Review comments with a ```suggestion block show the suggestion as plain code, and the only way to take it is to commit it on the host or copy it by hand. Discussion: #14922

Suggestion blocks now render as a diff of the lines they add, with an "Apply suggestion" button in the code block header. It writes the lines into the checkout and commits nothing, so the change shows up with the rest of your local work. It targets the beside-chat thread's worktree when that thread belongs to the same project, otherwise the project folder. It shows in the Code tab thread cards and in the Summary tab.

The button is disabled, with a tooltip saying why, unless the checkout is on the pull request's head branch and the thread still points at head-side lines in the diff.

Writes go through projects.writeFile, which gains an optional replaceLines: { startLine, endLine, expected }. The server reads the file and replaces that range only while it still reads expected, keeping the file's line endings. Otherwise it refuses and leaves the file alone. If the range already holds the suggestion, it reports lines_already_replaced and the toast says "Already applied". Clicking again after a reset still works. The client takes expected from the pull request's head content, fetched only on click.

ChatMarkdown gains a small context so a surface can put one action in a fenced block's header. The PR panel uses it for suggestion blocks.

Differences from the discussion:

  • The head-branch check runs in the client, from the existing VCS status query.
  • Only GitHub reports where a multi-line suggestion starts (startLine is now in the review thread contract). On the other hosts, apply works for single-line suggestions.
  • A suggestion that deletes lines leaves nothing to recognize, so applying it twice gives the "differs from the pull request" error instead of "Already applied".

Tests cover the line replacement (CRLF, stale range, past the end, deletion, already applied) and the suggestion parsing.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces a new cross-layer workflow that parses review suggestions and mutates local checkout files, rather than making a small isolated change. Several unresolved Medium/High findings involve stale branch or revision state, parsing and indentation, partial application detection, and non-atomic writes, so the behavior warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Pull request review comments now render Apply actions for suggestion fences. The action checks the checkout and target lines, then submits a guarded line-range replacement. The write path serializes API writes and reports whether lines changed or the replacement is already present.

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to d439e

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d439e

A checkout switched between the final status check and the write could receive an uncommitted suggestion on the wrong branch. This is a narrow, recoverable race; the change is otherwise mergeable with that limitation understood.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d439e

Explicit clicks, branch checks, and matching-line validation limit exposure. However, filesystem links can redirect a suggestion outside the selected checkout, and a concurrent branch switch can invalidate the checked target.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new Apply flow passes the host-supplied review-thread path to a writer that rejects lexical traversal but does not enforce physical filesystem containment. If that path or an ancestor is a local symlink to an external file whose requested lines match the expected head content, clicking Apply can modify that external file with the server process's permissions. The underlying writer behavior predates the PR; the remote-review caller is new. Explicit user action and exact expected-line matching materially restrict this conditional exposure.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The promised head-branch restriction is checked in the client before a separate write request, not bound to the mutation. A concurrent checkout switch can therefore redirect an accepted suggestion onto another branch when its target lines still match. The immediate status refresh reduces the window, but the write contract carries no branch identity and the write semaphore does not coordinate branch switching. This weakens containment of the user-authorized edit rather than establishing an unauthenticated attack.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Ordinary application affects one selected file range in a project or matching worktree. With a local filesystem link, the effective target can extend to an existing external file writable by the server process, subject to expected-line matching. No network exfiltration, privilege escalation, or downstream execution was demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A reviewer can supply replacement text on a host-anchored thread, but cannot make markdown automatically write it. The conditional external-write path additionally requires an authorized user click, eligible thread and branch, a local link at the target path or ancestor, and externally resolved lines matching the host-derived expected text. This is a newly reachable trust-boundary concern, not a demonstrated exploit or a claim that the pre-existing writer lacked authentication.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Remote comment content crosses into local mutation only through the PR-thread action. Controls include explicit click, environment/project target selection, right-side non-outdated range gating, branch refresh, expected-line comparison, and existing write authorization. Lexical path checks are not equivalent to filesystem containment; the separate read path performs realpath containment checks that the writer does not reuse.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Expected-line mismatches fail before file mutation, and the client distinguishes changed lines from recognized already-applied content. Direct filesystem saves remain outside the documented lock guarantee, so the whole-file write can overwrite an intervening external edit. This limitation is explicit rather than a verified automatic recovery guarantee.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce physical target confinement for suggestion writes, including linked ancestors and target replacement races. Bind branch eligibility to the server-side mutation and coordinate application-managed checkout changes with it, while keeping direct external filesystem edits explicitly outside any unsupported atomicity promise.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Serialize replaceLines updates per path on the server.

Two clients can call projects.writeFile for the same file concurrently. If both reads finish before either write, both expected-line checks can pass. Each call then writes a complete file built from its own snapshot, so the later write can discard the earlier edit. The client scheduler does not protect requests from separate runtimes. Use a server-side per-path lock across the read, check, and write.

Suggestion blocks in review comments now render as diffs, with an
"Apply" action in the code block header that writes the lines into the
checkout without committing. It only applies while the checkout is on
the pull request's head branch and the target lines still match the
host, and targets the beside-chat thread's worktree when there is one.

ChatMarkdown gains a small context so a surface can add one action to
a fenced block's header. projects.writeFile gains an optional
replaceLines precondition, so the server refuses a stale range instead
of overwriting newer work.

Suggestion fences close on a longer run of the same character and drop
the indentation the fence sits at. A partial edit is no longer reported
as already applied. Apply reads the checkout's branch again before
writing, and reads only the head side so files the pull request adds
work too.

Thanks for proposing local suggestion application. This adds an Apply suggestion workflow and a line-replacement API across 14 files, which requires explicit approval under prior approval. A discussion link alone does not establish that approval; please agree on direction and a smaller scope in Ideas discussion #14922 before requesting reconsideration.
