On Android foldables in split view, opening a thread or PR from the sidebar slid it in like a new layer. It is not a layer. It replaces the detail pane next to the sidebar, so the slide made no sense.

Now Thread and PullRequest open with no animation while split view is on. This matches how iPad split view swaps the detail column. Compact phones keep the slide, and screens that do stack on top of a thread (files, terminal, and so on) keep theirs.

Before (left) and after (right) on a Pixel Fold emulator, unfolded, Android 17 (API 37). Each side opens a thread from the empty state, then switches to a second thread.

In the split view, Thread and PullRequest replace the detail pane next to
the sidebar. They are not a layer on top of Home, so the default push slide
made no sense. Turn the animation off for them while split view is on.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a narrowly scoped Android navigation fix, limited to removing the slide-in transition for Thread and PullRequest destinations in split view. Because that behavior changes the product’s default user-facing transition on a production path, it warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The root navigator now selects Android destination animation options using the route name and split-view state. In split view, Thread and PullRequest receive "none". The existing presentation behavior for SettingsSheet and NewTaskSheet remains in place.

Changes: Android navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select destination animations
apps/mobile/src/lib/android-workspace-navigation.ts, apps/mobile/src/Stack.tsx
The new helper returns "none" for split-view Thread and PullRequest routes, and undefined otherwise. The root navigator uses this result for Android routes other than SettingsSheet and NewTaskSheet.

On Android foldables, selecting another thread or pull request from Files or Terminal may still slide during the workspace reset. Navigation works, but the intended motionless swap is inconsistent.

Make workspace resets use the destination animation.

AdaptiveWorkspaceLayout calls useAndroidWorkspaceSelection when a user selects a thread. If ThreadFiles or ThreadTerminal is on top, the reset removes that route. Android then uses the old top route's default animation, so the new Thread or PullRequest route's "none" option is ignored.

Update the reset path to apply the destination animation explicitly. Do not disable animation for all split-view routes, because Files and Terminal must retain their normal push animation.
