…ve their project A self-managed GitLab served under a URL prefix (glab's `subfolder`) has that prefix in its browser URLs, so a merge request linked from one was stored as `gitlab/team/project`. glab adds the prefix to every API call itself, so GitLab was asked for a project at `gitlab/team/project`, which does not exist, and every read and the watcher failed with a 404. The GitLab provider now asks GitLab for the project's `path_with_namespace` (`glab repo view <browser URL> --output json`, remembered for ten minutes) and uses it for every API call. The stored repository and the links built from it stay as they are, so merge requests that were already linked start working without a migration. glab, not string handling, decides where the prefix ends, so a group that shares the prefix's name is left alone. If GitLab does not answer, the repository is used as given. Fixes pingdotgg#20226
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained GitLab bug fix that resolves installation-prefixed project paths, caches the lookup, preserves the prior fallback behavior, and adds targeted coverage across read and write operations. It introduces no schema, deployment, security, billing, product-default, or static-analysis changes. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Key the project-path cache on the repository ref itself instead of a NUL-joined string that was split back apart, drop the typed read error that the fallback discarded, and table-drive the three resolveProjectPath cases that differed only in their inputs.

Taking over this one for batch worktree-git-11. I will reduce the tests, rebuild project identity resolution, and verify against an isolated GitLab installation under a URL prefix before publishing. No merge. |

Thanks @fixfon — using GitLab’s project lookup to resolve an installation-prefixed MR URL is the right direction. I rebuilt this as a small contract/persistence layer followed by the server fix:
I compared your original diff with both layers. The project JSON decoding and CLI-based identity resolution landed in the upper layer. The missing URL provenance landed in the lower layer and its MCP/reactor consumers above it. Silent fallback was deliberately removed because two real projects can share the same apparent path. The original regression coverage was reduced to two provider behavior cases, one MCP failure case, and extensions to existing persistence/service/reactor tests. The published head passed 559 focused tests and nine composed cases against a real GitLab 18.4.6 installation mounted at /gitlab, including colliding HTTP/SSH paths, persisted sync and initial watch state. Both reviewers completed four rounds without remaining blocking findings. Evidence and platform limits are in the replacement descriptions; actual watch wakes and native clients were not verified. The upper layer requires human approval and still has a browser highlighting CI failure after one retry; it is not merge-ready. The lower layer’s checks pass. No PR was merged. Closing this original in favor of that stack, with credit to your implementation for establishing the GitLab behavior. |
Rebuilt from fixfon’s proposal in #20241; URL provenance follow-up remains unpublished.
Problem
On a self-managed GitLab served under a URL prefix (glab's
subfolder, e.g.https://code.example.com/gitlab), linkinghttps://code.example.com/gitlab/team/subgroup/project/-/merge_requests/9stored the repository asgitlab/team/subgroup/project. glab already prepends the prefix to API calls, so every request for that merge request returned 404 and the watcher gave up after eight failures.Change
The GitLab provider now resolves the project's real
path_with_namespaceviaglab repo view <browser URL> --output json(cached for ten minutes, failures not cached) and uses it for every API call. The stored repository and the links built from it are unchanged, so browser links keep the prefix and already linked merge requests work at read time without a data migration. glab decides where the prefix ends, so no segment is stripped by string guessing and a group literally namedgitlabis left alone. If the lookup fails, the stored repository is used as before.Scope and approval
Fixes #20226. The bug was confirmed by a maintainer on the issue, and this follows the suggested direction (resolve the API project identity via glab, keep the browser URL for links).
