What Changed

On GNOME without the GlobalShortcuts portal, register the selected SnapShots chord in the bundled extension and deliver activations to T3 over D-Bus. Keep the portal path when the interface exists; permission denials and other portal failures do not select the fallback.

The extension releases the binding when the app disconnects or the extension is disabled, rejects shortcut conflicts, suppresses key repeats, and ignores locked-session activations. Its shortcut connection has a separate bus name so it cannot block the existing capture connection. Bump the bundled extension to version 3 so setup offers the update.

Why

Fixes #12589. GNOME 45–47 can run the capture extension but cannot complete shortcut setup because their portal backend lacks GlobalShortcuts. This implements the extension-owned trigger proposed in the issue's accepted triage. It also handles GDBus reporting a missing interface as InvalidArgs, distinguishing that case from a missing property without matching translated error messages.

UI Changes

Recorded on this machine in an isolated Ubuntu 24.04 / GNOME Shell 46 / Wayland session with no GlobalShortcuts portal. The capture target is a separate GTK test window. These are actual desktop captures, not mocked UI states.

Before: the original shortcut adapter and extension v2 reproduce the missing-interface error with Done disabled.

Before: GNOME shortcut setup blocked by the missing GlobalShortcuts interface

After: the updated extension registers Ctrl+Shift+W and setup can finish.

After: GNOME shortcut setup can finish

Background capture: pressing Ctrl+Shift+W while the GTK window is focused captures that window and attaches it to the T3 draft.

After: the focused GTK window is attached to the T3 draft

Validation

  • 187 focused tests passed across desktop SnapShots, portal registration, extension authorization/lifecycle, extension installation, and real private-D-Bus integration.
  • Desktop typecheck, targeted lint, formatting, and whitespace checks passed.
  • Built the desktop and server. Reproduced the original setup failure, then verified setup completion and background capture in real nested GNOME 46 with the fixed build.
  • Existing portal behavior is covered by tests; GNOME 48+ was not exercised in a live session.
  • Desktop-only change. Settings and capture commands share the desktop service. Web/mobile clients, provider adapters, and wire contracts are unchanged.

Checklist

  • This PR is small and focused on one reported bug
  • I explained what changed and why
  • I included before/after screenshots for the affected setup flow

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a new GNOME-owned global shortcut path with D-Bus lifecycle and packaging changes, broadening the existing desktop runtime behavior beyond a simple bug fix. It also adds a new static-analysis suppression in an integration test, requiring human review under the configured criteria.

The CI failure was a stale private D-Bus test fixture advertising extension version 2 after the shipped metadata moved to version 3. Updated that fixture; the real D-Bus capture test and GNOME setup tests now pass (19 tests).

Regarding Macroscope's approvability note: the D-Bus shortcut addition is the fix for #12589, where GNOME 45–47 lacks the GlobalShortcuts portal. The test-only nodeBuiltinImport directive follows the existing private D-Bus integration fixtures, which need Node subprocess APIs to start an isolated session bus. The correctness and Effect convention checks passed. The requested human review remains necessary; this is not being treated as automatic approval.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The GNOME extension now accepts client shortcut bindings over D-Bus. PortalCaptureShortcut uses this path when the GlobalShortcuts portal is unavailable. Packaging, version fixtures, integration tests, and documentation were updated.

Changes

GNOME shortcut fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extension shortcut service
apps/desktop/gnome-extension/*, package.json
The extension exposes asynchronous BindShortcut handling, manages accelerator grabs and sender ownership, emits ShortcutActivated, and packages shortcutService.js.
Portal fallback binding
apps/desktop/src/snapShot/PortalCaptureShortcut.ts, apps/desktop/src/snapShot/DesktopSnapShot.ts
PortalCaptureShortcut uses GNOME fallback binding for supported missing-interface cases, claims a separate D-Bus name, converts the accelerator, handles activation, and tracks extension ownership.
Fallback validation and documentation
apps/desktop/src/snapShot/*.test.ts, docs/internals/linux-snap-shot.md
Tests cover registration, conflicts, activation, cleanup, error handling, integration behavior, and extension version 3. Documentation describes the separate shortcut connection.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/desktop/gnome-extension/bundle.json: Added "shortcutService.js" to the files array in bundle.json, so the new module is now included in the packaged extension output.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/desktop/gnome-extension/extension.js: DBus XML adds a BindShortcut method taking name and accelerator string arguments, and a ShortcutActivated signal for shortcut binding.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/desktop/gnome-extension/extension.js: enable() constructs a ShortcutService wiring grab/ungrab via global.display.grab_accelerator/ungrab_accelerator with Main.wm.allowKeybinding, watch/unwatch via Gio.bus_watch_name_on_connection/bus_unwatch_name, activate via emitting ShortcutActivated to the sender, and an availability check requiring Wayland, unlocked session, and non-greeter; it also connects the display's accelerator-activated signal.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/desktop/gnome-extension/extension.js: Adds BindShortcutAsync which resolves ShortcutService.bind(sender, name, accelerator) before returning null, replying with org.gnome.Shell.Extensions.T3SnapShot.Failed and the error message on failure, replacing the synchronous BindShortcut DBus method.

Verified latest head 0f576741053a3bd3bda4d698b7da4b1bff19ba33: all CI jobs passed, CodeRabbit completed with no new actionable findings, both review threads are resolved, and Macroscope correctness and Effect conventions passed.

I am leaving CodeRabbit's non-blocking docstring-coverage warning unchanged: this repository's AGENTS.md asks us to document non-obvious constraints, not narrate control flow or add redundant documentation. The service ownership/lifetime contract is documented next to the service, and the separate D-Bus identity constraint is explained in the existing Linux SnapShot documentation. Adding boilerplate solely to reach an 80% docstring metric would not improve those explanations.

Macroscope's neutral approvability check still requires human review for the new GNOME shortcut/D-Bus behavior. No approval or merge is implied by the passing CI.

Reproduced on a stock Ubuntu 24.04 install (real hardware, not a nested session): GNOME Shell 46.0, Wayland, xdg-desktop-portal 1.18.4, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome 46.2, T3 Code 0.0.43-nightly.20260923.

Same as #12589: snap-shot@t3.codes v2 is ACTIVE and answers on D-Bus, and the Screenshot portal is version 2, so capture goes through the extension. The shortcut step fails with No such interface "org.freedesktop.portal.GlobalShortcuts", and the portal object doesn't export that interface. Closing the dialog then turns SnapShots back off, so the feature can't be used on 24.04 at all.

I'd love to see this merged.
