Summary

[AssertionFrom(typeof(Memory<>), nameof(Memory<int>.IsEmpty))] and similar declarations with an unbound generic type generated nothing and reported nothing, so the build succeeded but the assertion didn't exist. This PR adds real support for them. The generator now emits assertions that are generic over the type's parameters, so they work for any closed type:

[AssertionFrom(typeof(Memory<>), nameof(Memory<int>.IsEmpty), CustomName = "IsEmptyMemory")]
public static partial class MyMemoryAssertions;

await Assert.That(Memory<int>.Empty).IsEmptyMemory(); // generates IsEmptyMemory<T>(this IAssertionSource<System.Memory<T>>)

Cases it can't generate now report TU0001 instead of producing nothing.

Root cause

In AssertionMethodGenerator, member lookup on an unbound type finds nothing. The generator tried to construct Memory<object> first, but it searched for System.Object in the assemblies that the type's own assembly references, and CoreLib references none, so that step failed. The "no member found" branch then returned nothing without a diagnostic, because unbound generics were deliberately exempt from TU0001. Even with lookup fixed, the rendering produced code that didn't compile: it used the unbound type in signatures, called the IsEmpty property as a method, and emitted no extension methods.

Fix

I chose to support unbound generics properly rather than only adding a diagnostic. Once the type is normalized, most of the existing generator logic already handles it.

  • When the attribute data is extracted, an unbound generic type is replaced with its original definition (Memory<> becomes Memory<T>). The definition has members to look up and can be named in generated code, so all the existing symbol comparisons work unchanged. That made the System.Object lookup hack unnecessary, so I removed it.
  • The condition class and the extension method are generic over the definition's type parameters, plus any type parameters of the method itself. The type parameters' constraints are copied over, e.g. where TKey : notnull. Signatures use the definition's display name (System.Memory<T>), and properties are read as properties.
  • Unbound generics are no longer exempt from TU0001: a member that doesn't exist on the type is reported.
  • If the member is declared on a different type from the unbound target, e.g. [AssertionFrom(typeof(Box<>), typeof(BoxHelpers), ...)], TU0001 is reported with a message that explains the limitation. Supporting that would mean mapping one type's type parameters onto another's, which is out of scope.
  • The diagnostic reuses the existing TU0001 path. I didn't add a new ID, so that the diagnostic plumbing Fix TUnit0014 on interface implementations, Aspire exit-code culture and [AssertionFrom] expectation messages #7135 is reworking isn't touched twice.

TUnit's own Memory<> / ReadOnlyMemory<> declarations

src/TUnit.Assertions/Conditions/SpanAssertionExtensions.cs still had the four unbound declarations that never generated anything. With this fix they would start generating public MemoryIsEmptyAssertion<T> / ReadOnlyMemoryIsEmptyAssertion<T> types and IsEmpty<T> / IsNotEmpty<T> extensions, which duplicate MemoryAssertionBase.IsEmpty() / IsNotEmpty(). I removed the declarations and kept both (empty) SpanAssertionExtensions classes, so the only PublicAPI snapshot change is the removed attributes.

Note: #7135 also rewrites this file and the PublicAPI snapshots. Whichever PR merges second will hit a small conflict, and taking #7135's version of SpanAssertionExtensions.cs and re-accepting the snapshots resolves it. The generator changes in this PR avoid the regions #7135 changes: the diagnostic plumbing, the condition-class name references and GetExpectation. The new snapshot in this PR does include GetExpectation() output, so #7135 will need to re-accept it if it merges second.

Tests

  • tests/TUnit.Assertions.Tests/Bugs/Tests7132.cs covers the issue's repro (Memory<int> with IsEmptyMemory), a negated ReadOnlyMemory<string> assertion, and an instance method that takes a type-parameter argument (Bag<T>.Holds(T)). Each one checks both the pass and the fail path. On main these fail to compile with CS1061, as in the issue. With the fix all 4 pass.
  • tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/UnboundGenericAssertionFromTests.cs:
    • A snapshot test of the generated output for a struct property, a negated property, a method with a T parameter, and a 2-arity class with a notnull constraint. It also compiles the generated code together with call sites on closed types and asserts there are no errors. Snapshots are accepted for net8.0, net9.0, net10.0 and net472, and they are identical across all four.
    • TU0001 is reported for a missing member on an unbound type.
    • TU0001 is reported for an unbound target whose member is declared on another type.
  • Test runs:
    • Full TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests on net10.0: 73/73 passed. The new tests pass on net8.0, net9.0, net10.0 and net472.
    • Full TUnit.Assertions.Tests on net10.0: 2277 passed, 2 skipped, 0 failed.
    • TUnit.PublicAPI: snapshots re-accepted for net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0, where only the 4 attributes were removed. net472 is unchanged.

Fixes #7132

Behaviour change

An [AssertionFrom] with an unbound generic type used to generate nothing and report nothing. Shapes this PR cannot support, such as a member declared on a different type than the open generic target, now fail the build with error TU0001. Before, they never produced a working assertion either.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Generated assertions now support unbound generic types, including generic methods, nested types, and constrained type parameters.
    • Assertions can be generated for members declared on generic targets across supported frameworks.
    • Added documentation for creating assertions from open generic types.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Missing members and unsupported declarations now produce diagnostics.
    • Generated assertion names are disambiguated for naming conflicts.
    • Removed duplicate memory-based IsEmpty and IsNotEmpty assertions.

[AssertionFrom(typeof(Memory<>), ...)] generated nothing and reported nothing.
Member lookup ran on the unbound type, which has no members, and unbound
generics were exempt from TU0001, so the assertion silently did not exist.

The generator now replaces an unbound generic type with its original
definition (Memory<T>), looks members up on it directly, and emits a condition
class and extension method that are generic over the type's parameters (with
their constraints), so the assertion works for any closed type. Properties are
read as properties. When the member is declared on a different type, or does
not exist, TU0001 is reported instead of generating nothing.

TUnit's own Memory<>/ReadOnlyMemory<> declarations in SpanAssertionExtensions,
which never generated anything, are removed rather than turned into public
assertions that duplicate MemoryAssertionBase.IsEmpty()/IsNotEmpty(); both
SpanAssertionExtensions classes are kept so the public surface is unchanged
apart from the attributes.

Explanation

Issue #7132 requires working assertions for unbound generic targets or a diagnostic. The generator normalizes unbound types, emits generic condition classes and extension methods, preserves renamed type-parameter constraints, renders properties, and reports TU0001 for missing members and unsupported cross-type members. The new tests compile closed-type call sites and verify both diagnostic cases. The Memory<> and ReadOnlyMemory<> declarations are removed to avoid duplicate APIs.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #7132. Type-parameter naming, class collision handling, and explicit generic method calls prevent invalid generated output required by unbound-generic support. The generator tests, regression tests, documentation, snapshots, and retained empty extension classes support the requested behavior.

Review of #7144

I read the diff but did not build or run the tests. The approach looks sound.

What's good

  • Normalising typeof(X<>) to OriginalDefinition once, when the attribute data is extracted, is simpler than special-casing it at each lookup. It lets you delete the System.Object assembly-scan workaround.
  • Cases the generator can't handle now report TU0001. Before, they produced nothing and the build still succeeded.
  • GetUnboundGenericTypeParameters includes the type parameters of generic containing types. It also carries the constraints through via CollectGenericConstraints(IEnumerable<ITypeParameterSymbol>). The Pair<TKey,TValue> where TKey : notnull snapshot covers this.
  • The snapshot test data covers a property, a method that takes T, and a two-parameter type.

Points to consider (not blockers)

  1. Duplicated guard. RenderConditionClasses and RenderExtensionMethods both repeat the check IsUnboundGeneric && ContainingType != TargetType. It would be less fragile to compute "unsupported unbound generic" once, for example as a nullable error on the attribute data model. Both renderers and the diagnostic would then read from one place, so they can't drift apart.
  2. Removed public assertions. The Memory<T> and ReadOnlyMemory<T> [AssertionFrom] declarations in SpanAssertionExtensions are gone. They never generated anything, and MemoryAssertionBase already provides IsEmpty and IsNotEmpty, so nothing is lost. Please run tests/TUnit.PublicAPI to confirm the empty TUnit.Assertions.Extensions.SpanAssertionExtensions shim is the only public surface change.
  3. Unsupported-case coverage. I'd add a snapshot or diagnostic test for the TU0001 path, where the containing type differs from the target type. The positive cases are covered, but the new diagnostic message isn't.
  4. Class name collisions. Condition class names such as BoxHoldsWithTAssertion<T> come from the type and method name, not the custom name. Two [AssertionFrom] attributes on the same type and method with different CustomName values would share one class. This is existing behaviour, and the IsEmpty / IsNotEmpty pair works because it deliberately shares the class. It's worth confirming that two non-negated attributes on the same method don't generate the same class twice.

Overall this is a clean fix and I'd be happy to see it merged.

…alls and mixed arities in unbound [AssertionFrom]

- Give each type parameter of a generated assertion a distinct name when the
target type, its containing types or the method reuse a name (Box<T>.M<T>,
Outer<T>.Inner<T>), and render every type through those names.
- Call generic methods with explicit type arguments, since a method type
parameter cannot always be inferred from the arguments (bool Matches<U>()).
- Include the class arity in the duplicate-class key, so the generic class for
typeof(Box<>) and the non-generic one for typeof(Box<int>) are both emitted.
- Compute the unsupported-unbound-generic check once.

Review dispositions for 1267d31:

Inline threads (all fixed and resolved)

  • When the type, a containing type and the method reuse a type parameter name (Box<T>.M<T>, Outer<T>.Inner<T>), the generated type parameters now get distinct names, and every rendered type uses them. Raised by Codex, Greptile and CodeRabbit.
  • Calls to generic methods now pass the method's type arguments explicitly. Raised by Greptile.
  • The duplicate-class key now includes the class's arity, so the classes for typeof(Box<>) and typeof(Box<int>) are both emitted. Raised by Greptile.

claude-review

  1. Duplicated guard: fixed. It is now one IsUnsupportedUnboundGeneric helper, which both renderers use.
  2. Public API: tests/TUnit.PublicAPI passes locally (net10.0). The only change is the removal of the Memory/ReadOnlyMemory [AssertionFrom] declarations, already reflected in the committed snapshots.
  3. TU0001 coverage: already covered by UnboundGenericAssertionFromTests.Reports_Unbound_Generic_Member_Declared_On_Another_Type (containing type differs from the target) and Reports_Missing_Member_On_Unbound_Generic_Type.
  4. Shared class names: two non-negated attributes on the same member do not generate the class twice. The allGeneratedClasses set emits it once. However, the shared class keeps the first attribute's ExpectationMessage. That bug predates this PR, so I filed it as [Bug]: [AssertionFrom] attributes for the same member share one condition class, so a second ExpectationMessage is ignored #7160.

CI: the earlier .NET, Locale Test and Platform smoke tests runs were cancelled, not failed: every red job has conclusion cancelled and no failed step. The new push reruns them. Locally, all 73 TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests pass on net10.0 and net8.0, and snapshots were accepted for every TFM. TUnit.Assertions.Tests (2281 tests) and TUnit.PublicAPI pass on net10.0.

Report unsupported out methods before generating source.

If Box<T> declares bool TryGet(out T value), normalization now lets [AssertionFrom(typeof(Box<>), nameof(Box<int>.TryGet))] reach the renderer. The renderer emits actualValue.TryGet(_value) without out, so the consuming project fails to compile. Reject this method with TU0001, or generate a valid by-reference call and parameter contract. Review of #7144

I read the generator diff. I did not build the PR or run the snapshot tests, and I skimmed the rest of the diff (the later generator hunks, SpanAssertionExtensions.cs, the verified snapshots and Tests7132.cs) without a full read. The automated code-review skill also failed to run, so this is a manual pass.

What looks good

  • Replacing the unbound type with its OriginalDefinition once, when the attribute data is extracted, is cleaner than the old constructed-with-object workaround. Lookup, symbol comparison and rendering then share one path, and the fragile System.Object search is gone.
  • Emitting TU0001 for unsupported unbound-generic cases, instead of silently generating nothing, fixes the actual user-facing bug.
  • GeneratedTypeParameters handles name collisions such as Box<T>.Holds<T> and nested generic containers with a stable renaming scheme. The generated names cannot collide with declared ones.
  • Putting the arity in the condition-class dedup key (NameN``) means Memory<> and `Memory` assertions can coexist.
  • There are generator snapshot tests for all TFMs, a regression test (Tests7132) and public API snapshots.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  • IsUnsupportedUnboundGeneric is checked in both RenderConditionClasses and RenderExtensionMethods, and the second check relies on the first having reported the diagnostic. Computing validity once, for example a flag or error on the attribute data model, would remove that implicit coupling.
  • Add a snapshot or diagnostic test for the unsupported case, where the member is declared on a different type than the unbound target. That would show TU0001 stays reported and nothing partial is emitted.
  • Check the AOT and trimming impact of the new SpanAssertionExtensions additions. The generated code is plain generics, so I expect no problem.

I found no blocking issues. LGTM.

…bers distinct names

Two [AssertionFrom] targets with the same simple name and member, such as
Box<T>.IsEmpty declared in two namespaces, produced the same condition class
name. The second class was dropped as a duplicate, so its extension method
constructed the first target's class and the generated code did not compile.

Classes are now deduplicated by what they assert on (target, containing type,
member and arity). When a different member would reuse a name, its class is
prefixed with the declaring namespace (ReproTwoBoxIsEmptyAssertion) and its
extension methods are updated to match. Existing class names are unchanged.

Review dispositions for 02053cf:

CodeRabbit thread (same class name for Box<T>.IsEmpty in two namespaces): fixed in 02053cf and resolved. Classes are now deduplicated by the member they assert on, and a different member that would reuse a name gets a namespace-prefixed class name.

Latest claude-review (23:05)

  1. Duplicated IsUnsupportedUnboundGeneric check: both renderers already call the single helper added in 1267d31. RenderExtensionMethods only returns early so it does not emit methods for a class that was never rendered; it does not depend on the diagnostic having been reported. I have left it as is.
  2. Test for the unsupported case: already covered by Reports_Unbound_Generic_Member_Declared_On_Another_Type, which asserts TU0001. Nothing is emitted in that case because both renderers return empty output.
  3. AOT and trimming: this PR removes the Memory<T>/ReadOnlyMemory<T> [AssertionFrom] declarations from SpanAssertionExtensions rather than adding any, and the generated code uses no reflection, so there is no AOT impact.

Tests run locally: TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests (74 tests) pass on net10.0 and net8.0 with no snapshot changes, and TUnit.PublicAPI passes on net10.0.

Review of #7144 (unbound generics in AssertionFrom). Normalizing Memory<> to its original definition is a sound approach: it removes the System.Object lookup hack, keeps existing symbol comparisons working, and turns the old silent no-op into a TU0001 diagnostic. I read only part of the diff (the generator file) and did not run the build or tests. Concerns: (1) RenameIdentifier rewrites already-rendered source with a regex when a condition class name collides; this can hit string literals or parameters sharing the name. Prefer resolving final class names in a pre-pass and passing them into rendering, or add a test where the name appears in a string or parameter. (2) IsUnsupportedUnboundGeneric is evaluated in both RenderConditionClasses and RenderExtensionMethods, with the second relying on the first to report; compute it once at extraction or carry it in the model. (3) Please confirm a snapshot declares both typeof(Memory<>) and typeof(Memory) in one project to cover the arity-keyed dedup. (4) Removing the SpanAssertionExtensions declarations changes the PublicAPI snapshot and will conflict with #7135; whichever merges second must re-accept snapshots. Overall the design is a clear improvement; item 1 is the main change I would make before merge. Please confirm CI is green, including generator snapshot tests and tests/TUnit.PublicAPI. 🤖 Generated with Claude Code

A condition class that collides with another member's class is renamed.
The rename was a regex over the rendered source, so it also rewrote
references to a different overload with the same base name (Check() and
Check<T>() on one type), and could rewrite string literals that contain
the name.

Classes are now rendered with a placeholder keyed by the member, and the
final name is substituted for that placeholder only.

Review dispositions for 0ac2d78:

Greptile thread (mixed Check() / Check<T>() overloads fail to compile after a rename): fixed in 0ac2d78 and resolved.

Latest claude-review (23:32)

  1. Regex rename can hit string literals or other identifiers: fixed in 0ac2d78. The regex is gone. Each condition class is rendered with a placeholder keyed by the member it asserts on, made of control characters that never occur in generated code. The final name is substituted for that placeholder only, so string literals, parameters and other overloads are left alone. The new test Renaming_A_Colliding_Class_Leaves_Other_Overloads_Alone puts the class name in an ExpectationMessage and checks it survives unchanged.
  2. IsUnsupportedUnboundGeneric evaluated twice: answered in the previous dispositions. It is one helper, and RenderExtensionMethods only uses it to skip emitting methods for a class that was never rendered. It does not rely on the diagnostic being reported. Left as is.
  3. typeof(Memory<>) and typeof(Memory<int>) in one project: already covered. UnboundGenericAssertionFrom.cs declares both typeof(Box<>) and typeof(Box<int>) for IsEmpty. The snapshot and GeneratesGenericAssertionsForUnboundGenericTypes assert that both BoxIsEmptyAssertion<T> and BoxIsEmptyAssertion are emitted, and the test compiles the result.
  4. PublicAPI conflict with Fix TUnit0014 on interface implementations, Aspire exit-code culture and [AssertionFrom] expectation messages #7135: noted. Whichever PR merges second will re-accept the PublicAPI snapshots. Nothing to change here.

Tests run locally: TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests pass on net10.0, net9.0 and net8.0 (75 tests) with no snapshot changes. On net472, everything passes except ParamsParameter, which is the existing failure tracked in #7140 and is not touched by this PR.
