Fixes #1199.

An opaque CONNECT tunnel recorded one session event, its open, and never a response. Its abctl row therefore had no STATUS or DURATION, so a tunnel that worked looked the same as one that was hung. A CONNECT whose upstream dial failed got a 502 and recorded nothing at all.

What abctl shows now

These are real events from an authbridge-proxy built from this branch, rendered by this branch's abctl with BYTES switched on, shown here with TIME, DIR, METHOD, TOKENS and COST removed for width. The three rows are a curl -p fetch through an opaque tunnel, a CONNECT to a closed port, and a tunnel held open for about 1.5s:

 # PHASE ACTION PLUGIN STATUS DURATION BYTES HOST
 1 req tunnel bridge-disabled 127.0.0.1:47720
 1 resp tunnel bridge-disabled 200 5ms ↑86 ↓26.9k 127.0.0.1:47720
 2 req tunnel dial-failed 127.0.0.1:47721
 2 resp tunnel dial-failed 502 127.0.0.1:47721
 3 req tunnel bridge-disabled 127.0.0.1:47720
 3 resp tunnel bridge-disabled 200 1.52s 127.0.0.1:47720

Before this change, rows 1 and 3 had only their req line, and exchange 2 did not appear at all. While tunnel 3 was open only its req row existed; the resp row appeared when it closed. Row 2's detail pane carries "error": {"kind": "dial_failed", "message": "dial tcp 127.0.0.1:47721: connect: connection refused"}.

Proxy (core)

The response row shares the open's requestId, so abctl pairs the two with no pairing change.

Tunnel Response row
opaque, when it ends, including the bridge fall-open re-dial the CONNECT's 200, how long the tunnel stayed open, and new bytesUp/bytesDown fields
failed dial, at once open with new reason dial-failed, then a 502 whose error is the dial error (transparent path too, where the 502 is synthetic like its CONNECT method)
bridged, served no decrypted request 200; there is no request to fold the open into, so it would otherwise look unfinished
bridged, forged handshake failed 200 with error.kind: tls_handshake
bridged, served requests none, as the issue proposed: the open folds into the first decrypted request, which has its own response
  • Which session the close goes in. It reuses the session the open was recorded under instead of looking one up again, which matters because a long tunnel closes minutes after it opened. How the open row picks its session is unchanged; that is Fix: CONNECT tunnel-open events mis-attributed to wrong session when multiple agents run concurrently #1187's business.
  • The recorder is now stateful. tunnelRecorder and noopRecorder are replaced by tunnelLog, which records each row at most once. tunnel() now returns the bytes it copied each way.
  • /v1/usage ignores tunnel rows. Every response the aggregator sees counts as a request with its duration in the latency figures. A close row's duration is how long the tunnel stayed open, minutes for kubectl logs -f, so counting it would drag latency toward tunnel lifetimes and change what "requests" means. The ledger was already limited to priced or inference events, so it is unaffected.
  • A related bug fix. When the fall-open re-dial fails, the handler now closes the client's connection. It used to leave it open until the client timed out, and TestHandleConnect_FallOpenRedialFailureRecordsTheError reproduced that as an i/o timeout before the fix.

abctl

  • A close row carries the tunnel marker too, so isTunnelOpen now also checks for the request phase. Before, a close followed by a request to the same host folded that request into itself and the close vanished from the timeline. TestBuildEventRows_TunnelCloseNeverFolds reproduced this.
  • BYTES is the first opt-in column, off by default, because only tunnel close rows have a figure. It sorts by the total. The settings loader already fell back to each column's own default, so saved configs keep it off. Comments and tests that assumed every column defaults on are corrected, and turning BYTES on is tested to survive a save and reload.
  • DURATION shows 4m12s at a minute and 1h02m at an hour, instead of 252.00s.

Not in this PR

  • Restructuring the transparent listener so its open row gets a tunnelReason. That listener is off by default, and the issue's "Related" section notes the restructure touches the same code.
  • A STATUS of open for a tunnel with no response yet. An older proxy never records close rows, so abctl cannot tell "still open" from "this proxy doesn't send closes" without a capability signal.
  • Fix: CONNECT tunnel-open events mis-attributed to wrong session when multiple agents run concurrently #1187, which attributes tunnel rows to the right session. It builds on the session the open row is recorded under, which this PR now carries through to the close.

Testing

  • core: go vet ./... clean, and go test ./... passes in all 60 packages. forwardproxy, transparentproxy, session, sessionapi and cost/usage also pass under -race.
  • cmd/abctl: GOWORK=off go vet ./... clean, and GOWORK=off go test ./... passes. TestRunExec_BeforeFirstStartRunsAndSaysWhatIsLost fails only when the shell already has SSL_CERT_FILE set; it fails the same way on main and passes with that variable unset.
  • cmd/authbridge-{proxy,envoy,praxis}: vet and build pass.
  • Each new test was watched failing first, for the stated reason, before the fix went in.
  • Smoke test: the table above, from a separate proxy instance on its own ports.
  • Two guards needed updating on purpose. TestSummarizeEvent_ShapeIsGuarded now counts 24 fields, and the byte fields are recorded as timeline data that the summary view must keep. TestTunnelReasonsAreDocumented now requires dial-failed, which is added to docs/laptop-service.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Tunnel activity now appears as paired open and close events with connection status, duration, and dial-failure details.
    • Enable the optional BYTES column to view traffic sent and received through opaque tunnels.
    • Tunnel events can be paired by request, and durations use readable units from seconds to hours.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Tunnel events are excluded from usage totals; regular requests carried through a tunnel remain included.
    • Tunnel close events no longer create or update session summaries.
  • Documentation
    • Updated event-column and tunnel-status guidance.

An opaque CONNECT tunnel recorded one session event, the tunnel-open, and
never a response, so its row in abctl had no STATUS or DURATION and a tunnel
that worked looked the same as one that was hung. A CONNECT whose upstream
dial failed was answered 502 and recorded nothing at all.

Each tunnel now records a response row that shares the open's RequestID,
so abctl pairs the two with no pairing change:

- an opaque tunnel, when it ends: the CONNECT's 200, how long the tunnel
stayed open, and new bytesUp/bytesDown fields for what it carried each
way. This includes the bridge fall-open re-dial.
- a failed dial, at once: an open with the new tunnelReason dial-failed,
and a 502 whose error carries the dial error. The same happens on the
transparent path, where the 502 is synthetic like its CONNECT method.
- a bridged tunnel that served no decrypted request, and one whose forged
handshake failed (error kind tls_handshake). Both would otherwise be the
only tunnel rows left looking unfinished. A bridged tunnel that did
serve requests still records no close, since its open folds into the
  first of them.

The close reuses the session the open was recorded under instead of
resolving one again. The open row's own attribution is unchanged.

The recorder had to become stateful, so the func-typed tunnelRecorder and
noopRecorder are replaced by tunnelLog, which guards both rows as at most
once. tunnel() now returns the bytes it copied each way.

Two side effects are handled deliberately:
- usage.Aggregator ignores tunnel rows. A close carries a tunnel's
lifetime, not a request latency (minutes for `kubectl logs -f`), and
counting it would change what /v1/usage calls a request.
- A fall-open re-dial that fails now closes the hijacked client
connection. It used to be left open until the client timed out.

…e durations

Follows the proxy change that gives opaque tunnels a close row.

- A close row carries the Tunnel marker too, so isTunnelOpen now also
requires the request phase. Keyed on the marker alone, a close
followed by a request to the same host folded that request into
itself, and the close disappeared from the timeline.
- BYTES shows the counts a tunnel close carries as "↑4.2k ↓18.2k". It is
off by default, the first opt-in column, because only those rows have
a figure. It sorts by the total. The settings format already fell back
to each column's own default, so a saved config that predates BYTES
keeps it off. Comments and tests that assumed every column is on by
default are corrected, and enabling BYTES is pinned as persisting.
- Durations of a minute or more render as 4m12s, and of an hour or more
as 1h02m. A tunnel's DURATION is how long it stayed open, and
"252.00s" made the reader do the division. Seconds hand over at
59.995s so rounding never prints "60.00s".

Pairing a close to its open needed no change, since both share a
RequestID. That is pinned by a test.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CONNECT and transparent tunnel paths now record close events with status, duration, errors, and byte counts. Session storage associates close events with their open events. The abctl interface displays tunnel data, and usage aggregation skips tunnel rows.

The change adds close-time rows for tunnels, records 502 responses for failed dials, and excludes tunnel rows from usage totals. No blocking issue was found in the supplied material, and the author reports passing checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6f0c6

Tunnel outcomes become more informative without an identified policy bypass or session-ownership regression. The main security consideration is that additional connection details inherit the existing unauthenticated session API’s network-access restrictions. Local and bridge-enabled configurations restrict this API to loopback, but deployed network isolation remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: In bridge-disabled configurations using the wildcard session API bind, newly recorded dial errors and tunnel traffic measurements become available to any peer able to reach that API, across the process’s retained sessions and live stream. This expands diagnostic information exposed through an existing unauthenticated channel; it does not introduce that channel. Loopback enforcement in bridge-enabled and built-in local configurations substantially limits exposure, while deployed network restrictions remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The additional information exposure is bounded to tunnel activity recorded by one proxy process and its session store. A reader needs network access to its session API, but no application credential. Actual cross-pod or external reachability depends on deployment controls not established by this review.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A peer already able to read the unauthenticated session API can now learn previously unrecorded tunnel failures, failure addresses, lifetimes, and traffic volumes. The API already exposes raw request and response content, so this is an incremental diagnostic-data exposure, not evidence of a newly created authentication bypass or credential leak.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Non-skipped CONNECT and transparent traffic still passes outbound policy before dialing. Transparent dialing uses the original destination rather than the sniffed name. CONNECT SkipHosts retains its explicit trusted-infrastructure bypass and suppresses both recording phases.
  • observed — The existing session API relies on network placement, not authentication or tenant authorization. TLS-bridge-enabled configuration rewrites its bind to loopback, and the built-in local configuration explicitly binds it to loopback. These controls counter broad exposure but do not establish isolation for bridge-disabled wildcard deployments.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Open, close, and bridged-request admission share a mutex: duplicate recording is suppressed, admission after closure is refused, and admitted requests suppress an unserved-tunnel close. Retained bucket ownership follows rekey or adoption while stale handles cannot revive removed sessions, preserving attribution and failure containment.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For bridge-disabled deployments, explicitly restrict session API reachability to trusted diagnostic readers through loopback binding or network policy. If access must span trust domains, add authenticated reader authorization rather than treating the optional session filter as isolation.

Reviewed against issue #1199's requirements and the repo conventions.

What I verified:

  • AppendTrailing correctly lands a tunnel's close in the open's session without refreshing UpdatedAt or activeID, and its eviction/expiry guards are mutex-held and refuse rather than re-creating the entry — the rekey/adoption and eviction races called out in the review-fix commits are covered by tests.
  • The stateful tunnelLog enforces at-most-once recording for both rows, and the admit() guard handles the h2 handler-after-ServeConn race.
  • The /v1/usage tunnel exclusion is deliberate, well-argued in the code comment, and the Counts doc comments were updated to match (the CodeRabbit finding).
  • abctl pairing: isTunnelOpen restricted to the request phase, stayedOpaque, closedTunnels map, and the session-list recency guard in app.go are consistent with each other, and pinned by TestBuildEventRows_TunnelCloseNeverFolds.
  • Test coverage is thorough across the proxy, store, usage, and TUI layers.
  • DCO signed on all 4 commits; conventional prefixes; CI green across all jobs.

Two suggestions and three nits inline — none blocking. Nice work on the review-fix commits; the byte-count formatter ("1.5B" vs "1.5GB") and the DURATION sort catches in particular.

suggestion: tunnel() now blocks on <-upc waiting for the first copy goroutine before returning. Both conns are closed before that wait, which makes it short for plain TCP — but if either side is ever a wrapper whose Close() doesn't unblock a pending Read, tl.close(...) (and the handler goroutine) hangs and the close row is never recorded. The old code returned as soon as the second copy finished. Consider a select with a timeout, or recording the close with the counts available when the second copy ends. Not blocking — the current callers dial plain TCP.

suggestion: AppendTrailing still goes through publishLocked, so the close row reaches every stream subscriber. abctl's app.go got the isTunnelClose guard so closes don't refresh session lists — have you checked the other Stream/subscribe consumers for the same "any event bumps session recency" assumption? This PR only audits abctl.

nit: excluding tunnels changes what Requests means on the public /v1/usage endpoint — dashboards calibrated on the old definition will see counts drop. The doc comments cover it and the PR body calls it out; if cortex keeps release notes, this deserves an entry there too.

nit: stayedOpaque only protects an open when its close row is in the same fetched window. A transparent-listener open (empty reason) whose close falls outside the page still folds into an adjacent same-host request, hiding the close. Edge case, transparent listener is off by default — fine to leave.

nit: a close row that genuinely carried 0 bytes both ways renders a blank BYTES cell, indistinguishable from a non-close row. The comment acknowledges it ("absent on the wire when zero"). Cosmetic.
