…ble bypass mode
Claude CLI quietly starts in default mode when permissions.disableBypassPermissionsMode
is "disable", then rejects T3's setPermissionMode("bypassPermissions") on the next turn,
which surfaces as a provider error.
The capability probe now asks Claude for bypassPermissions. When Claude refuses, the
Claude snapshot stops offering Full access, and threads set to Full access run in Auto
on the server, web, and mobile.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change detects whether Claude supports bypass permissions, restricts its available runtime modes when it does not, and applies a shared fallback for unsupported runtime modes across server, web, and mobile. ChangesClaude capability and runtime modes

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Keep control-request errors distinct from a policy refusal.
If setPermissionMode fails for a reason other than disabled bypass mode, Effect.orElseSucceed still records false. Provider status then removes Full access, although the probe did not establish that Claude disallows it. Record false only for a recognized refusal; leave other failures unknown so a later probe can determine availability. (effect.website)
Based on learnings, a failed capability request must not become the same value as a confirmed unsupported response.

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot Closing for missing verification of the changed picker and fallback behavior. The supplied screenshot shows the original provider error, and the PR explicitly says the after-picker screenshot is still to come. Please add clear before/after captures showing Full access unavailable under the managed policy and Auto selected for an existing Full access thread, with the focused checks and observed results. The verification rule requires UI before/after evidence. Also obtain maintainer direction on changing the existing Supervised fallback to Auto under the prior-approval rule; #4927 currently contains contributor reports, not approval of that behavior choice. Address those points and request reconsideration. |
Problem
When Claude settings set
permissions.disableBypassPermissionsModeto"disable", which enterprise managed policies often do, Full access threads fail from the second turn on. The CLI quietly starts indefaultinstead ofbypassPermissions, so the first turn works. On the next turn T3 tries to restore the mode, and the CLI rejects it withCannot set permission mode to bypassPermissions because it is disabled by settings or configuration. Reported in #4927.Change
bypassPermissions. The probe never sends a prompt, and the CLI checks every settings source itself, managed policy included. If the CLI refuses, the Claude snapshot leavesfull-accessout ofsupportedRuntimeModes. Web, mobile and the server already filter on that field, so Full access leaves the picker. It comes back on the next probe if the policy is lifted.RuntimePolicy, the web composer and the mobile picker. Pi and Grok both offer Full access, so their behavior is unchanged.Scope and approval
