Returning to a thread left following a streaming reply reaches the newest message after its completed reply loads and measures.

Problem

Follow a long reply in thread A, switch to B while it streams, wait for A to finish, then return. The reused list scrolls to an estimated end. A batch of newly loaded rows can then grow beyond LegendList's follow threshold, leaving the viewport above the end with no recovery button.

Change

Keep a followed list at the end during restoration and after changed rows land, until it remains at the end for six frames. Stop on user gestures or when follow is disabled, and cap the correction at 180 frames. Preserve reading positions, citation/turn anchors, and smooth streaming.

The growth correction requires changed rows and a retained end marker. A non-user scroll reporting an end gap preserves that marker while effective following is active; scroll states recorded while effective following is off still protect reading positions. Anchored readers who are away from the end retain their reading position when a reply settles. Explicit "Scroll to end" actions cancel an active correction before starting their smooth scroll.

Scope and approval

Fixes #22111. Filed after the maintainer requested a fresh report in #5903 (comment). Accepted as a bug in #22111 (comment).

Related: #12372. This fixes the reproduced viewport stranding, not every missing-button state. The pill guard is unchanged. Related #21626 addresses showing the wrong conversation while switching, not this layout-growth correction.

Verification

Real Linux development client through T3 Code's Browser panel, 1280 by 800 CSS pixels, dark Iris theme. Same two-thread sequence and prompt, with real streamed replies containing synthetic markdown, tables, code and diagrams. The responses differ; this is reproduction evidence, not a performance benchmark or a measured failure rate.

Earlier real-client checks passed two final-fix returns, upward navigation during streaming, and a mid-stream return. After the review correction, a real-client pill click emitted a smooth scroll without an immediate auto scroll.

At head 3fa05f4d95, the focused timeline browser and scroll-anchor suites pass all 109 tests. From apps/web, run vp test run src/components/chat/timelineScrollAnchoring.test.tsx src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx --project unit --project browser --maxWorkers=4. Changed-file lint, formatting and web typechecking pass. The tests ran on Node 24.22.0 with Playwright's pinned Chromium revision 1223. Ubuntu 26.04 is not officially supported by Playwright, so its Ubuntu 24.04 binary was used. The earlier real-client recordings were not repeated for this merge. A component regression for the original background-reply sequence could not distinguish the baseline, so it was discarded; the recordings establish that sequence. Browser regressions cover smooth-jump interruption and anchored reading positions when anchor clearing and changed rows arrive together or in either order. A controlled non-user scroll reports a real end gap while follow intent remains active, then adds a row. This strands the old assignment 2,722 px above the end and reaches within 2 px with the correction. Natural append and resize probes stayed pinned, so this establishes the callback-handling defect rather than its natural layout timing. The smooth-jump fixtures now await initial list positioning and move through the list API before asserting scroll state. The active-pin case verifies it is outside LegendList's maintenance threshold before growth, so built-in maintenance cannot satisfy the setup first. Disabling pin cancellation makes its unchanged no-auto-scroll assertion fail. This corrects a test setup race exposed by CI; no production code changed in that correction. Exact CI internal timing was not captured.

Web verified. Desktop shares this timeline but the packaged app was not run. Native mobile uses a separate feed. Providers and transport contracts are unchanged; relay/tunnel connections were not tested. No documentation or API changes.

Original implementation with Claude Sonnet 5.5 (Claude Code in T3 Code); review correction and final review with GPT-6.1 Sol (medium, Codex in T3 Code).

…tch back

Returning to a thread that was following its stream could leave the view
thousands of pixels above the end with no "Scroll to end" pill. The restore
scroll aims at estimated row heights, and a reply that finished while the
thread was in the background lands as a batch of rows taller than one
viewport. LegendList only keeps following when the view is already within
about a viewport of the end, so nothing scrolled again.

After the restore scroll, and when rows change on a followed thread that
ends up away from the end, the timeline now keeps scrolling to the end until
the layout has been quiet for a few frames. A user gesture or leaving follow
mode stops it. Streaming with smooth following, reading history and anchored
turns are unchanged.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused web timeline bug fix that keeps followed threads pinned after restored rows finish measuring, with bounded cancellation and extensive regression coverage; it introduces no schema, security, billing, or deployment changes. A separate unresolved Medium finding reports a race where delayed correction frames can interfere with an explicit smooth scroll and remains a correctness blocker.

When a working thread is restored at the end, streaming scroll may stutter because instant corrections interrupt smooth follow. The effect is limited and cosmetic, so it is a low-risk follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2a454

The change is confined to browser viewport behavior; no new data access or privileges were identified. Remaining uncertainty concerns cancellation when switching through an empty or loading conversation.

For comparison, I pushed an experimental alternative using LegendList's native end-follow behavior:

It changes maintainScrollAtEndThreshold from one viewport to Number.POSITIVE_INFINITY, while retaining ChatView's existing follow-intent gates. This version adds no effects or custom correction loop. Native data/layout/item-measurement callbacks handle following; user navigation must still disable follow through the existing ChatView handlers.

All 94 focused timeline/scroll-anchor tests, targeted lint/format checks, and web typechecking pass. Coverage includes restoration, manual reading-position preservation, smooth jumps, completed rows, and later row-height growth.

This is experimental. The small automated growth cases also pass with the old threshold, so they do not establish that this alternative fixes the original real-client reproduction. I have not repeated that reproduction or obtained an independent review for this branch. The current PR remains unchanged at 449f528; this branch is available if you prefer exploring the native approach.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the end-pin marker while follow intent remains active.

When row growth exceeds LegendList’s one-viewport maintenance threshold, the layout scroll can report isAtEnd === false while followsEnd remains active. The current assignment clears endPinWasAtEndRef, so the rows effect returns before pinTimelineToEnd. The followed thread can remain far above its newest message, while ChatView suppresses the scroll-to-bottom control for this same-generation state.

Do not gate this only on liveFollowEnabled. The anchored-reader test keeps liveFollowEnabled true while anchoredEndSpace makes followsEndRef.current false. Record the false state when follow intent is off, but preserve the marker for layout-driven false states while follow intent remains active.

Addressed the outside-diff finding in review #22113 (review) with commit 6b41d74.

A controlled browser regression uses the real timeline/list: after initial restoration, move the viewport back without a user-navigation event, deliver a scroll reporting an end gap while follow remains active, then append a row. With the exact old assignment, it remains 2,722 px above the end. With the correction, it returns within 2 px. The marker now retains true while effective followsEndRef is active and still records false when effective following is off, including anchored readers. The three anchor-settlement ordering regressions are unchanged and pass.

The final focused browser/scroll-anchor run passes 109/109 tests. Changed-file lint/format, web typechecking and the test assertion guard pass. One full run failed two existing smooth-jump tests; both passed unchanged in isolation and the next full run passed. Natural append and resize probes stayed pinned, so I have not reproduced the exact natural large-growth timing or repeated the full-client return sequence for this correction.

Fixed the Test Web failure from run 39460862038 in 3fa05f4 with a test-only correction.

The fixture waited for overflow, set DOM scrollTop, and assumed the next row update would make our active pin call scrollToEnd. LegendList can finish its own end maintenance before the pin tick. Forcing that valid ordering reproduces jumped=false without exercising cancellation. A passing trace instead had a 7,325 px gap when the growth correction ran. The CI log has no internal trace, so I cannot establish its exact ordering.

Both smooth-jump fixtures now await initial positioning and scroll through the list API. The active-pin case verifies a resolved end gap outside LegendList's maintenance threshold before adding rows. The original smooth-scroll and no-auto-scroll assertions remain. Disabling the production cancellation call makes the corrected active-pin test fail on the unexpected auto scroll, then restoring it passes.

The final focused timeline/scroll-anchor suites pass 109/109 tests, including anchored-reader and followed-growth regressions. Changed-file lint/format, web typecheck and the assertion guard pass. Production code, thresholds and timeouts are unchanged. Full Test Web and other remote checks must run on this head.
