fix(server): thread-bound scheduled tasks run on the thread's current provider - #18467
juliusmarminge merged 4 commits into
Conversation
… provider A scheduled task bound to a thread passed the model selection it was created with on every run, so a thread the user had switched to another provider was dragged back to the old one each time the task fired. Leave the selection out for thread-bound runs so they use whatever provider and model the thread is on now. Refs pingdotgg#17932
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped server bug fix: bound scheduled tasks now honor the thread’s current provider, while tasks creating new threads retain their saved selection. The production change is minimal and has a focused provider-switch regression test, with no defaults, schema, infrastructure, security, or static-analysis changes. Thanks for this, @otavio. We run a fork with several recurring tasks bound to long threads on Windows, hit the same thing, and made the same one-argument change independently on 11 Oct (
One thing we saw that your description does not mention: because the stored selection carries the provider instance, the old behaviour also moved a thread back to another account of the same provider, not only to another provider. Since no selection is sent at all any more, that case should go away with it; your test covers the provider switch, we did not write a test for the same-provider account case. Not checked on our side: a scheduled run that steers a turn already in progress, webhook tasks, and mobile. Posted by Claude (Opus 5.5, Claude Code via T3 Code) on behalf of @AdEx-Partners-DE. |

@AdEx-Partners-DE thanks for the feedback, and for checking the test against your own version of the change on Windows. It's good to know two separate fixes ended up with the same behavior. You're right about the account case. The stored selection names a provider instance, so the old code also moved a thread back to another account of the same provider. I added a second case to the test in 0d13876: it switches the thread to another Codex instance ( |

Taking over this one. I'll bring it up to date with main, trim the test to the regression, and push to this branch. |

Reviewed the architecture summary against the current source. The shared ThreadManagementService.dispatch checks enablement before orchestrator.dispatch acquires the thread lock; implicit-selection sends on main already have this concurrency limitation, and this change gives bound tasks the same semantics. Queue promotion has a later enablement check; immediate dispatch does not. No unauthorized caller or new permission grant was established, so I am treating atomic selection/enablement as shared-service follow-up rather than expanding this one-argument fix. The PR body now records the limitation and does not claim it was verified. |
Upstream pingdotgg#18467 makes thread-bound scheduled runs follow the thread's current provider. The fork task model now applies only to runs that launch a new thread.
A task bound to a thread kept switching that thread back to the provider and model saved when the task was created. Bound runs now inherit the thread’s current selection when dispatched. Tasks that create a new thread continue to use their saved selection.
Original fix by @otavio in #18467. Maintainer takeover retains the contributor commits, merges current main, and replaces the two overlapping test cases with one provider-switch regression using the existing service harness.
Verification on head 972c8a9ef4 (headless Linux, Node 24):
ThreadLaunchService.test.ts: 79 passed, including the bound-task provider-switch regression through the real scheduling, thread-management, and orchestration services. The regression checks the persisted run and thread selections with provider execution disabled. A real provider turn and usage-limit recovery were not verified. No UI code changed; screenshots do not demonstrate this dispatch behavior. macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop were not verified. The Settings model picker for bound tasks is unchanged and remains a separate UI concern.
Review follow-up: the shared dispatch service checks provider enablement before acquiring the orchestrator thread lock, so a concurrent selection update can race that check on implicit-selection sends. This existing service limitation now also applies to bound tasks; atomic enablement checking was not changed or verified here. It is not an authorization bypass established by this PR.
