ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The production capture path now includes host-DOM probing, temporary overlay injection, serialized guest captures, rendering waits, cleanup, and new timeout behavior for screenshots and annotation crops. This is a substantive runtime change rather than a small mechanical fix, with cross-context lifecycle behavior that warrants closer review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Serialized capture and transformed preview handling apps/desktop/src/preview/PreviewCapture.ts |
Adds per-WebContents capture serialization. For transformed previews, the helper captures a frozen guest image, temporarily displays it while hiding the transformed guest, waits two animation frames, and captures the page. It attempts overlay cleanup with a one-second timeout. The overall operation has a five-second timeout. |
Manager capture integration and delayed-setup test apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.ts, apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.test.ts |
capturePageWithRetry uses the helper and wraps its errors as PreviewOperationError. The retry policy remains. The host mock detects the recording capture trigger, and the added test checks capture and cleanup after scaled-capture setup remains pending for two seconds. |

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 58bf6
A failed cleanup can leave a transformed preview covered until it is reset. This is a narrow but persistent failure; retry or otherwise recover cleanup before merging if that risk is unacceptable.
Security Architecture Review
-
-
Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to
58bf6The change is confined to desktop preview capture, with existing guest-identity checks preserved. Failed cleanup could leave a scaled preview frozen or non-interactive, and interruption recovery is not fully verified. No privilege expansion was identified in the inspected flow.
Retained concerns
- Low · reliability · inferred: If token-specific removal fails or times out while the overlay remains installed, the helper ignores that failure and can complete without restoring the live preview. Its frozen image and hiding style can therefore outlive the capture operation. This is an introduced preview-state rollback risk, not a verified privilege or data-exposure vulnerability.
-
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The identified rollback risk concerns the selected preview's visible host-DOM state. The inspected capture path operates on that guest and writes screenshots to the existing artifact directory; it does not establish a broader service, credential, or tenant attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Guest-controlled visual content reaches the host as a captured image assigned to an img source, not as HTML or executable page text. Dynamic strings are JSON-encoded, selector values use CSS.escape, and guest identity is checked before overlay installation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred — The finalizer and disconnected-holder guard provide meaningful cleanup protection, but swallowed removal failures leave restoration unconfirmed. The new test verifies successful delayed setup and that removal was requested; its mocked JavaScript does not demonstrate actual host-DOM recovery after interruption or timeout.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Consider an idempotent, token-specific recovery path for failed removal rather than treating cleanup as complete. Validate interruption, delayed native setup, and restoration failure with a committed Electron regression scenario.

Explanation
The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, verification, UI evidence, and agent usage. However, the Scope and approval section does not provide maintainer approval, a triaged issue, or the required rationale for treating this as an obvious-bug exemption. The reported test count also conflicts with the PR objectives.

Retry overlay cleanup while the host remains alive.
If the live host's executeJavaScript cleanup call rejects or exceeds the one-second timeout, Effect.ignore suppresses the failure. The holder and its opacity: 0 !important style can then remain, leaving the preview covered and the guest hidden. capturePageWithRetry cannot recover this case because the cleanup failure is not propagated.

Problem
Chromium rasterizes a CSS-scaled preview at its displayed size, so
preview_snapshot, saved screenshots, and annotation crops lose text and 1 px detail in narrow sidebars and mini previews, even though the page viewport and PNG dimensions stay the same (#9872).Change
A shared
capturePreviewPagehelper inapps/desktop/src/preview/PreviewCapture.tsserializes captures per guest. When the host webview is CSS-scaled, it briefly overlays a frozen frame of the preview, removes the transform for the realcapturePage, and always removes the overlay on success, failure, or interruption. Unscaled previews capture as before.Manager.tsroutes snapshot/screenshot and annotation captures through the helper. Scaled attempts have a five-second budget for queueing, overlay setup, and both captures; unscaled captures retain their one-second timeout. Existing retries and stale-guest checks are preserved. Main’s newer full-page annotation capture and device-scale cropping are retained. The page viewport is never changed.Scope and approval
Fixes #9872. The issue is not yet maintainer-triaged; two other users confirmed the same detail loss on Linux in the issue thread.
Verification
Original repro on Linux with Electron 43.4.1 at 2x device scale: narrow and mini captures differed from the wide preview. After the fix, their pixels matched it byte-for-byte at 100% and 125% zoom. A one-off native Electron smoke script (run locally, not committed, since it is not wired into any check) covered concurrent captures, failure and cancellation cleanup, annotation crops, and background DOM updates, and writes before/after PNGs to the printed temporary directory.
Current main merge verification:
Manager.test.ts: 102 passed, including scaled setup taking more than one second and existing timeout/cropping coverage.vpexecutable to avoid duplicate Vitest suite instances. No dependency/config changes are committed.Native Electron rendering was not rechecked during this maintenance pass. Existing before/after evidence follows.
