[Bug]: Unable to paste copied text into chat

Steps to reproduce

1. Copy text from any other application (I used Zed to ensure no weird unicode characters)
2. in t3code latest nightly select a threat and attempt to paste into the chat using command+v or Edit>Paste
3. expected text will not show.

This issue appears even with completely new thread and after restart of application.

Expected behavior

Copying text and pasting into chat should result in the copied text pasting into the chat field.

Actual behavior

The chat show no text when you past the copied text

Something I did just randomly discover, if you goto About to get the version in t3code, copy that and then paste that into the chat field it that will work. but copying from other threads or external apps does not.

Triage

Thanks for the clear repro. This looks like a real desktop / macOS chat-composer paste bug on nightly 7445aa733. Not a duplicate of an existing issue.

⌘V and Edit → Paste both go through Electron’s native Paste role (apps/desktop/src/window/DesktopApplicationMenu.ts). On macOS, sibling Browser/preview <webview> guests can all report focused, and getFocusedWebContents() can pick the wrong one — so the paste lands in a guest (or nowhere) and the composer stays empty. That is the same class of bug as open PR #12674 (⌘V does nothing in Browser tabs), which was reproduced against this same nightly commit. #12674 is not a chat fix; if you have the Browser/preview panel open, please retest chat paste after it lands.

If the composer is focused, the renderer paste stack can still drop the text:

• Tiptap handlePaste in apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx (preventDefault, then insert via buildTiptapContent)
• onComposerPaste in apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx (file/image flavors claimed as attachments; text half discarded — see PR fix(web): keep pasted link text when the clipboard also carries an image #5442)
• Window capture paste-to-focus in apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx (skipped when a terminal owns focus, or when the event path is an interactive control)

Please confirm

1. Does typing into the composer work in the same session?
2. Does right-click → Paste in the composer work (⌘V / Edit → Paste still fail)?
3. Is the Browser / preview panel or terminal open when this happens?
4. Does paste work if you click the composer first, vs. only after selecting a thread?
5. Does ⌘⇧V (Paste as Text) work? Does paste work in Settings search?

Accepting as a macOS desktop UI bug. First investigation target is Electron Paste-role focus when preview guests exist; then the composer handlers if it still fails with no preview open.

2. right click and parking does not work
3. neither of these were open when issue occurred
4. no, I was sure to confirm cursor is in the composer
5. no, I tried this from the file edit menu

I’m investigating a fix. Could you confirm whether the literal text hello, copied from Zed, also fails? Does that same clipboard content paste into Settings search?

If the failure depends on particular text, please share a short non-sensitive example and any console error shown when pasting.

Pasting 'hello' does work without issue.

in the testing im doing I was pasting in markdown thats around 5000 characters..

Thanks—that narrows it down. I tested a 5,000-character Markdown sample: it pastes normally when bold, italic, and inline code appear separately. Adding just one bold inline-code fragment (for example, **`sample.ts`**) makes the entire paste disappear, with RangeError: Invalid collection of marks for node text: bold,code in the console.

That particular failure is covered by existing PR #12290. Applying its patch locally makes the same 5,000-character sample paste successfully. This is a possible explanation for your document, rather than confirmation that your report is a duplicate.

Could you temporarily turn off Settings → General → Rich text composer and retry the original Markdown? If it still fails, a short non-sensitive excerpt that reproduces it, or the console error from the paste, would help isolate the remaining cause.
