semantics match the PR description exactly.

Security risks

None. This is an internal, read-only metadata flag on a C++ object. It is not exposed to JavaScript, does not affect parsing, JIT, GC, or memory layout in any exploitable way, and is entirely guarded by USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS).

Level of scrutiny

Low. The change is mechanical and mirrors half a dozen existing 1-bit flags on the same class (m_parseError, m_stackOverflowError, m_nativeGetterTypeError, etc.). It adds no control flow to JSC itself — the only in-tree write is the one setHasParseLocation() call, and there are no in-tree readers (the reader lives in oven-sh/bun#37432). Non-Bun builds compile identically.

Other factors

  • Bitfield packing: 6 unconditional bits + m_catchableFromWasm + m_hasParseLocation = 8 bits max, fitting the same byte as before, so sizeof(ErrorInstance) is unchanged as the description states.
  • Constructor initializer list order matches member declaration order (both appended after the ENABLE(WEBASSEMBLY) block), so no -Wreorder.
  • The set happens before materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded(), which under Bun calls the host onComputeErrorInfoJSValue hook — so the formatter can read the flag at the right moment, addressing the ordering problem the description calls out for isParseError().
  • Preview build succeeded; the paired Bun PR carries the actual tests for the clone/worker/GC-flush/eval cases.

robobun added a commit to oven-sh/bun that referenced this pull request Aug 11, 2026
isParseError() is also set for syntax errors in eval code, which go
through toErrorObject() without addErrorInfo() and so keep live frames;
once GC flushed those frames and recorded the first frame's URL on the
error, Error.captureStackTrace() still produced the fabricated frame for
them. The reworked oven-sh/WebKit#407 instead has addErrorInfo() set a
dedicated bit right where it records the parser's line and sourceURL,
which is exactly what the frame renders, so the error type check is no
longer needed either.

Adds the eval() and indirect eval rows to the GC test; a caught error's
frames stay alive while it is the VM's last exception, so the test
throws something else before collecting.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that setStackFrames() (ErrorInstance.cpp:140) leaving m_hasParseLocation set is consistent with the stated intent (a genuine parser error keeps its <parse> frame after Error.captureStackTrace), that the clone path finishCreation(VM&, String&&, LineColumn, String&&, String&&, String&&) never sets the bit, and that the sizeof(ErrorInstance) <= 80 assertion holds on 64-bit with ENABLE(WEBASSEMBLY) on or off (the two Bun bits land in the byte after the upstream bitfield, offset 76, so the object still pads to 80).

Extended reasoning...

The change adds one Bun-only bit to ErrorInstance, sets it in the 4-arg addErrorInfo() before the host formatter runs, and clears it in setErrorInfoForEmbedderError() and computeErrorInfo(); it touches no security-sensitive surface. One verified finding is posted inline (the bit is set even when the parser supplied no sourceURL, and materialization moves m_sourceURL out), so this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.

Comment thread Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/Error.cpp Resolved
…e parser's

Bun formats the stack of an error itself. For an error the parser made it
adds a line for the position the parser recorded, and it has to know that
line() and sourceURL() hold that position. A non-empty sourceURL() does not
say so: a structured clone copies one, and computeErrorInfo() writes the
first frame's there when a collection formats the frames. isParseError()
does not say so either: ParserError::toErrorObject() sets it after
addErrorInfo() has asked the host for the stack, and sets it for an eval
parse error, which records no position.

ErrorInstance::hasParseLocation() is a new flag for this, under
USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS). It is true only while line() and sourceURL() are
the parser's position in a source that has a URL:

- The 4-argument addErrorInfo() sets it where it records the sourceURL,
before it asks the host for the stack.
- What replaces the two fields clears it: computeErrorInfo(),
  setErrorInfoForEmbedderError(), and materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded() after
the host's hook has written the position to report, which then moves
  into the properties.

The flag takes a bit of a byte that was padding. A static_assert keeps
sizeof(ErrorInstance) at 80 bytes on 64-bit targets.

I reviewed the pushed revision (b78a300) and found no bugs; the point from my earlier inline comment is addressed here, since the set now sits inside the !sourceURL.isEmpty() block and the host-hook materialization path clears the flag before m_sourceURL is moved out. Because the files fall under /Source/JavaScriptCore in CODEOWNERS and the flag's only reader and tests live in the Bun repo, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Flag lifecycle against every writer of m_lineColumn/m_sourceURL: addErrorInfo sets, computeErrorInfo, setErrorInfoForEmbedderError and both materializeErrorInfoIfNeeded paths clear or never move the fields; setStackFrames leaves the two fields alone (so the flag correctly survives Error.captureStackTrace()), and the clone finishCreation runs on a fresh object.
  • The hostComputes branch and the m_stackPropertyProvidedByCapturedStackTrace case: the flag is cleared before the properties are put, so it is never true with m_sourceURL emptied.
  • The sizeof(ErrorInstance) <= 80 assert: 72 bytes through m_stackString, uint16_t RuntimeType, uint8_t ErrorType, 10 bool bits in 2 bytes = 77, padded to 80 under both Itanium and MSVC bitfield rules; m_returnAddresses is declared unconditionally, so ENABLE_AOT does not change it.
Extended reasoning...

The change adds a 1-bit flag to JSC's ErrorInstance plus one set site in addErrorInfo and three clear sites, all under USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS), 22 lines across Error.cpp, ErrorInstance.cpp and ErrorInstance.h; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The prior run's inline finding (flag set with an empty sourceURL and left true after materialization) is fixed in this revision, and tracing every writer of the line/sourceURL fields found no path where the flag is true while the fields are not the parser's. Approval is withheld because /Source/JavaScriptCore is covered by .github/CODEOWNERS, the flag has no reader or regression test in this repository, and the change's correctness depends on the Bun-side formatter that consumes it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the parser-location flag when replacing the captured trace.

After addErrorInfo() sets m_hasParseLocation, a non-appending captureStackTrace() replaces m_stackTrace but leaves the flag set. Bun's formatter can then emit the parser's <parse> frame for the newly captured stack instead of using its first frame. The consequence is an incorrect parser frame, not necessarily a stack containing only frames.

On the CodeRabbit note about captureStackTrace() (ErrorInstance.cpp:241): not applied.

A new stack replaces the frames. It does not replace the position where the parser rejected the source, so the flag stays true and Bun still prints at <parse> (file:line) above the new frames. setStackFrames() behaves the same way. The test "a SyntaxError from import() keeps its at <parse> line, with and without captured frames" in oven-sh/bun#37386 pins this.

The flag is cleared where the line and the sourceURL are replaced. The case the note asks a test for (frames formatted by a collection, then Error.captureStackTrace()) is the row "a parser error of import() that got its frames in another file" in oven-sh/bun#37432.

of that URL. A structured clone copies the one of its original, and a
collection that formats the frames of an unread stack leaves the first
frame's on the error. Error.captureStackTrace in another file then printed
a file that the parser never rejected.

The condition now tests ErrorInstance::hasParseLocation() (oven-sh/WebKit#407).

Update: oven-sh/bun#37432 no longer needs this PR.

A review of the pair found that Bun can tell a stale source URL by itself. Every writer of one (the clone constructor, computeErrorInfo(), setErrorInfoForEmbedderError()) leaves the error with no trace, and an error that the parser made keeps its trace, even an empty one. So Bun now clears the line and the source URL of an error that has no trace, in the three places where it installs frames. That takes no engine state and no WebKit release.

This PR stays open as the alternative. The description says what the flag still does better (a parser error made while Error.stackTraceLimit is not a number) and what it costs. If a maintainer does not want the flag, this PR can be closed.
