Chat: inline LaTeX math (\( ... \)) renders as raw source instead of formatted math

Summary

Inline LaTeX math in assistant chat messages does not render. Formulas written with \(...\) delimiters show up as raw TeX source (looking like (formula)) instead of formatted math.

Repro

1. Ask the assistant for math (e.g. a list of equations).
2. Assistant replies with Markdown containing inline math, e.g.:

- \(\cos(E_q(q), E_d(d))\)
- \(\log(1 + e^{s_{ik} - s_{ij}})\)
- \(A_t = \lambda_t A_t^{\text{local}} + (1-\lambda_t)A^{\text{global}}\)

3. In the chat UI, the formulas appear unrendered as plain text / parenthesized TeX, not as math.

Observed in dark-mode chat at ~12:09 AM; copy button and timestamp render fine — only math fails.

Expected

Inline and block math should render via KaTeX/MathJax (or equivalent), e.g. (\log(1 + e^{s_{ik} - s_{ij}})) as formatted math.

Actual

Raw LaTeX is shown in the message bubble. Example of what appears:

• (\cos(E_q(q), E_d(d)))
• (\log(1 + e^{s_{ik} - s_{ij}}))

Update: I opened #7166 with a fix for this issue.

The PR adds KaTeX rendering for assistant and user chat messages, including inline \(...\) and display \[...\] delimiters. The implementation also:

• leaves ordinary dollar amounts untouched by disabling single-dollar math
• avoids rewriting delimiters inside code, URLs, and HTML attributes
• preserves source offsets used by interactive task lists
• keeps rendered math when copying as Markdown or rich HTML
• contains long inline/display expressions in narrow chat surfaces
• uses theme-aware, title-free fallback rendering for invalid expressions

All review findings raised so far have been addressed. The full web unit suite currently passes (2,570 tests), along with typecheck, lint, formatting, and focused math/clipboard regression tests. The PR is ready for upstream review and merge.

Thanks for the detailed report. This looks like the same issue tracked in issue #8430.

Both reports use the shared web and desktop chat renderer and ask it to render inline \(...\) math instead of raw LaTeX. Issue #8430 already covers display math, safe malformed-formula fallback, copy preservation, code and link exclusions, and narrow layouts. It also links back to this concrete inline report.

I'm closing this as a duplicate as part of an automated pass on all open issues. The canonical issue already preserves this report's scope and link. This does not mean the underlying bug is fixed.
