feat(source-control): search GitHub repositories when cloning - #13228
markomitranic wants to merge 7 commits into
Conversation
The GitHub clone step only accepted an exact owner/repo. Typing part of a name now searches GitHub: the signed-in account's matches first, then all of GitHub, and picking a result continues into the existing clone flow. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a cross-cutting GitHub repository-search workflow across web, mobile, RPC, authorization, and CLI layers, with unresolved findings affecting credential-host handling and clone-flow state. It also changes an auth-directory file and adds a static-analysis suppression, so the change requires human review. Not approved because:

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Editing a GitHub search can briefly leave results for the old query selectable, potentially opening the wrong repository’s clone flow. The issue is brief and recoverable, so merge risk is low. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to Search broadens discovery of repositories visible to the server’s GitHub account, including private repository names and descriptions. Existing read permissions still gate discovery, and cloning remains separately permissioned. Shared-account access and deployment compatibility are not fully established. Would it be possible to implement the optional search capability for GitLab as well, either in this PR or as a follow-up? The GitLab lookup is currently stricter than GitHub's, so search would help more there. Why GitLab needs it more: One call covers personal and group projects: glab api "projects?search=<q>&membership=true&simple=true&per_page=20&order_by=last_activity_at"Verified on gitlab.com against a real account with ~80 projects across a personal namespace and nested groups. The paths below are renamed to generic placeholders:

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot This adds a repository-search picker to the existing clone flow, which needs prior direction and scope approval. The linked #8654 asks for an Ideas discussion, and #8340 was declined; neither approves this new workflow. The simpler CLI approach and supplied demo don't replace that approval. Closing for now: please discuss this approach with maintainers, link their explicit approval, and request reconsideration. The friction of finding a repository's exact name is still a useful problem to raise. |

Why
Cloning from GitHub requires the exact
owner/repo. If you type part of a name, such assleepy, nothing is listed, and pressing Enter fails with "Repository lookup failed". In practice you leave the app, find the repository on github.com, copy its full name and paste it back. This was requested in #8654.GitHub already has a search that knows which repositories you can see, including private ones. The dialog now passes what you type to that search and lets you pick a result.
What Changed
In the GitHub step of Add Project → Clone, typing three or more characters shows matching repositories after a short pause. Your own repositories come first, followed by matches from all of GitHub. Picking one continues into the existing clone flow. Typing an exact
owner/repoand pressing Enter works as before, and the other providers are unchanged.sourceControl.searchRepositories. It uses the same permission as the existing repository lookup, and returns the name and description of each match.ghCLI the connector already uses. No new auth, tokens or GraphQL. Search is an optional provider capability, so GitLab, Forgejo, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps need no changes.<query> user:@me(top 5) runs alongside<query>(top 20), with duplicates removed. A single global search ranks by popularity, so personal repositories drop out:sleepyalone doesn't returnmarkomitranic/sleepytime-youtubein its top 20, and GitHub rejects combininguser:@mewithOR.docs/user/source-control.md.Notes for review
owner/repolookup still works.gh search reposcalls behind the existing CLI wrapper.UI Changes

Picking a result goes on to the clone destination step:
