Handle ignored remote folders specially: "Do not sync" hint from server #4621

Closed as not planned

Description

@moscicki

It would make sense to be able to set a flag on the server and exclude certain folders from sync entirely.
When I know that I do not want to sync a certain part of my tree on any of my devices then the sync client should just ignore these folders. We know that in some cases our users use the storage for non-syncable cases (e.g. git checkouts, compilation, ...) accessing the filesystem directly.

This may be very easily done by adding a webdav property to the PROPFIND response indicating that a server's hint is not to sync given folder. A simplest client behaviour could be to ignore this part of the tree altogether -- as if it was matching the Ignored Files pattern defined locally.

There could be more elaborate mechanisms in the future, such that a user could locally override this setting and still sync the folder if needed to.

What do you think?

    @PVince81

    I made a main ticket about a new webdav property that we could add: owncloud/core#26311

    The ticket also links the many other tickets that suggest excluding stuff from sync with many different criteria.

    As discussed in the linked ticket, need to decide whether the permission is soft or hard: owncloud/core#26311 (comment)

    • Soft mode as in: simply uncheck the folder in selective sync mode, the user can always decide to still sync if needed
    • Hard mode as in: never sync and don't let the user override.

    Regarding selective sync mode, this wouldn't work for files, only folders, since the UI only allows selecting files.

    @moscicki The recent client versions 2.3.* have a theme.h option to not sync external storages (=folders) by default. This can be done with the "M" permission.

    if (_syncOptions._confirmExternalStorage && std::strchr(remotePerm, 'M')) {

    But you want something more generic?

    Wow, huge discussion on owncloud/core#26311
    So we'd need to support a more generic webdav property or permission and should also check our behaviour for 503 (we might retry too often so better have another code?
