Harden skills/install.sh with the installer list from #293 (thanks @s0undt3ch)

@s0undt3ch's #293 proposed moving skill and hook installation into the binary. We decided on 10-07 to keep it a script, but the review of that PR produced the clearest list we have of how an installer gets talked into writing or deleting the wrong thing. This PR ports the items that apply to a shell script. @s0undt3ch is co-author on every commit.

What changes:

  • A relative or empty HOME, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, AGENTS_HOME, CODEX_HOME or HERMES_HOME is refused with status 2. An explicit destination argument still resolves against the current directory. Windows drive and UNC forms still count as absolute (on POSIX that also means a root spelled x:/y is taken as absolute; a known gap, pinned by the Windows arms).
  • Nothing the installer creates is group- or world-writable. The umask is only tightened. A first-time settings.json or hooks.json is still created 0600, and an existing file keeps its mode (CWE-732).
  • A symlinked settings.json or hooks.json is written through (relative links resolve from the link's own directory) and the link kept. The temp file sits beside the target, so the rename is atomic.
  • The hook command is quoted when its path needs it, so a checkout under a path with a space gets a hook that runs. Re-runs, ripwire --doctor --agent=claude|codex (a small fix in src/codexdoctor.h) and the hook-removal step in INSTALL.md all read the quoted form. A path holding a single quote is refused. Upgrading a space-path install from main leaves main's old unquoted entries beside the new quoted ones; neither --doctor nor the hook-removal step handles those, so remove them by hand.
  • jq is found only through absolute PATH entries (CWE-426).
  • Temp files are removed on a normal exit and on HUP, INT and TERM. A SIGKILL cannot be trapped and can leave one .tmp.* file beside the file being written.
  • The prune removes only a symlink the previous manifest recorded (compared as a literal line), a dangling one, or one into this checkout (whole path components, never through a ..). A user's live link or regular file is kept and reported, including a regular file at a shipped skill's name.

What is not carried, and why:

  • Store verification and lstat of store keys: there is no store here, because skills link to the checkout.
  • Release-archive binary lookup: this script never needs the binary.
  • Windows copy fallback and link-failure reporting: already here from Windows x64 preview (0.6.3): please test #334 (a link loop at a shipped name is repaired, and a failed link plus failed copy prints FAILED with status 1).
  • Embedding skills and hooks in the binary stays declined, as decided on 10-07.

Known and left as they are, both also on main:

  • --doctor says ok=1 for an unquoted hook on a path with a space, though that hook exits 127.
  • The hook-removal step in INSTALL.md replaces a symlinked settings.json with a regular file and widens 0600 to 0644.

Small items a review found and left, none a regression from main:

  • A FIFO at a shipped skill's name is replaced by the install, though the prune keeps that shape.
  • "Compared as a literal line" has one exception: a user's link whose name contains a newline can match a manifest line, and only the link is removed, not its target.
  • A " in the checkout path gives a --doctor false alarm whose hint cannot clear.
  • --doctor says claude-skills ok=1 when a kept user file sits at a shipped skill's name; the installer prints kept once, at install.
  • On bash 3.2 an unset HOME exits 2 with the shell's own unbound variable text rather than the friendly one; no test runs that case.
  • changelog.d/install-hardening.md and a comment in skills/install.sh say sections (J)-(Q), and another comment there still describes ln -sfn unlinking a regular file; the sections run to (R).

Tests: test/skillinstallcheck.sh sections (J)-(R), the new ones red against the previous script, plus test/codexdoctorcheck.sh for the quoted form. Windows behaviour is unchanged.

Closes the hardening promise in #293.

…ritable (hardening from #293)

Two items from the #293 review rounds (@s0undt3ch), ported to the shell installer:
- a relative or empty HOME / CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR / AGENTS_HOME / CODEX_HOME / HERMES_HOME is refused with status 2
instead of installing relative to the current directory (an empty HOME meant /.claude); Windows drive paths still
count as absolute and an explicit destination argument is untouched.
- the umask is only tightened (OR 022), so umask 000 no longer yields 0777 directories or a 0666 settings.json.
Gate: test/skillinstallcheck.sh sections (J) and (K), red against the previous script.

…mand (hardening from #293)

Two items from the #293 review rounds (@s0undt3ch), ported to the shell installer:
- jq is found only through absolute PATH entries (CWE-426): an empty or relative entry no longer runs a jq planted in
  the current directory.
- the registered hook command is single-quoted when its path needs it (a checkout under a path with a space gave a
hook that could not run and a second run doubled the entries); an ordinary path is registered byte-for-byte as
before, the entry is recognised again on re-run, and a path holding a single quote is refused.
Gate: test/skillinstallcheck.sh sections (O) and (M), red against the previous script.

…y, mode kept; temp files cleaned (hardening from #293)

Items from the #293 review rounds (@s0undt3ch), ported to the shell installer:
- a symlinked settings.json / hooks.json (a dotfiles setup) is written through and the link kept; before, the rename
replaced the link with a regular file and the dotfiles copy never got the hook.
- the temp file is built beside the target (an atomic rename, not a copy across filesystems) and starts from the
  target's mode, so a 0640 config stays 0640 (CWE-732; mktemp alone forced 0600).
- every temp file is removed on any exit and on HUP/INT/TERM, so a killed run leaves none behind.
Gate: test/skillinstallcheck.sh sections (L) and (P), red against the previous script.

…(hardening from #293)

Items from the #293 review rounds (@s0undt3ch), ported to the shell installer: a stale ripwire-* entry is pruned only
if it is a symlink the previous manifest recorded, a dangling one, or one pointing into this checkout (compared by
whole path components, never a string prefix). A live symlink of the user's own that happens to be named ripwire-*,
and a regular file with such a name, are kept and reported instead of deleted.
Gate: test/skillinstallcheck.sh section (Q), red against the previous script.

…es (gateexitcheck G2)

The one-line '[ ... ] && ok ... || no ...' form prints FAIL for an arm that passed when the PASS line cannot be written;
gateexitcheck (G2) rejects it. Same arm, same assertion, wrapped like the others.

…at the root sites (claudeconfigdircheck census)

abs_root now takes the root exactly as before (${VAR:-$HOME/.sub}) plus the override's own value, so the census gate's
semantic revert still exposes all 11 sites. The (J) arms grep for the offending value in the refusal message.

…the quotes (hardening from #293)

skills/install.sh now single-quotes a hook path that needs it, so --doctor --agent=claude|codex cut the command at
" --" and looked up a path that still held the quotes: a hook that runs was reported broken and the repair hint could
never clear the row. everyCommandExecutable takes the text up to the closing quote when the command starts with one;
an unterminated quote names nothing. codexdoctorcheck gains arms for the quoted-ok, quoted-missing, unterminated and
Claude-row cases.

…e-safe temp cleanup, owner-only first-time config, literal manifest names (hardening from #293)

Round-1 review of the lane:
- F2: INSTALL.md's documented hook strip read the command's first word with split(" ")[0], so a hook the installer
registers from a path with a space could not be removed; it now reads the quoted form.
- F3: a user's regular file at a shipped skill's name was rm -f'd and replaced; it is kept and reported, like a foreign
  directory ("refuse foreign files", #293).
- F4: the temp cleanup split a newline-separated list and rm -f'd each piece, so a root holding a newline could delete
another file; there are at most two live temps, so they are two variables and no list.
- A first-time settings.json / hooks.json is created 0600 again (the lane's echo made it 0644 under umask 022).
- The prune compares a manifest name with grep -qxF (literal, not a regex) and refuses a link whose target climbs out
  of the checkout through "..".
- The temp-file comment, header and fragment no longer claim cleanup on SIGKILL, which no script can trap.
Arms: each fix red-first against the previous script; new arms also pin the mutants the review found surviving
(the command -v jq fallback, a dangling link outside the checkout, group-writable under umask 000, UNC and relative
HOME in every mode, a symlinked Codex hooks.json, a relative settings.json link).

…r and the SIGKILL limit (hardening from #293)

Says which #293 items have no counterpart in a script (store checks), which do not apply (release-archive lookup), and
which were already here (Windows copy fallback and link-failure reporting from #334; a link loop at a shipped name is
repaired); the quoted hook is read by --doctor and the documented removal; the temp cleanup covers a normal exit and
HUP, INT and TERM, not SIGKILL. Thanks @s0undt3ch.

Walkthrough

The installer now validates configured roots, protects configuration writes, and limits pruning to verified installer-owned entries. Hook registration, doctor checks, and uninstall filtering now handle quoted command paths.

Changes: Installer hardening

Layer / File(s) Summary
Destination validation and configuration writes
skills/install.sh, test/skillinstallcheck.sh, changelog.d/install-hardening.md
The installer validates environment-derived roots, searches only absolute PATH entries for jq, and uses tracked adjacent temporary files for configuration updates. Tests cover root validation, file permissions, jq lookup, symlink merges, temporary-file cleanup, and newline-containing roots.
Skill destination and pruning behavior
skills/install.sh, test/skillinstallcheck.sh
The installer preserves regular files and unverified symlinks at skill destinations. Pruning removes only symlinks identified as installer-owned.
Quoted hook commands and removal
skills/install.sh, src/codexdoctor.h, test/codexdoctorcheck.sh, test/skillinstallcheck.sh, INSTALL.md
Hook registration and doctor checks handle quoted paths, including paths with spaces. The uninstall filter recognizes quoted Ripwire hook commands. Tests cover invalid paths and confirm that removal retains user hooks.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: s0undt3ch, barefootski, quaterniondrift

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 9b3ba

The installer hardening looks sound. Two small gaps remain: the doctor check can report a hand-edited, malformed quoted hook command as healthy, and the signal-cleanup test could pass without testing the cleanup. Both are quick fixes and neither blocks merging.

Text glued to the closing quote ('path'bad) is one shell word, path plus bad, not the script. The doctor
now accepts a quoted command only when the closing quote ends the command or is followed by a space.
test/codexdoctorcheck.sh gains the glued arm (red on the previous binary) and a well-formed twin.

…sent and finds mktemp on PATH (CodeRabbit 4430258803)

The mv shim leaves a marker before it signals and the arm requires it, so a run that fails earlier
(a mktemp shim exec'ing a fixed /usr/bin/mktemp on a host without it) no longer passes the arm. The mktemp
shim resolves the real tool with command -v. Red check: with the mktemp shim pointed at a missing path the
previous arm passed twice; this one fails with killed=NO.

CodeRabbit reviewed head 9b3ba1b and posted two inline comments (both Minor); the review body lists nothing else. Both were checked against the code and both are real. Fixes are on top of 9b3ba1b:

  • 93d73bb codexdoctor: a quoted hook command followed by glued text ('path'bad) is no longer read as the script (comment 4430258800). New arm in test/codexdoctorcheck.sh, red on the previous binary.
  • 9240910 test/skillinstallcheck.sh: the (P) SIGTERM arm requires a marker from the mv shim and finds mktemp with command -v (comment 4430258803). With the mktemp shim broken the previous arm passed, the new one fails.
