Problem

A T3 Connect socket authenticates with a DPoP access token that the server issues for one hour (EnvironmentAuth.ts, ttl: Duration.hours(1)). Since #17370 the server ends a socket when the session it authenticated with expires (ws.ts races the RPC socket against SessionStore.awaitInvalidation, which sleeps until expiresAt). Since #9594 the client never renews a live socket's credential, so every T3 Connect socket drops when its token expires. The client then shows "Reconnecting...", waits out a backoff, mints a token, reconnects, and resyncs.

Measured in #21302 on Joseph's machines (desktop app on macOS, servers on acerlinux and lenovolinux, nightly 0.1.1-nightly.20261018.3315):

  • Both clean drops matched token expiry. The client-measured socket lifetimes were 3,599,590 ms and 3,598,987 ms, and the server ended the first one 34 ms after its token expired.
  • A reconnect that reused a cached token expiring 5 minutes later gave a socket that lived about 5 minutes. getDpopToken reuses any cached token with more than DPOP_ACCESS_TOKEN_REFRESH_SKEW_MS (60 s) left.
  • Each drop was reported as "<label> disconnected. Your DNS or firewall may be blocking T3 Connect…". On main, fix(client-runtime): a dropped session no longer reads as a failed connection #18469 already keeps that text out of the connection status ("Reconnecting..."), but it is still the connectionLost trace's failure detail.
  • Each drop cost a reconnect 3 to 5 s later and a resync: 7 subscribeThread, 10 subscribeVcsStatus and 15 assets.createUrl calls, plus 6.2 s refetching the shell snapshot.

Expected (from #21302): the client renews the credential before it expires, and the live socket survives or is handed off without a visible failure.

Change

EnvironmentSupervisor (packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts) now replaces a connection before its DPoP token expires:

  • While connected on a lease whose HTTP authorization is a DPoP token, a third racer joins the session's closed and its monitor. It waits until the token is within DPOP_ACCESS_TOKEN_REFRESH_SKEW_MS (60 s) of expiry, the point where getDpopToken stops reusing it, so the replacement mints a new token. It then opens a replacement connection on the same route without reporting progress.
  • When the replacement is ready, the supervisor publishes its prepared and session. The connection state stays connected, and the transport generation doesn't change. Durable subscriptions and RPC query atoms already follow supervisor.session.
  • The previous socket stays open until its token expires, so requests already running on it can finish. The server closes it then; the client closes its scope 60 s after the handoff in any case.
  • A failed replacement is retried with the usual jittered backoff while the token is still valid. Past expiry, the server's close and the normal reconnect take over, as on main.
  • After a handoff, the next one waits at least the skew. Otherwise a server that issued tokens shorter than the skew would get a new handoff, with its own socket, right after each one. Such a session now ends at expiry and reconnects with backoff, as on main. Today's server issues 1-hour tokens.
  • Each connection now has its own child scope, so a replacement can close one without ending the attempt. The better-route ticker is scoped to its monitor, so a replaced session doesn't leave a ticker running.

Relative to #9582 and #9594. #9582 kept relay sockets alive across renewal by preparing a replacement before the token expired. #9594 removed that because HTTP requests no longer needed the socket's credential, and at the time a socket wasn't tied to its session's expiry. Its notes in docs/internals/connection-runtime.md give the costs of replacing a healthy socket: it "would interrupt conversations and change the transport generation without a transport failure." #17370 then made the server close sockets at expiry, so the socket itself now needs a fresh credential, and the alternative is the drop. This PR keeps #9594's design:

  • HTTP still renews per request and never replaces a socket. Only the socket's own token expiry triggers a replacement.
  • The transport generation doesn't change, so generation-keyed refreshes (Git refs) don't rerun.
  • Running requests keep the old socket until the server would have closed it anyway, so nothing is cut earlier than it is today.

It is also smaller than #9582: supervisor.ts changes by +102/−18 lines, against +259/−50 there. There is no generation bookkeeping or progress plumbing, and a failed candidate is cleaned up by closing its own scope, not by tracking its fiber.

Alternatives I didn't take. Refusing cached tokens close to expiry for new sockets would only lengthen the shortest socket; with this change, a socket opened on a 5-minute token is handed off before it expires. A distinguishable close code would need the server to send it and every client to recognize it, and with the handoff there is no expiry close left to classify unless renewal fails for the whole last minute. Renewing the live socket's credential in place would avoid even the resubscription, but needs a new RPC and server support, which is a protocol decision for maintainers.

What this doesn't change:

  • Subscriptions still move to the new session. Threads resume from their sequence (threads.ts, afterSequence), and an open thread briefly shows "Syncing messages..." while its stream catches up. The shell reloads its HTTP snapshot, because shell.ts deliberately treats every new session that way ("A new session reloads the authoritative HTTP snapshot so a valid cursor cannot preserve incomplete cached data"). Skipping that for a handoff would change that rule, so I left it.
  • If no replacement succeeds within the token's last minute, for example with the relay down that whole time, the socket drops as on main.
  • Servers from before fix(auth): show connection permissions and enforce session lifetime #17370 don't close sockets at expiry. They now get an hourly handoff they don't need.

The tests' fake driver now closes a DPoP session's socket at its token's expiry, as the server has since #17370. Two tests asserted that a socket outlives its credential, #9594's premise, which #17370 made false. I rewrote them and added five more. I also rewrote the paragraph of docs/internals/connection-runtime.md that said credential expiry doesn't close the socket.

Scope and approval

Verification

All commands ran in packages/client-runtime or the repo root on f9825c38e8, which is origin/main at 8cd9641f76 plus this PR's three commits. The live check ran on the first commit one rebase earlier, on d8e9fd267e. The three main commits since then don't touch the client runtime or the server's auth and WebSocket code. The two later commits (route learning after a handoff, and handoff spacing) don't change when a handoff happens for the 1-hour and 3-minute tokens used there.

Tests. The tests' fake driver now closes a DPoP session's socket at its token's expiry, as the server does (see Change). The tests use TestClock.

Command Result
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts, with supervisor.ts reverted to origin/main 7 failed, 59 passed. The 7 failures are the new or rewritten tests below. Five fail on session counts (expected 1 to be 2, or expected 4 to be 6), since nothing hands off. The two that wait for a new session time out: the one that uses the real authorization service, and "learns routes from the replacement session after a token handoff". The latter also fails on the first commit alone, since the replacement path didn't learn routes yet.
The two spacing tests, on 4b928489de (the commit before the spacing change) Both fail: expected 132 to be 2 (back-to-back handoffs) and expected 11 to be 6 (a handoff every 30 s)
Same command, with the fix 66 passed
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/connection/ packages/client-runtime/src/authorization/ 11 files, 225 tests passed
flock ~/.cache/t3-heavy.lock vp run --no-cache typecheck in packages/client-runtime Exit 0, no diagnostics in the changed files
vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives and vp fmt --check, on the changed files Clean
  • moves a relay session to a renewed token before the server ends it at expiry. Nothing happens at 58 minutes. At 59 minutes, 60 s before expiry, a second session is published on access-token-2. The first socket is released only at its expiry. After two hours there have been 3 sessions. The state never left connected (the recorded phases are exactly ["connected"]), the generation is still 1, a replaceBeforeExpiry span was recorded, and no connectionLost span was.
  • keeps the session while a failed replacement retries before expiry. The first replacement fails. The active session stays, and the state stays connected with no failure. The retry 2 s later succeeds.
  • releases a replacement still synchronizing when the server ends the session. A replacement that never becomes ready is released along with the expired session, and the supervisor falls back to the normal reconnect.
  • does not hand off again when renewed tokens expire within the refresh skew. Every token lasts 30 s. The first session's token is already inside the skew, so it is replaced once, right away. The renewed token is too short for another handoff, so after 29 s there are 2 sessions.
  • waits at least the refresh skew between handoffs. Every token lasts 90 s. Handoffs come at 30 s and then every 60 s, so after 5 minutes there are 6 sessions, and the state is still connected in generation 1.
  • renews a nearly expired cached token for a new socket and HTTP shares it covers the 5-minute socket from [Bug]: T3 Connect sockets close when the 1-hour DPoP access token expires, reported as a DNS/firewall problem, then fully resync #21302, with the real RemoteEnvironmentAuthorization and fake HTTP. The socket opens on a cached token that expires in 5 minutes. At 4 minutes, the supervisor mints one token and opens a second socket (2 websocket tickets, 1 /oauth/token). The first socket is released at 5 minutes. An HTTP session read afterwards uses the new token without another mint.
  • Rewritten: keeps a healthy relay session when its HTTP access token expires and refreshes HTTP authorization without replacing the active relay session. Both asserted that a socket stays open after its credential expires, which the server no longer allows. They became the first and last tests above. HTTP still renews per request: this PR doesn't touch environmentHttpAuth.ts or authorization/service.ts.

Live check against a real server. Environment: lenovolinux, Ubuntu 26.04, Node 26.12.0.

  • A scratch server with main's server code (this PR doesn't change apps/server) ran on a fresh home: node apps/server/src/bin.ts serve --base-dir <fresh> --host 127.0.0.1, with T3_SERVICE_LAUNCHER_CONTEXT, T3_BOOT_SERVICE_UNIT and T3CODE_HOME unset.
  • Two Node clients ran side by side against it. before imports packages/client-runtime from main, and after imports it from this branch. Each runs the real EnvironmentSupervisor, ConnectionDriver, RpcSession (Node's WebSocket) and RemoteEnvironmentAuthorization. The DPoP proofs come from the web app's cloud/dpop.ts (WebCrypto P-256).
  • Only the relay is stubbed. Its connectEnvironment mints a one-time pairing credential with t3 auth pairing create --json, the same kind of credential the server's t3MintCredential gives the real relay. So /oauth/token, /api/auth/websocket-ticket, the /ws upgrade and SessionStore.awaitInvalidation are the real server code.
  • Each client probes its current session every 20 s. Socket lifetimes on the server come from its GET /ws spans, matched to auth_sessions through the ticket's session id.

Real 1-hour TTL, unmodified server. Both clients ran for 66 minutes and connected at 21:39:13 UTC. On the server, their tokens expired at 22:39:13.

Shortened TTL, several expiries. To see repeated expiries in minutes, I also set the DPoP TTL to 3 minutes by editing EnvironmentAuth.ts in a throwaway checkout of main (not part of this PR), and ran both clients for 9 minutes:

Not checked:

  • The desktop, web and mobile apps themselves. They share this supervisor, and the iOS app is probably affected the same way ([Bug]: T3 Connect sockets close when the 1-hour DPoP access token expires, reported as a DNS/firewall problem, then fully resync #21302), but the live check runs the shared client runtime in Node, not in Electron, a browser or React Native.
  • The real T3 Connect relay and cloudflared tunnel. The stub mints the same kind of credential locally, so relay latency isn't measured.
  • The shell and thread state services during a handoff. From the code, thread streams resume from their sequence and the shell reloads its HTTP snapshot on the new session, as described under Change.

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, orchestrated from T3 Code.

…en expires instead of dropping

The server closes a WebSocket when the session it authenticated with
expires (pingdotgg#17370), and a T3 Connect socket authenticates with a DPoP
access token that lasts an hour. Since pingdotgg#9594 removed the supervisor's
socket renewal, nothing renews it, so every T3 Connect socket dropped at
its token's expiry, waited out a backoff, minted a new token and
resynced (pingdotgg#21302).

The supervisor now opens a replacement connection on the same route once
the token is inside its refresh skew, where the authorization service
mints a new token, and moves the session to it while staying connected
and keeping the transport generation. The previous socket stays open
until its token expires, for requests already running on it. A failed
replacement retries with backoff until expiry; after that the server's
close and the normal reconnect take over, as before.

After a token renewal, the replacement relay session's initialConfig.directEndpoints are never merged into currentEntry, so the supervisor can stay on T3 Connect even when a direct route is available. The replacement path publishes replacement.lease without calling learnRoutesFrom; run that flow for the replacement lease as well.

Note

Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, writing on behalf of @josephv123.

Right. On main, the drop at expiry reconnected through the normal path, which runs learnRoutesFrom, so a handoff that skipped it would have stopped picking up direct routes the server reports. Fixed in 4b92848: the replacement loop now runs learnRoutesFrom for the replacement lease, forked the same way as at connect.

New test: "learns routes from the replacement session after a token handoff". It counts learnRoutes calls: 1 after connect, 2 after the handoff. It fails without the change, and supervisor.test.ts now passes 64/64.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The production supervisor now performs an automatic DPoP-authenticated socket handoff before expiry, adding concurrent connection, retry, and scope-lifecycle behavior to an existing path. The replacement flow also has an unresolved Medium finding concerning missed direct-route learning, so the authentication-sensitive runtime change warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The supervisor now attempts to replace DPoP connections before token expiry. A successful replacement becomes the active session without changing the connection generation. The previous session remains open until its token expires.

Changes: DPoP connection replacement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Schedule replacement attempts
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts
For DPoP leases, the supervisor waits until the refresh-skew window, then retries connections on the active route when available. Attempts are limited by the token’s remaining lifetime.
Hand off the active session
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts
The supervisor establishes a replacement in a child scope. On success, it updates the active connection and session, clears the unanswered-probe flag, and learns routes. It closes the old scope after the refresh-skew delay.
Test replacement and document behavior
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts, docs/internals/connection-runtime.md
Tests cover handoff timing, route learning, failed attempts, expiry during synchronization, and cached-token renewal. Documentation describes socket handoff and token-expiry behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f9825

If a replacement connection stalls during setup, the client may still fall back to a normal reconnect at token expiry, as before this change. Consider adding a bounded per-attempt deadline, but this is not a merge blocker.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f9825

The replacement lifecycle retains existing authorization checks and bounds failed attempts by token expiry. No introduced privilege expansion was established. Account-change handling during overlapping sessions remains an incompletely verified boundary, so the assessment is not minimal risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new lifecycle applies to DPoP-authorized environment leases, including direct t3-connect profiles as well as relay connections. Non-DPoP leases do not enter pre-expiry replacement. Direct replacement preparation still carries the expected environment identifier.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Credential-change termination remains restricted to relay-target leases, although direct t3-connect profiles also use DPoP. This predicate predates the PR. The new handoff does not compare the old lease's cloud identity with the replacement's identity; current-token validation and session-consumer switching provide countercontrols, but complete account-transition isolation was not demonstrated.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Replacement scopes remain owned by the enclosing scoped connection attempt. Failure closes the replacement scope, successful handoff schedules old-scope cleanup, and a replacement is not published when connection intent is already undesired. These controls contain ordinary failure and shutdown without intentionally extending token validity.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make cloud-session generation an explicit lease and handoff invariant, so account changes can invalidate both pending replacements and obsolete DPoP sockets across relay and direct routes. This is boundary hardening, not a verified PR-introduced vulnerability.

Explanation

Issue [#21302] requires renewal before DPoP expiry and a handoff without a visible failure or full reconnect resync. supervisor.ts waits for the DPoP refresh window, opens a same-route replacement, preserves connected and the transport generation, and keeps the old socket until expiry. Failed replacements retry while the token remains valid. Tests cover expiry closure, handoff, retry, cleanup, cached-token renewal, route learning, and refresh spacing. The reported test and live-check results support the required behavior.

Stop replacement loops for short-lived DPoP tokens.

When expiresAtEpochMs - now is no greater than DPOP_ACCESS_TOKEN_REFRESH_SKEW_MS, the current sleep is zero. Each successful handoff then calls replaceBeforeExpiry for the new lease, so short-lived tokens can cause immediate repeated handoffs, token renewals, and overlapping sockets.

Update the DPoP replacement flow around `untilExpiry` so tokens already within
`DPOP_ACCESS_TOKEN_REFRESH_SKEW_MS` do not trigger an immediate handoff. Return
`Effect.never` when the initial remaining lifetime is at or below the skew;
otherwise sleep for the remaining lifetime minus the skew.

Valid. The suggested guard covers tokens shorter than the skew, but a token slightly longer than it (61 s, say) would still hand off about once a second, each time leaving the previous socket open for 60 s. So f9825c3 spaces handoffs instead: after a handoff, the next one waits at least the skew. A renewed token too short for that ends its session at expiry, and the supervisor reconnects with backoff, as on main. The first handoff on a connection is unchanged, so a socket that opened on a cached token close to expiry is still renewed before the server closes it.

Two new tests use 30 s and 90 s tokens. On 4b92848 they fail with expected 132 to be 2 and expected 11 to be 6. With the change, supervisor.test.ts passes 66/66. The server issues 1-hour tokens today, so its handoffs don't change.

…part

A renewed token that is already inside the refresh skew was replaced at
once, and so was every token after it. A server issuing short tokens would
start a loop of renewals and overlapping sockets. After a handoff, the next
one now waits at least the skew; a token too short for that ends its
session at expiry and reconnects with backoff.

Bound replacement synchronization before token expiry.

RpcSessionFactory.connect limits only WebSocket opening to 15 seconds. After the socket opens, session.ready waits for initialConfig without the normal 75-second synchronization deadline. replaceBeforeExpiry wraps the entire call only with Effect.timeout(remainingMs), so a stalled initial configuration can consume the remaining token lifetime and prevent the retry loop from running.

Use a replacement-specific deadline that leaves time for a retry. Do not use the 15-second plus 75-second sum as the only bound: that 90-second budget exceeds the 60-second refresh window.

Note

Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, writing on behalf of @josephv123.

Right that a stalled replacement uses up the window with no retry. I'd still keep one attempt with the whole window, for two reasons:

  • A stall falls back to main's behavior. The server closes the old socket at expiry, and the normal reconnect runs with its own budget: 15 s to establish, plus 75 s to synchronize for each route that reaches synchronizing.
  • Splitting the window would cut off slow replacements that work. A replacement synchronizes the same initial config and snapshot as a normal connect, and the supervisor allows that up to 75 s. With an attempt bound to, say, half of the last minute, a 35 s synchronization would time out, and the retry would have even less time. That turns a slow handoff that would succeed into the drop this PR removes. A retry also only helps if the stall is in that one socket, not in the server or the route, and the first attempt gives no way to tell.

So I've left this as is. If you'd rather trade slow replacements for a retry, the change is one line, a smaller bound in Effect.timeout(remainingMs), and I can make it.
