ci(macos): the shipped arm64 binary was compiled by an LLVM whose loop vectorizer ignores the no-alias promise, at a minimum macOS nothing pinned - #246
Conversation
…p vectorizer ignores the no-alias promise, at a minimum macOS nothing pinned The macos-arm64 release leg and every macOS CI leg built with Xcode 16.2 on macos-14. Its AppleClang 16 is LLVM 17, whose loop vectorizer never reads __builtin_assume_separate_storage (llvm/llvm-project#64666, fixed in LLVM 18 by #76770; CI showed noaliascheck arm 6 at plain on PR #200). A VERIFY_NO_ALIAS_BUF promise therefore kept every vectorized loop's runtime overlap check in the binary users download. The leg also never pinned a deployment target: clang took the runner's macOS, 14.0 on macos-14, and a runner move alone would have shipped 26.x. And macos-14 is deprecated, with October brownouts and retirement on 2026-11-02 (actions/runner-images#13518). The fix: - release.yml macos-arm64: macos-26 with Xcode 26.6 (17F113, Apple clang 21.0.0, the image default); deployment_target "14.0" is exported as MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET before the PGO build and read back off build/ripwire with otool after PGO staging, before Package. A new step records xcodebuild, c++ and llvm-profdata and fails if llvm-profdata is not under DEVELOPER_DIR, so the profile is written, merged and consumed by one LLVM. - ci.yml: the eight gate shards and the asan macOS leg run macos-26, DEVELOPER_DIR Xcode 26.6 and MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET 14.0 -- the toolchain the release ships. asan's ASAN_OPTIONS condition moved with them (left on macos-14 it hands the macOS leg detect_leaks=1). Plain/Release split, four shards and the plain skiplist unchanged. - Comments naming Xcode 16.2 / macos-14 as the current toolchain now say "through 0.6.1" (CMakeLists.txt, PortableFlags.cmake, CONTRIBUTING.md, portablebuildcheck.sh, one optremarkscheck skip message). Evidence, measured on the dev machine's Xcode 26.6 build 17F113 (the same build the macos-26 image lists): - Minimum macOS: v0.6.1's published ripwire-0.6.1-macos-arm64 (sha256 verified, read not executed): otool LC_BUILD_VERSION minos 14.0, sdk 15.2. - Loop vectorizer, no extra flag (-O2 -mcpu=apple-m1 -mmacosx-version-min=14.0, objdump): d[i] += 3*s[i] over two uint32_t* is 64 instructions plain, 57 with the builtin, 64 again with -mllvm -basic-aa-separate-storage=false. Under -vectorize-memory-check-threshold=0 the plain loop reports AnalysisAliasing/CantReorderMemOps and the promised one Passed/Vectorized. noaliascheck: CONSUMED_DEFAULT, LOOP_CONSUMED (axpyBuiltin 61 vs plain 65), ALL PASS. - <print> at 14.0: a TU that #errors without __cpp_lib_print compiles and runs at -mmacosx-version-min=14.0 (minos 14.0, sdk 26.5); the 13.0 control hits the #error. - Release emulation: scripts/pgobuild.sh --cmake-extra -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release at MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=14.0, rc=0 in 185 s; PGO determinism diff identical, emit=std::print, minos 14.0, xmllint clean, output byte-identical to the plain build on test/fixture, the repo map and a --for query. Gate first: test/portablebuildcheck.sh #2i, twelve rows (text-level, any host) -- the leg's exact runner, Xcode and quoted "14.0"; the export before the first configure with no -D override; the otool step between staging and Package; DEVELOPER_DIR wiring; and ci.yml's macOS runner labels, matrix.os conditions, Xcode paths and deployment targets equal to the release's. Two controls mutate a copy (release.yml without the minos step; ci.yml's ASAN_OPTIONS back on macos-14), cmp it, and require a refusal by name. Red on 6fcae7b (gate added, workflows unchanged): 11 FAIL, 1 PASS. ALL PASS after (31 rows in the gate). Ten further ad hoc mutations each reddened their own row. Also green locally: releaseinstallcheck 55, versioncheck 12, manifestcheck 16, gateexitcheck 22 (skip=1, arm E), headbinstagecheck 26, pargatescheck 64, optremarkscheck 30, noaliascheck, docdemotecheck, deckcheck, readmedriftcheck, commentcoherencecheck, ripwirepubliccheck; gatecount_build --check and limits_build --check; det diff and xmllint on test/fixture. actionlint's three cmake_extra findings are pre-existing on 6fcae7b; this change adds none. …t-target pin, its minos read-back and the toolchain record --quality-delta=6fcae7bc..35f2a1b gated on one row: verbosity of release.yml's `build` job, 138 -> 175 lines. The growth is the change itself: the MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET export, the otool minos read-back and the Xcode/llvm-profdata record step, each with the rationale comment house style asks for. The first two are the steps the macos-x64 leg carried through 0.6.1. Acked through the binary with --ack-only=gating: exactly one +ack row, keyed to that finding. The four minor verbosity rows (ci.yml jobs/release/asan, release.yml jobs) stay unacked and visible. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…instead of failing it Review of 35f2a1b against the fail-loudly rule found four places where a missing pin degraded silently: - release.yml's export and minos steps ran `if: matrix.deployment_target`, so a macOS leg without the key skipped both and shipped at the runner's macOS. Both now run on every macOS leg; the export step FAILS on an empty deployment_target. - The minos read-back used `grep -E "minos 14.0"`, where the dot matches any byte. It is now an exact string compare of otool's minos against the pin, which also fails on a missing or doubled LC_BUILD_VERSION. - The toolchain record step matched llvm-profdata's path against "$DEVELOPER_DIR"/*, which an EMPTY DEVELOPER_DIR turns into "/*" -- any absolute path passed. An empty DEVELOPER_DIR now fails, and clang++ is held to the same prefix as llvm-profdata. xcrun failing to find either tool is a named error. - ci.yml's `matrix.os == 'macos-26' && ... || ''` falls back to an empty DEVELOPER_DIR and deployment target on any other label. The build matrix's front-end step and the asan macOS configure now fail when either is empty or CMakeCache.txt's CMAKE_OSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET is not the exported value. portablebuildcheck #2i accepts `runner.os == 'macOS'` as a firing condition and matches the exact-compare minos step. Its two controls now report each way they can fail by name: a mutation writer that crashed, a copy that was not written, a copy that did not change, a verdict that never finished, and a verdict whose FAILs are not exactly the one targeted row. Before, a crashed writer or verdict read as "was NOT refused". Each branch was exercised against a stub verdict: two FAILs, a crash, the wrong row, a missing copy, and the good case. Red on 6fcae7b (git archive + this gate): 11 FAIL, 1 PASS, unchanged. ALL PASS here. The minos step's `if:` set to Linux and the export step's `if:` set to Linux each redden their own row. actionlint (with shellcheck) reports only the three cmake_extra findings pre-existing on 6fcae7b. …ail-loudly guards f3fd03c's guards grew release.yml's `build` job from the acked 175 lines to 192: the empty-pin refusal in the export step, the exact-compare minos read-back, and the clang++/llvm-profdata prefix loop. The growth passed the acked size, so --quality-delta=a55b118e..HEAD gated again on that one finding. Re-acked through the binary with --ack-only=gating. The ledger row for key a92c1b3a424113ab is rewritten in place (175 -> 192, with a new reason that keeps the prior one); no row is added or removed. The four minor verbosity rows on the ci.yml and release.yml job keys stay unacked and visible. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…efore the fail-loudly guards f3fd03c made the release record step refuse an empty DEVELOPER_DIR and hold clang++ as well as llvm-profdata to the pinned Xcode, and made every macOS leg fail, never skip, when its pin is missing. The entry said only that llvm-profdata was checked. It now says what the checks do. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…g defines, so actionlint reported three errors on main #240 removed macos-x64, the only release leg that set cmake_extra. It kept the non-PGO configure's `${{ matrix.cmake_extra || '' }}` tail and the PGO step's conditional `${{ matrix.cmake_extra && format('--cmake-extra {0}', matrix.cmake_extra) || '' }}`. With no leg defining the key, actionlint reads both as undefined properties: `property "cmake_extra" is not defined`, three times, at release.yml's two command lines. Both expressions evaluated to the empty string on every remaining leg. Removing them leaves the commands the legs actually ran: `cmake -S . -B build -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release` on linux-x64/linux-arm64 and `scripts/pgobuild.sh --cmake-extra -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release` on macos-arm64. pgobuild.sh's own repeatable --cmake-extra option is untouched; a leg that needs extra configure flags can pass them there again. actionlint (with shellcheck over the run: blocks): release.yml 3 errors -> 0, ci.yml 0. portablebuildcheck and releaseinstallcheck ALL PASS. … locale, and 27 gate sites compared its order with byte order On #246's first run (35130688947, head d7541a6) scroundtripcheck (B) went red on both macos-26 shards: "cppqualfix: composed ids differ from the pre-change id= set". The ids were right. The gate sorted its expected list with /usr/bin/sort and cmp'd it against Python sorted(). macOS 26's sort (2.3-Apple) under the runner's en_US.UTF-8 collates case-insensitively, putting qual.cpp::a::twoSeg before qual.cpp::Box::get. macOS 14's sort and the Linux legs use byte order. The local tool shell has no LANG, so the gate passed here. Reproduced with the unchanged gate on the d7541a6 binary: LC_ALL=C ALL PASS, LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 FAIL "1,5d0 < qual.cpp::a::scopedTmpl < qual.cpp::a::twoSeg ...", the row CI printed. The same class, swept across every sort/comm/join/uniq/ls call in test/, test/lib/, scripts/ and bench/ (296 unpinned sites classified; SAFE means both sides use the same sort in the same run, a count, a membership test or display only). Every site that compares a collation order with something ordered differently now runs under LC_ALL=C, the house spelling (clieditcheck, gatecountcheck, kotlincheck): - vs Python sorted(): scroundtripcheck:93 (the red one), columnarcheck:60, grepanchorcheck:110, grepignorecheck:106,109 - comm over Python-sorted or LC_ALL=C-sorted input: mcpforparitycheck:121,124,268, prbudgetcheck:167 - vs a literal: candheadcheck:72,111, prcheck:44, reachcheck:67,74, elixirnamearitycheck:273, exercisescheck:46, ariseshimcheck:46, layerquerycheck:49, affectedcheck:79, cochangecliocheck:297, fieldaffinitycheck:133 - vs ripwire's byte-sorted ack writer: qualitysignalcheck:383 - a pick by position: showcasecapturecheck:352 (tail -1 chooses the capture the arms judge) - a pinned hash over sorted names: bench/representative_perfgate.sh:32 (hash unchanged in both locales) - comm over unsorted git status: shapingflagcheck:82,501 now LC_ALL=C sort, :502 LC_ALL=C comm 27 sites in 20 files. Only scroundtripcheck fails today. The other 26 pass under en_US.UTF-8 by luck of their current names (columnarcheck and mcpforparitycheck checked with the pre-fix copies: ALL PASS in both locales). Every fixed gate, run as its own script on the d7541a6 binary, is ALL PASS under both LC_ALL=C and LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8. No gate row, pin or expected value changed. …lent-skip `if:` through, and pinned none of the fail-loudly guards Independent review of d7541a6 (and CodeRabbit on the override): - F2: the override scan read only the matrix leg, so `--cmake-extra -DCMAKE_OSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=15.0` on the pgobuild step passed #2i. The only thing left to catch it was the otool step, which runs at tag time. #2i now scans the leg AND the build job's env and steps for -DCMAKE_OSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET, -mmacosx-version-min, and any MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET other than the export step's. A third control plants the step-level -D and must be refused by that row alone. - F3: #2i still counted `if: ${{ matrix.deployment_target }}` as a step that always runs. That is the silent skip f3fd03c removed. Only an absent `if:` or `runner.os == 'macOS'` counts now. - F4: none of the fail-loudly guards were pinned. #2i now asserts the export's empty-target refusal, the exact fail-closed minos compare, the toolchain record step ahead of the first build (empty DEVELOPER_DIR refusal, pwd -P, outside-prefix exit 1), and ci.yml's two CMakeCache.txt guards (build/ and asan/). - F5: the record step compared xcrun's paths with DEVELOPER_DIR as spelled. Both sides are now physical paths (`pwd -P`), so a symlinked Xcode neither passes nor fails by spelling. Run locally under bash -e: the real Xcode and a symlink to it rc=0; an empty, missing or CommandLineTools DEVELOPER_DIR rc=1; a shimmed xcrun answering /usr/bin/clang++ gives rc=1 "outside DEVELOPER_DIR". - F7: src/infra/charconvcompat.h and src/main.cpp said the fallback is proven by "the macos-14 CI leg". They now say the macOS CI legs build at 14.0, below the macOS 26 where libc++'s floating-point from_chars becomes available (comments only). #2i is 16 rows now: 13 verdicts and 3 controls, each control refused by exactly its own row. Thirteen ad hoc mutations each redden exactly one row: - export `if: matrix.deployment_target` - record step deleted, or moved after the PGO build - the empty-target guard deleted - the minos compare neutered to `= '99.0'`, or reverted to the regex grep - step env `MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET: "15.0"` - `-mmacosx-version-min=15.0` on the configure - inline `MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=15.0 scripts/pgobuild.sh` - `pwd -P` removed - the empty-DEVELOPER_DIR guard deleted - either ci.yml cache guard deleted Red on 6fcae7b (git archive plus this gate): 14 FAIL, 2 PASS. portablebuildcheck ALL PASS (35). CHANGELOG: the entry now follows main's #240 entry under [Unreleased], counts the new rows, and records the sort-locale defect. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…obs key at 276 after the pwd -P guard 4f679ed's physical-path check grew release.yml's `build` job from the acked 192 lines to 196, and the `jobs` key that holds it from 218 to 276, past that ledger row's acked 216 lines. --quality-delta over a55b118..HEAD gated on both. Both are the release guards #2i pins. They were re-acked through the binary with --ack-only=gating, which rewrote rows a92c1b3a424113ab (192 -> 196) and e419c663ed6ad8b5 (216 -> 276) in place, keeping each prior reason; no row was added. The three minor verbosity rows on ci.yml's jobs, release and asan keys stay unacked and visible. Result: regressions=3, minor=3, acked=2, gating=0. The defect
The
macos-arm64release asset and every macOS CI leg were built with Xcode 16.2 onmacos-14. That Xcode's AppleClang 16 is LLVM 17. LLVM 17's loop vectorizer never reads__builtin_assume_separate_storage: llvm/llvm-project#64666, fixed by #76770 in LLVM 18. CI showed this on PR #200, wherenoaliascheckarm 6 stayed at plain onmacos-14. So aVERIFY_NO_ALIAS_BUFpromise in the shipped macOS binary removed scalar reloads, but every vectorized loop kept its runtime overlap check and its scalar fallback. The ASSUME survey counted 27 loops that become check-free on Apple clang 21. None of them could become check-free in the binary users download. Two further problems:
otoolminos check only ever applied to the x64 leg. clang takes the lower of the runner's macOS and the SDK default. That gave 14.0 onmacos-14, but a plain runner move would give 26.x and drop macOS 14 and 15 users without a word.macos-14is deprecated. [macOS] macOS 14 Sonoma retirement: GitHub Actions and ADO arm64 on November 2; ADO Intel on November 23 actions/runner-images#13518 schedules brownouts on eight October dates and retirement on 2026-11-02. release.yml'sbuildjob (138 to 196 lines) and itsjobskey (218 to 276). Both are acked through the binary (--ack-only=gating), and each ledger row was rewritten in place with its prior reason kept. Three minor verbosity rows on ci.yml's job keys stay visible. The full suite was not run locally. CI carries it, and the macOS legs are what this PR changes.
Risks worth watching on the first CI run
macos-26is the same free arm64 pool class asmacos-14, and 0.6.1's macos-x64 release leg already ran there. The starvation trap still applies: nine macOS jobs per run, and a TIMEOUT on a macOS shard is read againstxmlwellformed's runner-speed probe, not taken as a code signal.strkerncheckprobes Rosetta 2 for AVX2. Onmacos-14it readrosetta_no_avx2and ran the x86-64 baseline slice. macOS 26's Rosetta runs the x86-64-v3 slice, as the dev machine and the 0.6.1 x64 leg did, so the macOS CI legs now execute the v3 slice under translation. That path was never exercised on amacos-14runner.Pins moved: none.
