Problem

A client with legacy local model favorites saves settings in a loop to a server built before #16816. That server drops the migrateModelPreferences key, saves anyway, keeps reporting favorites: null, and pushes settingsUpdated. The web hook cleared its guard in .finally, so every push sent the migration again. In the field this was 15 to 30 updateSettings calls a second, in bursts. The mobile thread settings sheet sent the same patch with no guard at all.

Fixes #18572

Change

The web hook useMigrateModelPreferences and the mobile ThreadSettingsSheet now try the migration once per environment connection. Each waits until the environment is connected, then remembers the connection generation it tried. The generation comes from the environment supervisor's connection state (environmentCatalog.stateAtom), which already increases on every established connection. A save that succeeds but leaves favorites null does not retry within that connection. A reconnect, for example after the server is upgraded, tries once more.

On web, a small derived atom reads only generation, so connection progress updates do not re-render every settings consumer.

Scope and approval

Maintainer triage on the issue asked for this fix: "try the migration once per environment connection, and don't retry when favorites is still null after a successful save" (comment). The server side of the incident, an external settings.json edit reverted by these saves, is #18571 and is not part of this PR.

Before and after

Before, on the main client: opening Settings > Providers for the old server starts the loop, and it keeps saving through two external settings.json edits (3 to 10 saves a second, 142 in 21 seconds).

After, on this branch: the same steps save once, and the two external edits cause no saves.

Verification

  • cd apps/web && vp test run src/hooks/useSettings.migration.test.tsx src/hooks/useSettings.test.ts src/hooks/useSettings.favorites.test.tsx src/hooks/useSettings.sync.test.tsx
    • At main (f498b35) with the new test file: AssertionError: expected "vi.fn()" to be called 1 times, but got 4 times for "migrates once when the server drops the migration and keeps pushing settings".
    • With a once-per-session gate and no reconnect key: expected "vi.fn()" to be called 2 times, but got 1 times for "migrates again after the environment reconnects".
    • Without the connected-phase check: expected "vi.fn()" to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times for "waits for the environment to connect before migrating".
    • At the head: 4 files, 44 of 44 tests pass.
  • vp run typecheck in apps/web and in apps/mobile: no errors. vp lint on the changed files adds no warnings.
  • Live run against a real t3 serve 0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2935 with a scratch home, paired as a remote environment from the web dev client, with one legacy favorite seeded in client settings:
    • Before (main client): after Settings > Providers opened for the old server, it saved 3 to 10 times a second without stopping, 142 saves in about 21 seconds, through two external settings.json edits.
    • After (this branch): one save when the page mounted the migration, then none through two external edits that each pushed settings to the client.
    • After, reconnect: restarting the old server made the client reconnect, and it sent exactly one more migration save, then none on later pushes.
    • The local environment still migrates once: with favorites removed from the dev server's settings.json, a reload wrote the legacy favorite back.
  • Mobile is not captured live. Its gate is the same change in ThreadSettingsSheet.tsx and is covered by typecheck only.

… older servers

A server that predates migrateModelPreferences drops the key and keeps
reporting null favorites. The client sent the migration again after every
settings push, and each save pushed settings again, so it saved to that
server 15 to 30 times a second.

Attempt the migration once per environment per session. The next favorites
or model-preference save still carries it.
Key the migration gate on the environment's connection generation, which the
supervisor bumps on every established connection. A successful save that
leaves favorites null still does not retry within one connection, and a
reconnect, for example after the server is upgraded, tries once more.
Shorten the gate comment to the server constraint it guards, and name the
test fixture for the old server it stands for.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 613894d

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized compatibility fix that changes an existing migration to run once per connected environment generation, preventing runaway writes on older servers while preserving retries after reconnects. The accompanying tests cover the lifecycle behavior, and no product defaults or static-analysis overrides are changed.

📝 Walkthrough

The web and mobile clients now track model-preference migration attempts by environment connection generation. They attempt migration only when preferences are loaded and the environment is connected. Web tests cover repeated settings pushes, connection-generation changes, and disconnected environments.

The clients require a connected generation and record it before saving a non-null migration patch. They skip further attempts for that generation. Web tests cover repeated settings pushes, a later generation, and connection readiness.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 61389

Mobile migration saves are currently limited to one per connection, but this behavior lacks a regression test. The change is mergeable with a focused mobile test recommended.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 61389

The change reduces repeated settings writes without expanding the existing settings-write authority. A connection-replacement edge case can delay migration because attempt tracking outlives the connection that supplied its generation.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Migration-attempt state is module-owned, but connection generations are supervisor-owned. Re-registration or route replacement can recreate a supervisor for the same environment ID. If its new generation equals the retained attempt value, both clients skip migration even though this is a new connection. Unlike ordinary reconnects, this recovery path can require another reconnect or application reload before migration resumes.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Each automatic migration targets the already-selected environment's settings. The changed effects do not introduce a fleet-wide write target, alternate credentials, or a different settings endpoint. The established supervisor-epoch concern delays a write rather than redirecting it to another environment.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Repeated server settings notifications can still cause the migration effects to reevaluate, but cannot independently cause repeated migration submissions within the recorded generation. Connection changes remain a retry trigger. The reviewed client path establishes reduced write amplification, not a new privilege or authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Connection phase and generation are read-only eligibility inputs. Environment identity remains explicit in the settings command, which retains permission authorization and guarded RPC dispatch. Server-side authorization enforcement was not fully hydrated in this review.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Recording before submission contains retry amplification across save failures, interruption, concurrent mounted consumers, and remounts sharing the same module instance. The tradeoff is deferred recovery: settlement does not clear the marker, and supervisor replacement can reuse a generation already recorded by that instance.

Skip the migration until the environment is connected, so a pre-connect
attempt keyed on generation 0 cannot send it a second time when the first
connection lands.

Re the Macroscope approvability note and the CodeRabbit review: the correctness concern was that a migration could go out once before the first connection and again when it lands. 613894d fixes it. Both clients now wait for the environment to be connected before they migrate, and a new test covers that case. The CodeRabbit summary comment needs no change.

Add a focused mobile migration regression test.

The web tests cover this behavior only through useEnvironmentModelPreferences. They do not render the separate mobile ThreadSettingsSessionProvider.

Test that the mobile path waits for connection, saves once per generation, and saves again after a generation change. Without this test, a regression can make mobile resend migrateModelPreferences on every legacy settings push because older servers keep favorites as null.

Re the CodeRabbit nitpick asking for a mobile regression test of ThreadSettingsSessionProvider: declined. Mobile tests in this repo cover pure logic only, and none of them render a component. This provider imports 47 modules, including native, navigation, and Reanimated, so a render test would mock most of the sheet to reach five lines. The mobile gate has the same shape as the web hook, and the web tests cover its three cases: it waits for a connection, saves once per connection generation, and saves again after a reconnect. The PR body notes that mobile is covered by typecheck only.
