A scheduled run was recorded as succeeded as soon as its message was accepted, so a turn the provider rejected later (for example a usage limit) still showed succeeded. A dispatched run now stays running until its turn ends, then records succeeded or failed with the provider's error. The run count moves to the end of the run, so a restart that interrupts a run counts it once. The thread panel no longer disables Run now while a task is running, matching Settings and mobile. list_scheduled_tasks also returns lastRunError. 🟠 High scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.ts:916
If the turn ends during dispatch bookkeeping, the task keeps its old next_run_at, so an interval task can run again on the next poll and a manual run does not advance its schedule. trackedRuns.dispatched(messageId) exposes the run to recordRunEnd before markCompleted saves the new schedule; recordRunEnd then changes last_run_status, causing markCompleted's last_run_status = 'running' guard to reject the update. Buffer terminal outcomes until dispatch bookkeeping is persisted, or otherwise ensure the schedule update cannot be skipped.

Confirmed and fixed in 0e9db72. The tracker now only releases a held outcome after the dispatch bookkeeping (markCompleted or the webhook transaction) is saved, so an early end can no longer break the last_run_status='running' guard and skip next_run_at. I could not build a deterministic test that fails on the old ordering, so this is fixed structurally; the added test covers the held-outcome path in TrackedRuns.

A promoted scheduled message is recorded as failed with The run was cancelled. and removed from tracking even though its active run continues, so the active run’s eventual outcome is ignored. dispatchQueuedMessagePromoteToSteer emits this cancelled update before the message.updated reassignment; distinguish this transient cancellation from a terminal cancellation before settling the tracked run.

Confirmed and fixed in 0e9db72. Promote-to-steer emits run.updated(cancelled) before message.updated, so a cancel is now only treated as the end after confirmCancel reads the message's current run from the projection; if the message moved into another run, that run is followed instead. Added a service test with the real event order (it failed before) and TrackedRuns unit tests.

…rs and a dropped event stream - Persist the dispatch bookkeeping before an outcome can replace it, so a turn that ends right after dispatch still advances next_run_at. - A queued run cancelled only because its message was promoted into the active run no longer ends the task; the message's current run is checked first. - An outcome that cannot be saved is retried, then the run is released as failed instead of staying running. - The event listener resumes with a bounded backoff, catches up runs that ended meanwhile from the thread projection, and releases the rest as failed once retries are spent. If a run completes while the event stream is down,
streamDomainEventsresumes after the current latest sequence and does not replay that terminal event. If either catch-upgetThreadRecordscall then fails, this handler only logs the warning and leaves the run intrackedRuns.pending(). A healthy stream does not run catch-up again, so the task row can remainrunningand stay excluded from normal scheduling.Allow the failure to reach the existing stream retry, or retry the catch-up operation directly.

Re CodeRabbit review 5607602447, "Retry failed projection catch-up": "If getThreadRecords fails for a run whose terminal event fired while the stream was down, the run stays in trackedRuns.pending() and its row stays running. A healthy stream never runs catch-up again." Confirmed, fixed in 018dee7. I did not let the failure reach the stream retry, because one permanently unreadable thread would then make the listener resubscribe forever and hold up every other task. Instead the per-run catch-up read is retried 3 times with a short backoff; if it still fails, the run stops being tracked and its row is released as failed ("Could not read how the run ended."), the same release the persistence path uses. A thread deleted while the stream was down is not a read failure (the projection keeps it, flagged with deletedAt), so that case is now recorded as failed ("The thread was deleted."). Tests: an unreadable thread is released without extra resubscribes, and a deleted thread fails its run on catch-up; both time out on the previous code. Limit: a persistent read outage longer than the retry window marks a still-running run as failed. |
… read - Retry the projection read a few times, then release the run as failed and stop tracking it, so one unreadable thread neither leaves its row running nor makes the listener resubscribe forever. - Record a thread deleted while the stream was down as failed; deletion keeps the projection flagged rather than removing it. Problem
A scheduled run is recorded as
succeededas soon as T3 accepts its message, not when its turn ends. A provider rejection that lands later, such as a usage limit or an unknown model, fails the turn but the task still showssucceededwith no error. Agents readinglist_scheduled_tasksget the same wrong answer. Reproduced onmain: a task whose model the provider rejects showssucceededafter Run now, while its thread shows the provider error.Change
A dispatched run now stays
running(an existingScheduledTaskRunStatusvalue that every client already renders) until its turn ends. The service follows the run's events and recordssucceeded, orfailedwith the provider's error message. Interrupted, cancelled and rolled back runs recordfailedwith a short reason, and a run whose thread is deleted recordsfailed.TrackedRuns.tsfollows a run from the message id the dispatch stamps, so it works for fresh-thread launches and for runs queued behind another turn. It is registered before the dispatch because the run's events can arrive before the dispatch returns; an outcome that lands early is held until the dispatch bookkeeping is written.failedso the row never staysrunning. The event listener resumes forever with a capped backoff. It opens the stream before reading the thread projection to catch up runs that ended while it was down, so no event falls in the gap. A thread whose records cannot be read is retried a few times and then its run is released asfailed; a thread deleted while the stream was down is recorded asfailedtoo. The tracker is in memory only, so a restart is still handled by startup recovery, and provider error text is not recovered on catch-up (a failed run reads "The run failed."). A read outage that lasts longer than the catch-up retry window marks a run that is still going asfailed.running, so counting at dispatch as well would count a restart-interrupted run twice. A run replaced while stillrunningis counted when it is replaced.runningnow outlives the dispatch.running. Settings and mobile never did, and with this changerunninglasts the whole turn. This is the question Julius raised on fix(server): scheduled runs record the turn's real outcome #18213.list_scheduled_tasksreturns an optionallastRunError, so an agent can see why a run failed.Behavior to be aware of: a scheduled task is not started again while its previous turn is still running (the due-task poll already skipped
runningrows). Previously each tick queued another message behind the active turn.Built on the approach in #18213 by @Mnigos (closed by its author, not rejected). This is a separate implementation against current
main; it keeps the idea of following the run's events to its terminal state and adds the two review points raised there (an outcome arriving before the dispatch returns, and Run now staying available).Scope and approval
Fixes #17889 (bug, triaged by Julius; the triage proposes this approach). Retry or catch-up after a failed run is out of scope, as the triage notes it is a separate product decision.
