The assistant previously replaced the conversation with artifact pages, kept voice configuration in the composer toolbar, and used competing headers and inconsistent content typography. This draft introduces a document-first workbench: a 480px dock can temporarily expand, and Artifacts shows a companion conversation beside the editable result when the panel has enough width.

Scope

• Preserve mounted Chat and Artifact owners across width changes; retain drafts, selection, detached reading position, edit mode and version guards.
• Use one guarded parent return, local to the artifact in split mode and in the compact shell otherwise. Keep shell commands restrained and targets usable on touch.
• Align conversation/artifact prose, shared table/code presentation and command hierarchy. Preserve raw code, selection, scroll and asynchronous clipboard ownership.
• Move language and persistent privacy guidance into named Voice options, keeping recording feedback and Cancel reachable. Add keyboard entry into the portaled field.
• Carry the upstream r-select open-state correction in the existing ranui dependency patch; retain the pinned dependency graph otherwise.
• Update the application design contract and task walkthrough acceptance, including clear context/destinations and distinct save, refinement and document-review outcomes.

Verification and current status

Draft — final product acceptance is pending. Component foundation work in ran is the current priority before further Document refinement.

• Fresh focused snapshot run: 66 tests across resize, companion navigation, workspace memory, speech, task staging and context passed.
• Typecheck/lint and formatting checks passed; independent review identified and corrected expansion-cap, Back-focus relocation and coarse-header cascade issues in source.
• Earlier actual-editor development runs demonstrated retained drafts/edit/reading state in split mode, four-format historical reader restoration, and geometry mutation rejection. They are interim evidence, not final production visual acceptance.
• The broad development browser pass was interrupted while source was changing and is not reported as passing. Rerun the full affected browser matrix against a frozen production build after the ran component work; verify reverse/exit Tab traversal and record/review fresh screenshots and continuous interactions.
• Human usability testing and human visual acceptance have not been performed. No merge or package publication.

Closing: draft redesign with failing Lint and E2E checks, not ready to merge. The branch codex/assistant-navigation-density is kept and the PR can be reopened when the work resumes.
