fix(engine): run every overload of a [Test] method in filtered runs - #7332
Overloaded [Test] methods were all discovered, but a run with any --treenode-filter executed only one overload per class. This happened in both source-generated and reflection modes, and in non-generic classes as well as generic ones. The issue's guess about ParameterMetadataFactory.ForGenericMethod turned out to be wrong: the test ids were already distinct.
Root cause: filtered execution collects metadata into a HashSet<TestMetadata> (MetadataDependencyExpander.ExpandToIncludeDependencies) that uses TestMetadataEqualityComparer. That comparer compared class, method name, test name and method type arguments, but not parameters, so two overloads counted as the same metadata and one was dropped. --list-tests takes a different path, which is why both still showed up there.
Changes
TestMetadataEqualityComparer now also compares parameter Type and TypeInfo. TypeInfo is what tells M(T) apart from M(object), because both emit a placeholder type. ConstructedGeneric is compared structurally, since record equality compares its array by reference. It also compares the declaration site (LineNumber, FilePath), because source generation erases some shapes completely: M(T[]) and M(object) both emit an object placeholder. The hash code stays the same; it is still consistent with the stricter equality.
The declaration-site check also compares StartColumnNumber, so erased overloads declared on one line stay separate. It is skipped when both items are dynamic tests. In reflection mode a dynamic test is yielded both by the source-generated dynamic source and by the reflection builder scan, with different creator locations, and DynamicTestIndex already tells dynamic tests apart.
AotTestDataCollector (source-gen filter pre-pass): the dependency index keyed by (class, method name) kept only the last overload. It now keeps a list, so [DependsOn(nameof(Overloaded))] pulls in every overload, the same way MetadataDependencyExpander already does.
Added the fixtures from the issue (tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7207), for a generic class and a non-generic one, plus GenericArrayOverloadTests<T> (M(T[]) vs M(object)) and DependsOnOverloadTests (a filter that selects only a [DependsOn(nameof(Overloaded))] test must pull in both overloads). The engine test (Bug7207OverloadedTestMethodsTests) asserts each of these.
Validation
TUnit.TestProject, filter /*/TUnit.TestProject.Bugs._7207/*/*: before the fix, 2 results in each mode, only Overloaded(a, 3). After the fix, all 9 tests pass in both source-gen and --reflection. Both new fixtures fail against the previous code: the array overload drops to 1 of 2 tests, and the dependent filter runs 2 tests with 1 failure.
TUnit.Engine.Tests (net10.0): *Bug7207*, *Depend*, *DependsOn*, *Dependenc*, *Filter* and *Generic* all pass. The AOT-mode variants are skipped locally, as usual; CI covers them.
CI note: the DynamicTestIndexTests failure on c858fb3 came from this PR: reflection mode ran 10 dynamic tests instead of 5. It is fixed in 53a4532. Earlier, the modularpipeline (ubuntu-latest) failure on 4b380f4 was the known ResourceStartupWaiterTests flake (#7282), unrelated to this change.

A rabbit checks each method name, Two overloads now remain in frame. Through generic types, the tests run, Their source locations distinguish each one. Dependencies bring both methods through, The rabbit hops, with checks all true.
The root cause analysis is sound. TestMetadataEqualityComparer ignored parameters, so the HashSet<TestMetadata> in filtered runs dropped overloads. The fix in the comparer is minimal. Leaving the hash code unchanged is safe, because it stays consistent with the stricter equality. The AotTestDataCollector change from last-wins to a list per (class, method) correctly matches what MetadataDependencyExpander already does for [DependsOn]. The regression fixtures cover generic and non-generic classes, and the engine test runs in every mode.
Non-blocking suggestions:
SameTypeInfo hand-rolls structural equality for ConstructedGeneric because the record compares its array by reference. A cleaner long-term fix is to give ConstructedGeneric a value-based Equals/GetHashCode, which also fixes any other consumers. Otherwise this helper must be kept in sync if new TypeInfo shapes (for example nested arrays) gain array members.
SameParameters runs on every hash collision lookup. That is cheap here, but the ReferenceEquals fast path is a good touch.
It would be worth adding one fixture that distinguishes M(T) from M(object) in a generic class. The comment cites it as the reason for comparing TypeInfo, but the added tests don't exercise it.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issue was found.
Summary
Filtered runs now keep overloaded tests instead of dropping methods with the same name.
Filtered test runs keep overloaded methods as separate tests.
Filtered dependencies include every overload of the named method.
Both earlier, unnumbered findings are addressed: erased array overloads now have declaration-site checks, and the dependency loop has filtered regression coverage.
The root-cause analysis is convincing: TestMetadataEqualityComparer ignored parameters, so HashSet<TestMetadata> dropped overloads. The AotTestDataCollector fix, which keeps a list per (class, method), is correct and matches MetadataDependencyExpander. The regression fixtures cover non-generic, generic, erased-parameter and DependsOn cases in both modes.
Two things to consider:
Declaration-site comparison is a workaround for lossy metadata. Comparing LineNumber/FilePath fixes M(T[]) vs M(object), but it makes equality depend on source location. That is fragile if line info is ever absent or zeroed, for example in some reflection paths. In that case it silently degrades to the old collapsing behaviour for those shapes. The more durable fix is for the generator to emit distinguishing TypeInfo for T[] (an array/generic-parameter shape). Then the comparer wouldn't need location data. If that is out of scope, please open a follow-up issue and reference it in the comment.
Hash code. It is still consistent, but it now ignores everything the equality uses. Overloads therefore collide into the same bucket. This is cheap at current scale. Mixing in the parameter count would be free and would reduce collisions.
SameTypeInfo is a manual structural compare because the record's array equality is by reference. It's fine, but a one-line comment pointing at the ConstructedGeneric definition would help future maintainers. Nothing here is blocking. LGTM.
The root-cause analysis matches the diff. TestMetadataEqualityComparer ignored parameters, so overloads collapsed in the HashSet. The fix is correct and well covered.
Good
The comparer now compares parameter Type and TypeInfo. The structural comparison of ConstructedGeneric handles the by-reference array equality.
The AotTestDataCollector dependency index now keeps a list per (class, method). [DependsOn(nameof(X))] therefore pulls in every overload, consistent with MetadataDependencyExpander.
The fixtures cover generic, non-generic, erased-placeholder (T[] vs object) and dependency cases. The engine tests assert each one.
Observations (non-blocking)
Comparing LineNumber/FilePath is a pragmatic workaround for the lossy source-gen emission of M(T[]) vs M(object). A sturdier long-term fix is to emit a distinguishing signature identity on MethodMetadata, such as the method's metadata token or a full signature string. Equality could then compare that single value instead of combining parameter shapes with source location. That would also avoid the extra SameTypeInfo machinery. A follow-up issue could track it.
If a reflection-mode LineNumber were ever 0 or unset for both overloads, the line/path check would not separate them. The parameter comparison is then the only separator. This is fine for the cases you tested, but it is worth a comment.
The hash code is unchanged while equality is stricter. That is valid, but overloads now collide in the same bucket. The cost is negligible at test-count scale.
Assert distinct TestId values in Both_Overloads_Run.
Both_Overloads_Run checks the outcome, the total, the pass and fail counts, and the sorted TestName values. It never checks TestId. Issue #7207 requires the two overloads to have distinct test IDs. A regression that gives both results the same ID, while keeping two results with different names, would still pass this test. Other filtered-run tests in the repository already assert ID uniqueness, so the missing check fits existing practice.

The root-cause analysis is sound. TestMetadataEqualityComparer ignored parameters, so overloads collapsed in the HashSet<TestMetadata> used by filtered runs. Comparing parameter Type and TypeInfo fixes that. The structural ConstructedGeneric comparison is needed because record equality compares the array by reference. The AotTestDataCollector change, from last-wins to a list per name, fixes a second, separate overload-drop bug on the [DependsOn] path. The regression fixtures cover the cases that were failing, including the erased T[] vs object case and the dependency pull-in.
Non-blocking notes:
Comparing LineNumber/FilePath is a heuristic. It works as a tie-breaker. The more robust fix would be for the generator to emit a real distinguishing identity for the overload, such as a method signature string or token, and compare that instead of source position. The comparer would then not depend on where the code sits. If a metadata instance can ever be built with default or zero line numbers (dynamic tests, for example), two different overloads could still collide. Equal values for genuinely different tests are the remaining risk. A follow-up issue could track the signature identity.
The hash code ignores the new fields. That is correct, and unequal items with equal hashes only cost some bucket collisions. Overload-heavy classes will all share a bucket, but that is fine at realistic sizes.
SameTypeInfo falls back to Equals for other TypeInfo shapes. If any other TypeInfo subtype holds arrays, such as an array or nested generic wrapper, it would have the same by-reference problem. Worth a quick check.
Overall this is a well-tested, targeted fix. LGTM.

The declaration-site check split each dynamic test in reflection mode into
two, because the source-generated dynamic source and the reflection builder
scan report different creator locations for it (DynamicTestIndexTests ran 10
tests instead of 5). Dynamic tests are already told apart by
DynamicTestIndex, so skip the location check for them.
Also compare StartColumnNumber, so erased overloads declared on one line
stay separate (CodeRabbit finding).
