[Bug]: Android composer cursor moves to a different position after scrolling a long prompt #18732
Scroll the composer by hand to bring that line back.
Keep typing.
Expected behavior
Scrolling the composer leaves the cursor where it was. New text goes in at the same spot.
Actual behavior
After the scroll, the cursor is somewhere else in the prompt. New text lands in the middle of an earlier sentence. You scroll to see what you are typing and find you have been typing in the wrong place.
The composer also still does not follow the caret for me, so I hit this on every long prompt. I have seen both problems since the Android app launched.
Impact
Major degradation or frequent failure. Long prompts are not practical to write on the phone.
Version or commit
Latest Play Store build as of 2026-10-12. I did not note the version number, and I do not know whether that build includes #17492.
Environment
Galaxy S25 Ultra, Android.
Keyboard app not confirmed.
Logs or stack traces
None.
Workaround
Write long prompts on web or desktop.
Notes
Related to #12690, which covers the composer not following the caret and was closed as fixed by #17492. This report is about the cursor position changing after a manual scroll, which that issue does not mention.
We need a version and a retest on a build that includes #17492 before we can act on this.
You say the composer still doesn't follow the caret. #17492 fixed exactly that (merged Oct 9), so that symptom alone suggests your Play Store build predates it. #17492 only lets the native editor service its layout requests. It doesn't touch selection or scroll handling, so it can't cause the cursor jump.
Please reply with:
The app version from Settings → About (or the Play Store listing).
Whether the jump still happens on the latest Android nightly, and which keyboard you use (Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, etc.).
Whether you scroll with a drag, or end the scroll with a tap. On Android, a tap after scrolling moves the cursor to where you tapped. That is standard EditText behavior.
If you can still reproduce it on a current build, a short screen recording would settle it.
Version is 2.0.0. The app does not show a build number. I updated on 2026-10-12, so it should be at or near the 2.0.0 (90) build on the android-nightly release.
Both problems are still there on that build. The composer does not follow the caret, and the cursor ends up somewhere else after I scroll. It has been like this since the app first shipped on Android.
Keyboard, drag versus tap, and a recording will follow in a separate comment.
Keyboard is Samsung Keyboard, though I don't think it matters here.
The cursor moves when I drag the text inside the composer with my finger. I am scrolling, not tapping to place the cursor. After the drag the cursor is in a different spot than before, and typing continues from there.
