Generic-method discovery repeated source precedence, duplicate-source selection, and constraint fallback decisions in the generator and reflection engine. Both now consume a shared internal policy table, with the rules documented alongside the distinction between declared-type and runtime value inference.

A common 13-case matrix exercises existing fixtures in both discovery modes, checking row counts and outcomes for literal rows, typed sources, parameter inference, method sources, explicit types, duplicates, and constraint fallback. Generic-class inference and class/method pairing remain in #7451; parent #7371 stays open.

Closes #7450

Validation:

  • TestProject net10.0 build passed (serial build after a parallel MSBuild worker startup failure).
  • All 13 matrix cases passed directly in source-generated mode and reflection mode (26 targeted runs).
  • Full generator snapshot suite: 219 passed, 1 skipped; no snapshot changes.
  • Engine.Tests net10.0 build passed. Did not run Engine.Tests locally, per repository guidance; its AOT/reflection harness runs in CI.
  • No new reflection or public API surface. Native AOT execution remains for CI.

Latest validation after rebase onto a412ddd5a5 and review fixes:

  • Generator snapshots: 220 passed, 1 skipped; no snapshot changes.
  • TestProject net10.0 serial build passed.
  • 13 matrix cases and two class-source regressions passed in both discovery modes (30 targeted runs).
  • Preserved independent explicit-type arity failures from fix(generic): fail wrongly sized [GenerateGenericTest] in source-generated mode #7344; removed the unintended generic-class duplicate-source restriction identified in review.
  • Engine.Tests execution and Native AOT remain for CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Generic test discovery now applies consistent precedence and row-handling rules across inference sources. Duplicate inferred sources can join an existing instantiation according to the source, while typed and method data sources can fall back to explicitly supplied method types.
    • Source-generation and reflection modes now follow the shared inference policy, reducing differences in how generic tests are discovered.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on generic method inference, including source precedence, duplicate handling, explicit-type fallback, and differences between test-generation modes. The guidance also clarifies which related areas are outside the shared inference policy.

Follow-up validation and CI repair:

  • Passed the actual source kind through generic-class method constraint fallback; added a local policy-table order/flags contract test and strengthened the duplicate-source value assertion.
  • Refreshed four stale Mocks snapshots for the already merged nullable predicate/null-matcher behavior from fix(mocks): match null literals in generated predicate overloads #7415, which caused all three .NET jobs to fail. No Mocks production code changed.
  • Rebased onto d9e9e6638e: Core generator snapshots passed (222 passed, 1 skipped); all 232 Mocks snapshots passed; policy contract test passed; serial TestProject build passed; duplicate-source and two generic-class source regressions passed in generated and reflection modes (6 targeted runs). Engine.Tests and Native AOT remain for CI.

Walkthrough

The change defines a shared generic-method inference policy and applies it in source-generator and reflection discovery. It documents the policy and adds tests for policy ordering, fixture outcomes in both modes, and duplicate-source behavior.

Changes: Generic-method inference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared policy and scope
src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Helpers/GenericMethodInferencePolicy.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/TUnit.Engine.csproj, docs/internal/generic-method-inference.md
A shared rule table defines source precedence, row scoping, explicit-type fallback, constraint reporting, and duplicate joining. The engine compiles the helper. Documentation describes the rules and identifies class inference and class/method pairing as outside this policy.
Source-generator integration
src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs
Generic-method inference, duplicate handling, and method-source pairing now use the shared policy. The separate generic-method MethodDataSource pass is removed; class-only inference remains separate.
Reflection integration and tests
src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/GenericMethodInferencePolicyTests.cs, tests/TUnit.SourceGenerator.IncrementalTests/GenericMethodInferencePolicyTests.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7092/GenerateGenericTestTupleInferenceTests.cs
Reflection discovery uses the shared rules for source ordering, duplicate joining, constraint reporting, and row scoping. Tests check the policy flags, run fixtures in both modes, and assert the retained duplicate-source row.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Share generic method inference policy between discovery modes" matches the main change. The PR adds a shared internal GenericMethodInferencePolicy used by both the source generator (TestMetadataGenerator) and reflection discovery (ReflectionTestDataCollector), which the linked issue #7450 requests. The title is specific and concise, and it names the primary change without listing files.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7450 requires one shared policy, shared duplicate joining and constraint fallback, documentation, and one parity matrix run in both modes. The reviewed head meets these points:

  • Shared policy: src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Helpers/GenericMethodInferencePolicy.cs defines the table Rules in the order Arguments, TypedDataSource, ParameterAttribute, MethodDataSource, GenerateGenericTest. The engine links the same file (TUnit.Engine.csproj).
  • Consumers: TestMetadataGenerator.cs iterates Rules for the declared-source phases. ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs iterates Rules for the same phases. Type extraction stays in each adapter (Roslyn symbols and reflection).
  • Duplicate joining: JoinsDuplicate is called by both adapters. Literal rows join. Inferred sources join only where the generator flag allows it. Reflection passes joinsInferredSources: false, which keeps its previous typed-argument-only joining.
  • Constraint fallback: ReportsConstraintViolation is used by both adapters. For typed and method sources it reports only when no explicit method types exist. For the other sources the result matches the previous per-branch logic.
  • Documentation: docs/internal/generic-method-inference.md records the precedence, duplicate, fallback, and mode-difference rules. It excludes class instantiation and class/method pairing (#7451, parent #7371).
  • Parity matrix: tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/GenericMethodInferencePolicyTests.cs runs 13 fixture cases in both TestMode values. It checks outcome and total/passed/failed counts.
  • Policy contract: tests/TUnit.SourceGenerator.IncrementalTests/GenericMethodInferencePolicyTests.cs checks table order and flags.

The reflection duplicate behavior for _7092/GenerateGenericTestDuplicateMethodDataSourceInferenceTests changed. The test comment previously stated that reflection ran an extra SecondRows instantiation. The current head expects three tests in both modes, and the author reports that this passes in both modes. This alignment matches the shared duplicate rule in the issue. The PR description does not call it out as a reflection behavior change.

Evidence limits: Engine.Tests execution and Native AOT results are not available to this review. They remain CI evidence. The matrix pass results and the Core generator snapshot results are author-reported.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against merge base d9e9e6638e contains these changes:

  • docs/internal/generic-method-inference.md (documentation of the shared policy).
  • GenericMethodInferencePolicy.cs (new shared policy).
  • TestMetadataGenerator.cs and ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs (adapters that consume the policy).
  • TUnit.Engine.csproj (links the policy file).
  • Two policy test files and the parity matrix.
  • tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7092/GenerateGenericTestTupleInferenceTests.cs (comment update and one added assertion for the retained int source).

Each change supports issue #7450. Generic-class instantiation and class/method pairing rules are unchanged. The generator comment states that the class-only phase is mutually exclusive with the generic-method phases. No public API or unrelated feature change appears in the diff.

The commit message of 4c9b538e4d and the PR description state that four Mocks snapshot files were refreshed. The tests path diff against merge base shows no Mocks snapshot file changes. The reviewed diff therefore does not contain that claimed unrelated change. Because the diff does not show it, no out-of-scope change is demonstrated.

Review: shared generic-method inference policy

The direction is good. One policy table that both discovery modes consume, with the rules documented and a 13-case matrix run in both modes, should stop the two implementations drifting apart. I found no blocking bugs. The notes below are design and behavior-risk points.

1. The generator join condition adds a clause the old one did not have.
The old condition was Arguments || (specificAttr != null && !isClassRow && joinsDuplicateMethodSources). The new call passes isGenericClass: isClassRow || testMethod.IsGenericType, and the testMethod.IsGenericType part is new. For a method on a generic class with no explicit types, a duplicate non-literal typed source used to join when !isClassRow. It is now dropped. The doc says sources of a generic method on a non-generic class join, so this may be intentional. If it is, say so in the PR. If it is not, remove it. No fixture appears to cover it, which would explain why the snapshots did not change. A matrix row for a generic class with a generic method and duplicate sources would settle it.

2. Two JoinsDuplicate call sites in reflection are effectively constant.

  • In ResolveDeclaredTypedSourceInstantiations, hasExplicitTypes: false, isGenericClass: false makes the helper always return true. The if is dead and only looks like a policy decision.
  • In the explicit-types collector, hasExplicitTypes: true reduces the helper to isLiteralRow, because the JoinsDuplicate field is false for every non-Arguments rule. The isGenericClass argument has no effect.

Dead arguments suggest the helper is wider than its callers need. A narrower API, or a named decision with real inputs at each caller, would read more honestly.

3. Only part of the table is shared.

  • Arguments and GenerateGenericTest are boundary phases that both adapters handle outside the loop.
  • Each adapter keeps its own switch (rule.Source), so precedence is shared but per-source behavior is still duplicated.

This is acceptable as a first step, and the doc says so. Consider a small test that asserts the rule order and flags, so a change to Rules fails visibly.

4. Minor.

  • The reflection loop rescans dataSources once per rule (5 passes). Probably negligible, but it is in discovery.
  • GetRule does a linear scan and spells out System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException. An array indexed by the enum would avoid both.
  • The two using TUnit.Inference; additions are out of order.

Verdict: a reasonable, behavior-preserving refactor, pending confirmation of point 1. CI still needs to confirm the Engine.Tests matrix and AOT, since they were not run locally.

Pushed e679153f819b93ce94377653723c8d6cb9d900c1. Rebased onto current main, preserving #7344's independent arity failures and declared-source fallback even for empty or wrongly sized explicit types.

Claude point 1 was correct: the additional testMethod.IsGenericType check was an unintended behavior change. Removed it, preserving the original isClassRow boundary. Generic-class policy remains in #7451.

Points 2–3 are nonblocking design observations: the constant reflection inputs document the two separate discovery paths (without explicit types versus with explicit types); extraction and class pairing stay adapter-specific as documented. Further API narrowing and direct table assertions can be considered alongside that policy work. Point 4's using order is fixed; the short policy scans remain unchanged, with no performance claim.

Validation: generator snapshots passed (220 passed, 1 skipped, no snapshot updates); TestProject net10.0 serial build passed. All 13 matrix cases plus BroadSourceJoinsClassRowTests and DeferredSourcePerConcreteClassTests passed in both generated and reflection modes (30 targeted runs). Engine.Tests execution and Native AOT remain for CI, per repository instructions.

Review of #7455

I read the diff but did not run the build or tests. Where I compared old and new conditions, the refactor looks behavior-preserving. The matrix test and the documentation are useful.

Concerns

  1. The table is only partly driving behavior. Several policy columns and parameters are never used as data.

    • JoinsDuplicate(...) is called with Source.TypedDataSource at every call site, including the [MethodDataSource] and class-closed paths. The per-rule JoinsDuplicate flag is never read for Arguments or MethodDataSource, so the Arguments row's joinsDuplicate: true is dead (literal rows are detected through isLiteralRow).
    • ReportsMethodSourceViolation in the generator also hardcodes TypedDataSource.
    • In the reflection AddInstantiation, the new isGenericClass: classGenericParameterCount > 0 argument has no effect. hasExplicitTypes is true there, so the expression reduces to isLiteralRow.

Someone changing a table row could expect a behavior change that doesn't happen. Either pass the real source at each call site, or trim the API to what is used: JoinsDuplicate(bool isLiteralRow), plus ReportsConstraintViolation and ScopesRows.

  2. Boolean flag soup. JoinsDuplicate(source, isLiteralRow, hasExplicitTypes, isGenericClass) takes three booleans that callers map by hand. The generator passes hasExplicitTypes: !joinsDuplicateMethodSources, an inverted proxy. A small context struct, or deriving the flag directly, would be clearer and harder to misuse.

  3. Parallel loops remain. Each adapter still switches on rule.Source with its own extraction, so adding a source means editing both switches, and a new Source value falls through silently. Please state this limit in the docs, or add a test that both adapters handle every table row.

  4. Minor. GetRule is a linear scan with a throw, and indexing by enum would be simpler. The reflection AddInstantiation default source = TypedDataSource hides that callers must pass the source. Making it required would prevent the mistake in point 1.

Positives

  • One policy file linked into the generator and engine avoids duplicated rule knowledge.
  • The 13-case matrix runs in both modes and checks counts, which catches silently dropped sources.
  • The docs explain the declared-type vs runtime-inference distinction.

No blocking issues. I'd address point 1 before merge so the table does what its documentation claims.

Addressed Claude's repeated policy concern in 04ac2c5472669dea07375fb47f9e2a11863c03b9:

  • Removed the unused per-source duplicate flag and narrowed duplicate joining to literal-row status and whether inferred sources join. Removed the always-true reflection condition and the ineffective generic-class argument.
  • Made the reflection source argument required. Its callers already pass the actual rule source.
  • Documented that both adapters still need extraction-switch changes for a new source.

The generator's class-closed constraint helper intentionally treats typed and method sources alike: both table rows fall back to explicit method types. Literal rows and null sources are handled separately. No constraint behavior changed. The remaining linear lookup observation is nonblocking; the five-row scan remains unchanged without a performance claim.

Validation: generator snapshots passed (220 passed, 1 skipped, no snapshot changes); engine and TestProject net10.0 builds passed; all 13 matrix fixtures passed directly in both discovery modes (26 targeted runs). Engine.Tests execution and Native AOT remain for CI per repository guidance. Kept draft for fresh reviews of this head.

Review of #7455: shared generic-method inference policy

I found no blocking issues. The refactor is behaviour-preserving as far as I can tell from the diff.

What I checked

  • Rule order is Arguments, TypedDataSource, ParameterAttribute, MethodDataSource. That matches the previous phase order in both the generator and reflection.
  • The constraint-violation flag and row scoping now come from the table instead of ad-hoc booleans. Their values are equivalent to the old code: typed and method sources defer to explicit types, and parameter attributes and Arguments always report.
  • JoinsDuplicate keeps the old semantics. The generator joins for literal rows or for inferred method sources when the row is not a class row. Reflection joins only for typed Arguments rows.
  • Linking the single policy file into the engine project is straightforward. It has no Roslyn or reflection dependency.
  • The new matrix test runs the same fixtures in both discovery modes, which is the right way to guard parity. The PR reports 220 passing generator snapshots with no snapshot changes.

Design observations (non-blocking)

  1. The table only partly drives the adapters. Both adapters still switch on Source, and GenerateGenericTest and Arguments are boundary phases handled outside the loop in the generator. The doc admits that adding a source means editing both switches. ScopesRows and FallsBackToExplicitTypes are therefore the only behaviour the table owns. Precedence is shared in principle, but each adapter must still keep its own switch in the right order. Consider an adapter-supplied delegate or extractor per Source, so the loop body is shared and a missing case fails loudly. As it stands, an unhandled Source is silently skipped, since there is no default that throws. Adding default: throw to both switches (with the boundary sources explicitly continued) would at least catch drift.
  2. GetRule does a linear scan on a hot path. It is called per AddInstantiation in reflection discovery. The table has 5 entries, so the cost is negligible. Still, since AGENTS.md asks for minimal allocations and cached lookups in discovery, indexing by (int)source would be simpler and O(1).
  3. AddInstantiation in reflection takes a required source parameter, but the ParameterAttribute call passes row: null. The row is null || !ScopesRows check is then redundant for that case. Harmless, but the intent is clearer if you drop the row is null half.
  4. The two JoinsDuplicate arguments differ across adapters. The reflection side hard-codes joinsInferredSources: false, while the generator passes a mode flag. That encodes the remaining generator/reflection difference inside the shared predicate's call sites. A short comment at the reflection call site explaining why would help.

Tests

  • The matrix lives in TUnit.Engine.Tests, which I can't run locally per AGENTS.md. Please confirm CI is green for both modes and for the AOT job.

Overall this is a reasonable incremental step toward #7371, with good documentation. Approving in spirit, pending CI.

Current head 04ac2c5 has positive Claude and Codex verdicts and no inline threads. Claude’s remaining observations are nonblocking: the documented adapter switches and five-entry lookup remain appropriate for this incremental refactor; null-row handling keeps the shared collector consistent, and the adapter-specific duplicate inputs preserve existing behavior. No further code changes are needed for these notes.

Promoting to ready for CI, including the Engine.Tests matrix and Native AOT validation that repository guidance reserves for CI. The ready event also starts a fresh Claude review; auto-merge must wait for that review to pass.

Review

Overall this is a reasonable consolidation. The policy is a small, Roslyn-free file linked into the generator and the engine. Generator snapshots are unchanged, and the 13-case matrix runs the same fixtures in both modes, which is the right way to guard against drift. I found no correctness bugs in the diff.

Points worth considering:

  1. Table is only partly authoritative. Source.GenerateGenericTest has a rule that nothing reads, and Arguments is only reached through GetRule for ScopesRows in reflection. Both adapters still hand-code the ordering around the boundary phases and the switch over sources. The doc admits this ("adding a source requires updating both extraction switches"). Either trim the unused rows so the table doesn't suggest more than it enforces, or add a small test asserting the expected Rules order and flags, so a reorder is a visible, deliberate change.

  2. Misleading lookup in the generator. ReportsMethodSourceViolation in TestMetadataGenerator.cs calls ReportsConstraintViolation(Source.TypedDataSource, ...) for any non-Arguments source, including [MethodDataSource]. It is correct today only because both rules have fallsBackToExplicitTypes: true. Passing the actual source, or a named helper such as DefersToExplicitTypes(hasExplicitTypes), would avoid a silent break if the two rules ever diverge.

  3. Reflection constraint check reads awkwardly. ReportsConstraintViolation(source, hasExplicitTypes: true) && isMethodArgumentsRow && row is not null mixes the policy with the row-kind check. isMethodArgumentsRow is already effectively source == Arguments. Deriving it from source would remove a redundant parameter and one way for the two to disagree.

  4. GetRule is a linear scan and throws. The table has 5 entries and discovery runs it per method, so the cost is small. Still, an array indexed by the enum, or switch expressions on the properties, would be simpler and allocation-free. Since Rule is a struct, GetRule also copies it on each call.

  5. Test location. GenericMethodInferencePolicyTests lives in TUnit.Engine.Tests, which CI-only validation covers. A pure unit test of the policy table would run locally, because it needs no engine.

The doc is clear about the declared-type versus runtime-value distinction and the scope boundary with #7451. I'd approve once items 1 and 2 are addressed or explicitly deferred; the rest are optional.

Nitpick Assert the selected row in the duplicate-source fixture.

1-35: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert the selected row in the duplicate-source fixture.

The matrix count of 3 does not show which duplicate source supplies the <int, string> row. GenerateGenericTestDuplicateMethodDataSourceInferenceTests asserts only first is T1 && second is T2. That check passes for both (1, "a") from FirstRows and (2, "b") from SecondRows. A change that keeps SecondRows for <int, string> still runs three passing tests, so the matrix does not detect it in either mode.

Assert the value for the <int, string> instantiation. The <object, object> instantiation still accepts both rows.

Update Duplicate_Inferred_Types_Keep_The_First_Source in
GenerateGenericTestDuplicateMethodDataSourceInferenceTests to assert that the
int, string instantiation selects the row whose first value is 1. Keep the
object, object instantiation accepting both rows, and preserve the existing type
and matrix-count assertions.
