A dispatched click moves keyboard focus into the guest page, even a hidden one in another thread. Electron reports the guest as focused before the click too, so the host document restores its previously focused element instead.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused desktop-preview bug fix that adds a small, tested focus-restoration helper while leaving unrelated automation paths unchanged. An unresolved Medium-severity finding identifies a race that may restore stale focus after a user click during the pending action, making it a separate merge-blocking correctness risk. After a successful click, the helper restores the prior host element or blurs the matching webview when restoration is not possible. After a non-interruption error, it also restores focus before rethrowing the error. Interruption errors skip restoration. ChangesPreview click focus handling

Independent confirmation that this fixes the cross-thread case. I hit it on macOS desktop: typing in a thread with no browser open, the composer kept losing focus while agents worked in other threads. Repro in the dev desktop app (Linux/Xvfb, Electron 44.4.2, copy of real data):
Results:
I opened #14331 before finding this. It restored focus on any Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) in Claude Code, running in T3 Code. |
|
Note 🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo Closing as replaced by #15008, which merged with the same host-side approach. Thank you for the diagnosis here, it pointed at the right fix. Two differences made a new PR the faster path:
#15008 also handles overlapping clicks across tabs, a click that never finishes, and a previous element that can no longer take focus. |
Fixes #10980.
What Changed
An agent
preview_clicknow leaves keyboard focus where the user had it. The web host recordsdocument.activeElementbefore the click. If the click moved focus into that tab's<webview>, the host focuses the recorded element again, or blurs the webview when nothing in the app had focus. Focus stays put when the user was already typing in that page, picked another element during the click, or focus landed in a different tab.The logic lives in
previewHostFocus.tsand wraps theclickcase inPreviewAutomationHosts. Element picking inPreviewViewalready restores focus the same way.Why
Input.dispatchMouseEventfocuses the guest page, and nothing moved focus back. The user's next keystrokes went into the page, including a hidden tab in another thread. I measured it with a probe page that logs trusted keydowns: after one agent click, 7 keys typed into another thread's composer landed in the hidden page until the user clicked back 3 seconds later.#10982 restores focus from the desktop side with
webContents.getFocusedWebContents(). In a standalone Electron 44.4.2 app with a focused<textarea>and a<webview>, that call already returns the guest before the click, so the restore skips. Callingfocus()on the host WebContents also leaves focus in the guest. Focusing the previous element inside the host document does return keyboard focus: the guest'sdocument.hasFocus()goes back tofalseand the textarea is active again. The guest's focus change is also visible in the host before the click call resolves, so the check after the click does not race.Validation
previewHostFocustests cover the restore, the blur fallback, a detached previous element, focus already in the page, a newer selection elsewhere, another tab, a click that a human click interrupts (focus stays where the user put it), and a click that fails for another reason after moving focus (focus is restored). With the helper reduced to a plain passthrough, 4 of the 8 fail.vp test runfor the new tests andPreviewAutomationHosts: 13 passed.tsc --noEmitis clean forapps/web. Targeted lint shows one existingreact(refs)warning inPreviewAutomationHosts.tsxthat this PR does not touch.Out of scope:
preview_pressstill holds page focus for about a second while its desktop path waits for the key. No user keys landed in that window during the test.Surfaces: desktop only, since previews run in Electron. Web and mobile are unchanged. No UI change.
