Packaged web clients can include a production Clerk key while being served on localhost, a private IP, or a Tailscale hostname. Clerk rejects those origins, but the app previously mounted its authentication runtime and offered cloud controls anyway.

The public-config availability check now excludes unsupported browser origins for production keys. It derives the configured domain from the existing publishable-key parser, accepts the root and subdomains over HTTPS on the standard port, and keeps development keys and the Electron auth shell available. Startup, onboarding, settings, and search already share this check, so local pairing stays available without loading Clerk.

Taken over from @r-near's #20424, retaining contributor commits and merging main.

Verification:

  • Fresh test pass reduced the existing suite from 21 to 16 cases. Both private-origin regressions fail on main. All 16 availability cases and 25 focused auth tests passed; targeted lint, formatting and web typecheck passed. One independent full-diff review round by Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6 Sol found no code issues. Human approval remains a separate gate.
  • Real Clerk SDK: main mounted a production instance on localhost, which remained unloaded and logged HTTP 400 with the production-domain rejection. The guarded build leaves window.Clerk absent. A fresh incognito visit to the supported hosted origin loaded the same production Clerk instance successfully; no sign-in was performed.
  • The headless Linux local app retains normal pairing and environment settings. Before/after screenshots use matching state and 1280×800 viewport with the same Liberation Sans fallback for the headless browser.
  • Clerk's production-key guidance documents the configured-domain, HTTPS and standard-port restrictions. Cached raw environment probes were inconsistent and were excluded from acceptance evidence.
Before: unsupported cloud controls After: local pairing without Clerk
Before production Clerk origin guard After production Clerk origin guard

Live SDK verification.

Human approval remains required by the repository's existing authentication-change policy. Not verified: real sign-in, custom production deployments, development-key sign-in, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, or Electron desktop. Their preserved code paths have focused coverage; no claim of native runtime verification is made. No merge was performed.

Implementation: GPT-6.1 Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code; tests: GPT-6 Astra; adversarial review: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes production Clerk initialization and cloud-auth availability based on the browser origin, affecting startup, sign-in, onboarding, and connection/settings flows. Although the implementation is focused and covered by targeted tests, the authentication behavior change warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

hasCloudPublicConfig now validates browser origins for production Clerk keys. Tests cover accepted and rejected origins, development keys, desktop clients, invalid keys, and global cleanup.

Changes: Cloud configuration validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Production key hostname validation
apps/web/src/cloud/publicConfig.ts, apps/web/src/cloud/publicConfig.test.ts
hasCloudPublicConfig requires the configured Clerk key, JWT template, and relay URL. Browser clients using production keys must use HTTPS on the default or 443 port, with a hostname matching the decoded Clerk domain or a subdomain. Tests cover accepted and rejected origins, development keys, desktop clients, invalid keys, and global cleanup.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2671c

The supported browser origins remain eligible for cloud auth, while the previously identified insecure-origin gap is addressed. No unresolved issue blocks merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 35d1d

The change narrows when production browser cloud authentication starts while leaving local authentication separate. No introduced security defect was established, but persisted-credential recovery paths were only partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly changed security-relevant scope is managed-auth availability in browser clients using the configured live Clerk key. The hostname comparison narrows eligible hosts relative to the baseline; it does not introduce a new tenant, resource, or privilege grant.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected CloudSession capability reads the managed relay identity and explicitly returns an authentication-blocked error when the session or Clerk token is absent. Primary-environment authentication is exposed separately. This is direct counterevidence to treating cloud-disabled startup as an automatic local-credential fallback, but does not establish every downstream cached-credential branch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing mounted provider clears managed identity before sign-out or account-change cleanup, queues relay-environment removal and token-cache reset, and waits for queued work before activating another account. Cancellation prevents a superseded effect from activating a session, and unmount clears identity. These lifecycle controls are unchanged by the hostname gate; cleanup completion does not itself prove successful durable removal.

Taking over this one. I’ll keep the work on this PR, verify the production Clerk origin behavior, and reduce the tests before rebuilding the guard. Thanks @r-near for the focused reproduction.
