fix(mocks): qualify extern-aliased types with their alias in generated code - #7403
A type from a reference declared with <Aliases>LibAlias</Aliases> is not part of the global alias, so the mock generator's global::Lib.Services.IPublisher failed with CS0234. Generated code now names such types as LibAlias::Lib.Services.IPublisher and declares the alias.
ExternAliasQualification maps each assembly whose reference has only non-global aliases to its first alias (cached per compilation). Discovery transforms activate it for their compilation. While it is active, MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString, which every type-name helper already goes through, replaces the global keyword of an aliased type, type arguments included. The open-generic typeof expression now also goes through that helper.
Emission gets the compilation's alias list from CompilationProvider. Every generated file that qualifies a name with an alias gets extern alias X; after its header comments and directives, including the closed-generic factory file. The alias list stays equal across edits that leave references unchanged, so it does not invalidate cached output. Compilations with no aliased references keep the existing fast path.
Generated type and hint names drop a leading alias qualifier (IdentifierEscaping.StripAliasQualifier), so an aliased IPublisher gets the same IPublisherMock and Lib_Services_IPublisher_* names as an unaliased one. If the same type exists both globally and under an alias, the clash is still reported as TM008 by the existing collision detector.
New Issue7300Tests: a snapshot, plus a compile check of the generated code against an in-memory library referenced with an alias. The library covers an interface with an event and property, an abstract class (partial mock), a generic interface mocked through Mock.Of and through [assembly: GenerateMock] (closed-generic registrations), and a local interface that uses an aliased type. Without the fix the compile check fails with the CS0234 errors from the issue. The harness Roslyn cannot parse C# 14 extension blocks, so the check filters for name-resolution and extern-alias error codes, as other tests in this project do.
All of TUnit.Mocks.SourceGenerator.Tests passes on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0, including the incrementality tests and the existing snapshots, none of which changed.
TUnit.Mocks.SourceGenerator.Roslyn44, Roslyn47 and Roslyn414 build.
End to end with the real SDK compiler (net10.0, TreatWarningsAsErrors), using a library ProjectReference with <Aliases>LibAlias</Aliases> and this branch's generator: setup, invocation and WasCalled on the aliased interface, a partial mock of the aliased abstract class, Mock.Of<LibAlias::...IRepository<Message>>(), [assembly: GenerateMock(typeof(LibAlias::...IRepository<string>))] and IPublisher.Mock() all build and run.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(mocks): qualify extern-aliased types with their alias in generated code" matches the main change. The PR makes TUnit.Mocks qualify types from extern-aliased references with their alias (Alias::Namespace.Type), emits matching extern alias directives, and keeps generated names consistent. The linked issue #7300 asks for the same behavior. The title is specific and follows a conventional commit style. It does not cover the alias-name sanitization, event-raiser name, or test changes, which is expected for a short title.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #7300 is the only directly linked issue, and it is open. Its coding requirement is that generated mock code must not emit unresolved global::Namespace.Type names for types from an extern-aliased reference. The issue accepts either alias-qualified names with a matching extern alias directive, or a clear diagnostic. The PR implements alias-qualified emission. ExternAliasQualification maps each assembly whose reference has only non-global aliases to its alias. MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString replaces global with that alias for the qualified type, including type arguments and the open-generic typeof path. MockSourceSink adds extern alias directives to each generated source. IdentifierEscaping.StripAliasQualifier and EventRaiserBuilder.GetInterfaceName keep generated type and hint names the same as those for unaliased types. The changes since the previous review affect only naming and alias-stripping paths. They strengthen the same requirement and do not remove the alias-qualified emission. The author reports that Issue7300Tests, the snapshot, the compile check, and the SDK end-to-end build pass. I did not run these tests. Test results for net8.0, net9.0, and net10.0 beyond the reported net10.0 run remain for CI. This does not change the verdict, because the code evidence supports compliance.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Each changed area supports extern-alias mock generation for #7300. ExternAliasQualification provides alias discovery, the scope, and directive insertion. MethodTypeParameterRenames and TypeSymbolExtensions provide the global to alias replacement. MockGenerator, MockEmitResult (MockSourceSink), and MockTypeDiscovery pass the alias list to emission and activate the scope per compilation. IdentifierEscaping, MockImplBuilder, and EventRaiserBuilder keep generated names identical with or without an alias. Issue7300Tests and its snapshot cover the new behavior. The raw summary shows no unrelated product behavior. One effect needs a note. SanitizeIdentifier now removes alias tokens before :: throughout a name, including nested generic arguments. This can also change names for nested global:: arguments in unaliased code. The author reports that existing snapshots did not change. I did not verify this by running the snapshots. The effect follows from the stated goal of identical names with or without an alias, so it does not show an unrelated change.

Review: extern alias qualification for mocks (#7300)
Solid, well-scoped fix. I read the diff and did not run the tests.
Good
Hooking into MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString means every type-name helper picks up the alias without per-call-site changes.
The alias list comes from CompilationProvider as an EquatableArray, so it only invalidates cached output when references change. Compilations without aliases skip the extra work.
StripAliasQualifier keeps generated type and hint names the same whether or not the reference is aliased.
Tests cover a snapshot plus a compile check, including closed generics and a local interface that uses an aliased type.
Points to consider (none blocking)
Substring detection in AddExternAliasDirectives.source.IndexOf(alias + "::") can match inside a string literal, a comment, or a longer identifier (for example alias Lib matching MyLib::). The worst case is an unused extern alias, which is harmless under #pragma warning disable. Still, the more robust option is to record which aliases were actually emitted while building the type names. The model could carry that set, and each file would declare exactly what it uses.
Assembly referenced both globally and aliased.Build skips a reference that has the global alias, but a second reference to the same assembly with only an alias still adds that assembly to ByAssembly. Types would then be emitted as Alias:: even though global:: also works. This is valid code, just unnecessary. If you want to be precise, drop assemblies that are also reachable through any global reference.
[ThreadStatic] ambient scope. It follows the existing _active rename pattern and the scope is restored on dispose, so this is fine. It is implicit state, though: any type-name code that runs outside a discovery transform, such as emission, silently falls back to global::. A short comment, or an assertion in the emit path, would make that contract clearer.
Only the first alias (aliases[0]) is used for references with several aliases. That is correct but worth a one-line comment.
Overall this looks good to merge, with the points above as optional follow-ups.
Pushed keyword-alias fix 301d94b for Greptile's blocking finding. All 201 mock-generator tests and existing snapshots pass on net10.0; Roslyn44, Roslyn47 and Roslyn414 builds pass. net8.0/net9.0 tests built but could not launch because only the .NET 10 runtime is installed, so those executions remain for CI.
Claude's optional points are dispositioned as follows: substring detection may add a harmless unused alias under the generated warning pragma; globally reachable aliased assemblies still produce valid qualified code; the existing scope documentation describes discovery activation and emission consumes the collected alias list. These do not require broader changes here. The new alias-map comment now documents choosing one alias. No blocking finding remains pending a fix; fresh reviews of the new head are required before promotion.
Restore/build warnings are tracked in #7412 (vulnerable transitive Pkcs), #7413 (net8.0 MSBuild dependencies), and #7410 (release tracking).
The approach is sound and well scoped. It routes alias substitution through MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString, which every type-name helper already uses. The alias list comes from CompilationProvider and stays equal across edits that don't change references. Compilations without aliased references keep a cheap fast path. The tests cover the snapshot, a compile check, and keyword-alias (@class) equivalence. I found no blocking issues.
Non-blocking suggestions:
Ambient [ThreadStatic] state.ExternAliasQualification._active is hidden state that every discovery transform has to remember to enter. A transform that forgets to call Enter would silently emit global:: again, and the compiler won't catch it. The existing _active rename scope already works this way, so it's consistent. Still, a single choke point would be safer, for example a helper that wraps every CreateSyntaxProvider transform. Alternatively, put the alias map into the model-building context object and pass it explicitly.
Textual alias detection.AddExternAliasDirectives finds used aliases with source.IndexOf(alias + "::"). That can match inside a longer identifier (XLibAlias::) or inside a string literal or comment. The effect is a harmless unused extern alias, since the file has #pragma warning disable. If you want precision, track the aliases actually emitted during GetAlias and pass that set along. It's a small tweak and avoids rescanning large sources.
Header-skipping loop. The loop that finds the insertion point skips comment and # lines. If the file header ever contains a block comment (/* */) or a #nullable that spans lines, it would insert in the wrong place. This is fine for current builders. A comment on the header contract, or inserting at a known marker, would make it more robust.
Alias choice.aliases[0] is used when a reference has several non-global aliases. That's deterministic, but it depends on declaration order. A comment saying so is enough.
Current head 301d94b has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, and the only blocking thread is fixed and resolved. Claude's optional ambient-state and textual-detection suggestions retain the existing disposition: the scope is documented and conservative extra directives are harmless. The header insertion contract is documented as leading comment/preprocessor lines and matches the current builders; supporting hypothetical future block-comment headers is outside this fix. Alias selection is already documented beside aliases[0]. No further change is required for these non-blocking suggestions.
Promoting to ready for review to start CI. The ready_for_review Claude run must pass and its comment be read before auto-merge can be armed.
PR is now ready for review; the head remains 301d94b. CI has started, including .NET run 41546939321. Auto-merge remains unarmed until the new ready_for_review Claude review passes and its findings are dispositioned. A later unit should read every review surface again and use Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 once that gate passes.
Move StripAliasQualifier above the SanitizeIdentifier doc comment.
The new method sits between the SanitizeIdentifier summary (Lines 31-42) and SanitizeIdentifier itself. The injectivity explanation, including the #6505 note, now documents StripAliasQualifier. SanitizeIdentifier has no documentation.
Place the new method before Line 31. The summary then stays attached to SanitizeIdentifier.
♻️ Proposed fix
Remove the method from its current position:
- /// <summary>- /// Drops the leading alias qualifier of a fully qualified name: <c>global::</c>, or an extern- /// alias such as <c>LibAlias::</c> (#7300), so generated names do not depend on how the mocked- /// type's reference is aliased.- /// </summary>- internal static string StripAliasQualifier(string name)- {- ...- }-
Then insert the same block (unchanged) directly after EscapeIdentifier (after Line 29), before the SanitizeIdentifier summary that starts at Line 31.

Review of #7403 (extern alias support in mock generator)
Overall this is a solid, well-scoped fix for #7300. I found nothing that should block merge. The notes below are suggestions.
What I like
The change goes through MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString, the existing single choke point for type names. That avoids touching every builder.
Compilations with no aliased references keep a fast path: one cached ConditionalWeakTable lookup per scope.
GetAliases returns a sorted EquatableArray, so incremental caching isn't invalidated by edits that leave references unchanged.
Scope save/restore handles nesting, and the generated names are normalised via StripAliasQualifier.
Tests cover a snapshot plus a real compile of the generated code, including events, abstract classes, closed generics and the keyword/escaped alias case.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Ambient [ThreadStatic] state._active is implicit global state. Every new discovery entry point has to remember using var aliasScope = Enter(...). A missed call fails silently, with the old CS0234 coming back. This PR adds five call sites in MockTypeDiscovery. A more robust option is to pass the alias map explicitly (for example a field on the discovery context) or to wrap the transforms in one helper, so the scope can't be forgotten. A small test or assertion that fails if a transform formats names without a scope would also help.
AddExternAliasDirectives uses text matching.source.IndexOf(alias + "::") can match inside an unrelated token. For example, alias Lib matches global::MyLib::-style text, or an alias name appearing in a string literal or comment. A false positive only adds an unused extern alias, which is harmless at worst, but tracking the aliases actually used while formatting would be exact and cheaper than scanning each generated file.
Only aliases[0] is used. That is fine when any alias reaches the assembly. It means that if the user's own code already refers to the assembly through a different alias, generated code uses another name, which is still valid. A short comment saying so is enough.
Header scan. The header-skipping loop in AddExternAliasDirectives allocates a substring per line. It only runs when an alias is used, so it's fine. AsSpan().Trim() would avoid the allocations if you want to tidy it.
Run 41546939321 completed with a real snapshot failure, so the earlier CI wait is resolved. Fixed in 27cd61f: reviewed and accepted the five-line snapshot addition for the typed async return methods already generated on this branch. Also moved the StripAliasQualifier documentation so the existing injectivity summary documents SanitizeIdentifier, addressing CodeRabbit’s nit. Rebased onto current main c2d1660 for fresh CI.
Validation: all 202 TUnit.Mocks.SourceGenerator.Tests pass on net10.0; git diff --check passes. Only .NET 10 is installed locally; other runtime legs remain for CI. Existing restore/analyzer warnings remain tracked in #7410, #7412 and #7413. Android smoke run 41546939295 failed before executing tests because its emulator never booted; recorded separately in #7439. The fresh head will run CI again rather than rerunning the failed old head.
Claude’s latest optional ambient-state, conservative alias detection and header-allocation suggestions retain the prior non-blocking disposition; alias selection is documented. The new head needs fresh Claude/Codex review and CI before auto-merge can be armed. Auto-merge is disabled. No external prerequisite or human decision blocks continued work.
Review of #7403 (extern alias qualification for mock generator)
The approach is sound and well contained. I read ExternAliasQualification and MethodTypeParameterRenames in full. I did not read the rest of the diff or run any tests. Routing the alias swap through MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString is a pragmatic choice, because every type-name helper already goes through it. The fast path for compilations without aliased references is preserved. Keeping the alias list as an EquatableArray stops it invalidating the incremental cache. Dropping the alias prefix from hint and type names keeps the output names stable. Reporting the global-vs-alias clash as TM008 is a sensible choice. The new tests are good: one snapshot, plus a compile check against a real aliased library covering events, abstract classes and closed generics.
Points to consider, none blocking:
Ambient [ThreadStatic] state is fragile. The alias map is hidden state, so any display string rendered outside a Scope silently falls back to global::. That reintroduces CS0234, and the failure only shows up for users with aliases. The MethodTypeParameterRenames doc comment already warns about this with deferred LINQ. Longer term, an explicit context passed to the type-name helpers (or a model-time ISymbol to string step that takes the AliasMap) would make a missed call site a compile error. It would also remove the ThreadStatic and its nesting rules. If that is too large a change now, a test that exercises the closed-generic and event/property paths with aliases (which you already have) is the right guard.
Substring detection of used aliases.AddExternAliasDirectives checks source.IndexOf(alias + "::"). An alias named A would also match inside global::-free text such as TA:: or in a string literal or comment. The only effect is an unused extern alias (a harmless warning), and an alias that is genuinely used is always detected. Tracking the aliases actually emitted during rendering would be more precise, but this is acceptable as is.
Only aliases[0] is used. That is fine, since any alias reaches the assembly. Note, though, that two references to the same assembly with different aliases would collapse to the last one in the map. This is harmless, because the directives come from the map's values.
Escaping.EscapeIdentifier is applied once at map build, which is good. Make sure that an alias like @global or one that clashes with a user namespace name is covered by the Aliases tests if it is cheap to add.
Overall this looks correct and ready, with the caveat in point 1 as the main design risk to keep an eye on.
Pushed 44c5fe4 to fix the verified generic-argument alias naming finding; replied with the commit and resolved the thread. All 206 mock-generator tests, including existing snapshots and four new nested-generic alias regression cases, pass on net10.0. git diff --check passes. Other runtime legs remain for CI; existing restore/analyzer warnings remain tracked in #7410, #7412 and #7413.
The earlier blocker, run 41546939321, is completed and its snapshot failure was already fixed in 27cd61f. No repository prerequisite, human decision or external dependency blocks this fix, and this PR still delivers #7300 rather than superseding another PR.
Read the latest Claude conversation review for 27cd61f: its ambient-scope, conservative textual detection and multiple-alias observations retain their documented non-blocking dispositions. The additional optional alias-name coverage is not required for this fix: the existing compile and keyword-alias equivalence tests exercise escaping and qualification, and the new cases also cover Unicode and underscores. CodeRabbit’s docstring coverage warning is advisory; the affected helper already documents its contract. No further change is needed for these suggestions.
The PR remains ready with auto-merge disabled. Fresh Claude/Codex verdicts and CI for 44c5fe4 are required before arming auto-merge; the previous head’s approval is not reused. This unit pushed a fix and is not deferring behind the old run.

Generated code now names such types asLibAlias::Lib.Services.IPublisherand declares the alias.ExternAliasQualificationmaps each assembly whose reference has only non-global aliases to its first alias (cached per compilation). Discovery transforms activate it for their compilation. While it is active,MethodTypeParameterRenames.ToDisplayString, which every type-name helper already goes through, replaces theglobalkeyword of an aliased type, type arguments included. The open-generictypeofexpression now also goes through that helper.CompilationProvider. Every generated file that qualifies a name with an alias getsextern alias X;after its header comments and directives, including the closed-generic factory file. Compilations with no aliased references keep the existing fast path.IdentifierEscaping.StripAliasQualifier), so an aliasedIPublishergets the sameIPublisherMockandLib_Services_IPublisher_*names as an unaliased one.
