Problem

Citation controls can leave the visible message area when selecting a long response or wide code line. Upward selections can also lose Cite when the drag ends outside the response, and scrolling dismisses the action even while text remains selected.

Fixes #22109.

Change

Keep both Cite and its comment editor inside the visible timeline above the composer. The controls share a bounded selection anchor, follow scrolling and resizing, and preserve the quoted text while the comment is edited. Clip a selection released outside the response to its originating message.

The shared popover exposes the existing Base UI boundary and sticky options. Web and desktop use this client code; no wire or provider changes are needed.

Scope and approval

#22109 is accepted for horizontal comment-popup overflow. The maintainer confirmed the off-screen anchor in this comment.

This broader proposal also changes intentional upstream behavior. #15818 hides Cite when the selection is fully off screen; this change keeps it clamped to the visible message area. It also clips selections released outside their originating response rather than rejecting cross-response selections. These additional behaviors have not received maintainer approval. The scope request and supporting evidence are at #22109 (comment).

Related PRs #22126 and #22149 both address the original horizontal-popup report. #22126 enables Base UI sticky positioning; #22149 clamps the last selection rectangle horizontally. Neither changes Cite, selection capture, or the selection-scroll observer. This proposal additionally bounds both controls above the composer and changes the scroll/selection behavior described above. This does not imply that the other PRs fail at their stated scope.

Verification

  • Real client with sample paragraphs and a wide code line: selected bottom to top and top to bottom, scrolled the selected response, opened Cite, typed a comment, and scrolled again. Both controls stayed inside the message area. Typing did not scroll the document sideways.
  • Integrated Chromium tests cover both directions, long replies, highlighted token spans, scrolling, typing, the header-crossing drag, and a shrinking message area when the composer expands.
  • Timer/frame regressions cover scrolling immediately after release or keyboard selection.

Claude Opus 5.5 completed two full reviews and a final review of the source-unmount cleanup in the original implementation, with no remaining code blockers.

The citation browser tests use real controls, native selections, and disposable fixtures. Native-event waits are bounded and remove their listeners even on failure. Timer/frame races use a fake clock and assert that Cite actually appears. The capture tests also verify which response owns the quote.

The six focused suites pass all 133 tests. The web typecheck and scoped formatting/lint checks pass. Four negative controls confirm the relevant tests fail when pending capture, popup boundaries, source-removal cleanup, or metadata-origin handling is broken. No retries or longer test timeouts were added.

The desktop shell and macOS-specific rendering were not re-tested; the integrated pass used the real shared web client on Linux.

Before screenshots supplied by the person reporting the desktop selection problem. The exact desktop build was not supplied:

Before: Cite overlaps the composer

Before: comment editor displaced below the message area

After frame from the recording:

After: comment editor stays inside the message area

After recording, 11.5 seconds covering both selection directions, a wide line, scrolling and typing:

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR materially changes the existing citation-selection workflow, including selection clipping semantics, scroll/resize persistence, and shared popover positioning across the chat UI. The behavior is well tested but spans several production components and is not limited to a small isolated layout correction.

📝 Walkthrough

Assistant citation selection now stays within its originating response. Citation controls reposition during scroll and resize. Comment popups use clamped anchors, collision boundaries, and sticky positioning.

Changes: Assistant citation positioning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define the citation source and boundary
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatCanvasContext.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatCanvas.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, apps/web/src/lib/assistantTextSelection.ts, apps/web/src/lib/assistantTextSelection.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantCitations.browser.test.tsx
The chat context exposes composer height, and the timeline passes a composer-adjusted boundary to the toolbar. Selection capture clips text to the originating assistant response. Tests cover selection across metadata and response boundaries.
Reposition the citation toolbar
apps/web/src/lib/selectionActions.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantSelectionToolbar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantCitations.browser.test.tsx
The toolbar uses boundary-aware anchors and repositions on scroll and resize. Browser tests cover source removal, interrupted selection, and dismissal.
Constrain the citation comment popup
apps/web/src/lib/assistantCitationPosition.ts, apps/web/src/components/ui/popover.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantCitationChip.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantCitations.browser.test.tsx
Citation anchor geometry is clamped to source and viewport bounds. Popovers accept collision boundaries and sticky positioning. Browser tests cover popup placement during scrolling and resizing.

The inspected changes remain within the citation interface and preserve source-bounded quoted text. No introduced security issue was established, but citation ownership during thread changes and message-element reuse is not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure change concerns when already-rendered assistant text remains actionable in the client, including while off screen. The inspected path does not demonstrate newly granted credential, tool, service, or cross-environment authority. Its effective ownership still depends on the timeline and citation consumer.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Cross-response drags do not concatenate arbitrary neighboring responses into one citation: capture selects an originating assistant source, requires viewport containment, and clamps both endpoints to that source. The visual collision boundary governs placement rather than acting as an authorization boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Thread-reference changes recreate the selection observer but do not synchronously clear the captured citation state. Similar state retention exists in the base, so this is not established as a newly introduced identity failure. Whether the parent rejects stale citations or remounts the owner, and whether same-node message reuse preserves identity, remain unresolved.

Explanation

Issue [#22109] requires the citation comment popover to remain inside the visible pane for wide code lines and to avoid horizontal layout shifts. assistantCitationAnchorRect selects a visible range rectangle and clamps the anchor to the viewport and source bounds. AssistantCitationChip passes the timeline boundary, enables sticky positioning, and supplies it as the collision boundary. The reported browser tests cover wide lines, selection directions, scrolling, typing, and resizing.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The active linked issue is [#22109]. The PR also changes behavior not required by that issue. captureAssistantTextSelection clips selections that leave the originating response. observeSelectionActions preserves and repositions actions during scrolling. The timeline boundary keeps Cite and the editor above the composer, and the PR keeps Cite for fully off-screen selections. The PR description states that these broader behaviors lack maintainer approval.

Resolution

Limit this PR to the [#22109] citation-popover positioning and horizontal-layout fix, or link active issues and obtain approval for the added selection clipping, scrolling, off-screen Cite, and composer-boundary behavior.

Thanks for this. #22149 landed a fix for the same bug (#22109): the quote comment box now stays on screen for long code lines. Closing this one so there is one fix for the issue.
