A single ValueTuple<T> test parameter generated a parenthesized scalar expression, causing CS1503. Reconstruct one-element tuples with an explicit globally qualified constructor while retaining tuple syntax for larger tuples. Factories preserve whole one-element tuples using parameter metadata, including nested tuple elements, and pass them to the direct invocation path.

Adds a generator snapshot and runtime coverage for static and instance sources, nullable values, nested tuples, TestDataRow-wrapped nested tuples, mismatched wrapped tuple payloads, and generic parameters closed to one-element tuples. Closed generic entries now carry concrete parameter metadata for factory and engine binding. Wrapped tuple payloads stay whole only when assignable to the expected tuple parameter; mismatched outer tuples retain their existing expansion. Removes an unused test import noted in review.

Validation on SDK 10.0.403, net10.0:

  • Core source-generator suite: 250 passed, 1 skipped; reviewed and updated the affected snapshot.
  • Targeted OneElementValueTupleTests: 12 passed in source-generated mode and 12 passed with --reflection. The two new mismatched-wrapper regressions fail with the previous preservation behavior.
  • Existing TestDataRowCallerArgumentExpressionTests: 2 passed in each mode.
  • Runtime project built with dotnet build -f net10.0 -m:1 -nr:false, then tests ran with --no-build. Default parallel test builds previously failed with MSB4166; tracked in Targeted test builds fail with MSB4166 child-node exits on macOS #7468.
  • Hosted CI and fresh automated reviews remain pending after the review fixes. No new reflection path was introduced; hosted AOT checks validate publishing.

Closes #7401

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed handling of one-element tuple data in tests, preserving tuple values whether supplied as a whole or as an unwrapped element.
    • Improved support for nested tuple values and data sources on both static and instance methods.

The source generator now preserves one-element ValueTuple data-source rows and handles wrapped or unwrapped tuple arguments during invocation. New tests cover nullable and nested tuple values from static and instance data sources.

Changes: One-element ValueTuple rows

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Fix source generation for one-element ValueTuple parameters" matches the main change. The PR fixes the source generator so one-element ValueTuple<T> test parameters compile and receive the tuple value. The raw summary and objectives confirm the change in TestMetadataGenerator.cs, the generated invoker, and the related tests. The title is concise and specific, and it does not use vague wording.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #7401 requires that a single one-element ValueTuple<T> test parameter compiles in source-generated mode and receives the tuple value. The reviewed head meets this requirement. In TestMetadataGenerator.cs, GenerateConcreteTestInvokerBody now builds one-element tuples as new {singleTupleParam.GloballyQualified()}(...). Tuples with two or more elements keep the parenthesized form. The generated snapshot OneElementValueTupleTests.Test.verified.txt shows the expected output, for example new global::System.ValueTuple<string>(global::TUnit.Core.Helpers.CastHelper.Cast<string>(args[0])), and it contains no parenthesized scalar expression. Runtime coverage in tests/TUnit.TestProject/OneElementValueTupleTests.cs covers static and instance data sources, nullable string rows with a value and null, and nested ValueTuple rows. The new invoker branch also keeps a whole one-element tuple row when args[0] is already a matching tuple. The factory change passes parameter metadata (keepSingleElementTupleWhole) for single-tuple-parameter test methods, which supports the preserved-row behavior. Limitation: I did not execute the build or tests. This assessment relies on the diff, the verified snapshot, and the test source, and the PR reports test results that I did not reproduce.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed files relate to the #7401 fix. TestMetadataGenerator.cs changes are limited to the single-tuple-parameter path. They add a methodSymbol argument to GenerateMethodDataSourceAttribute and EmitDataSourceFactoryInvocation, compute keepSingleElementTupleWhole, and add the one-element args[0] check and constructor reconstruction. The metadataArgument change only applies when the test has one non-CancellationToken tuple parameter. Multi-element tuple invocation is unchanged. The verified snapshot and the runtime test file exercise this path directly. The generator test class OneElementValueTupleTests.cs is the harness for that snapshot. The PR also removes an unused test import, which is a minor cleanup in the same test scope. No unrelated generator paths were changed in the diff I reviewed.

Review

The fix is correct and minimal. A one-element ValueTuple<T> is now rebuilt with new global::System.ValueTuple<T>(...). The old (expr) form was just a parenthesized scalar, which caused CS1503. Tuples with two or more elements keep the tuple-literal syntax. The generated snapshot shows the intended output.

  • Parallel path: the reference-tuple branch at line ~4480 already used new X(...), so this makes the two branches consistent. You could drop the length check and always use new ..., which would remove the special case. That would change the snapshots for existing tuple tests, so keeping it narrow is reasonable.
  • Nullability: the snapshot casts to string while the parameter is ValueTuple<string?>. This is harmless because the output has #nullable enable plus #pragma warning disable, and the runtime test covers the null row.
  • Coverage: the PR adds a generator snapshot and an engine test with both a value and a null row. Per the PR description it was run in source-generated and reflection modes.
  • Cleanup: the test file has an unneeded using System.Collections.Generic;. That is not worth blocking on.

LGTM.

Review

The fix looks correct and is well scoped. new global::System.ValueTuple<T>(...) avoids the parenthesized-scalar CS1503. The args[0] is not ValueTuple<T> guard sends whole-tuple rows from instance sources to the direct-invocation branch. A null element still takes the reconstruction path, which is what the (string?)null row exercises. The snapshot and the static and instance runtime tests cover both paths.

Minor notes, none blocking:

  • Ambiguous element type: if the single element type is object, or itself a ValueTuple<T>, a row holding a bare ValueTuple<T> value is ambiguous between the unwrapped and wrapped interpretations. That is an unusual case, but a short comment next to the guard would record the assumption.
  • Duplicated tuple-construction logic: the generator now has one-element tuple handling in this invoker body and probably elsewhere (the CS1503 path). If other places build tuples with (a, b) syntax, consider a shared helper such as BuildTupleConstruction(type, elements). That keeps the one-element special case in one place.
  • Reflection mode: the PR description says reflection mode was tested, and it passes. No further concerns there.

Approve from my side.

Addressed the nested-row ambiguity in e629658 by preserving one-element tuple rows at the factory, using the expected parameter metadata. This also addresses Claude's ambiguity note; added a comment documenting the preserved-row contract. Keeping tuple construction local avoids broadening this fix to unrelated generator paths.

Validation: SDK 10.0.403/net10.0 generator suite 250 passed, 1 skipped; targeted OneElementValueTupleTests 6 passed in source-generated mode and 6 passed with --reflection. The new static nested test fails on the previous factory behavior. Existing nullable/analyzer build warnings are tracked in #7410 and #7438.

Review

The fix is correct and well-scoped. A one-element ValueTuple<T> parameter now gets new global::System.ValueTuple<T>(...) instead of a parenthesized scalar, so the CS1503 is gone. Larger tuples keep tuple syntax.

The design holds up:

  • The args[0] is not ValueTuple<...> guard in the invoker is needed. Without it, a nested ValueTuple row would be unwrapped a second time.
  • Passing dataGeneratorMetadata to the static factory only when the sole non-CancellationToken parameter is a one-element tuple keeps the extra work off the common path.
  • The snapshot covers static and instance sources, nullable rows and nested rows. The runtime tests cover both source-generated and reflection modes, as the project constraints require.

Suggestions, none blocking:

  1. Duplicated detection. keepSingleElementTupleWhole in TestMetadataGenerator.cs re-implements the "single tuple parameter" pattern that GenerateConcreteTestInvokerBody also matches. A small shared helper such as TryGetSingleTupleParameter would stop the two from drifting apart.
  2. Unwrapped one-element tuples. The args[0] is not T guard only fires when the unwrapped element is itself the same tuple type. That case is correct and tested. A reflection-path or [Arguments] case that passes a raw ValueTuple as the unwrapped element is ambiguous by nature. A short comment saying so would help future readers.
  3. Missing case. Consider adding a test for a one-element tuple together with a CancellationToken, since the detection filters the token out.

Overall this looks good to merge once CI is green.

Both Claude and Codex approved e629658, and all review threads have dispositions and are resolved. Marked ready with the head unchanged. The latest optional helper extraction, additional ambiguity documentation, and CancellationToken test suggestions are nonblocking follow-ups; keeping this fix scoped to the validated source-row regression.

Waiting for the ready-for-review Claude run 41610560338 and CI. Auto-merge must wait for that Claude run to pass and its new review to be read, per the merge gate.

Review

The fix is sound. It reconstructs a one-element ValueTuple<T> with new global::System.ValueTuple<T>(...), which avoids the parenthesized-scalar CS1503. The method-data-source factory now keeps one-element tuple rows whole, and the invoker's args[0] is not ValueTuple<T> guard routes those whole rows to the wrapped-tuple branch. The snapshot and runtime tests cover static and instance sources, null elements and nested ValueTuple. I did not build or run anything for this review.

Observations, none blocking:

  • Ambiguity in the invoker guard. For ValueTuple parameters, a row that is meant as an unwrapped element but happens to be a ValueTuple (for example [Arguments(new ValueTuple(x))]) is now treated as the whole row. That is almost certainly the right reading, and the nested tests pin it down. A one-line comment at the guard saying the ambiguity is resolved in favour of the whole tuple would help future readers.
  • Duplicated detection logic. The "single non-CancellationToken tuple parameter of arity 1" check is written separately in GenerateMethodDataSourceAttribute (pattern match) and GenerateConcreteTestInvokerBody (parametersFromArgs). A small shared helper such as IsSingleOneElementTupleParameter(IMethodSymbol) would keep the two from drifting apart, and the factory side would no longer allocate a ToArray() for every method data source.
  • Condition scope. keepSingleElementTupleWhole only adds the metadata argument. It is worth confirming that the static helper overloads that receive dataGeneratorMetadata are trimming/AOT-safe, since they now read parameter types for these cases. The reflection-mode run in the PR description suggests behaviour matches.

LGTM overall.

Outside diff Preserve wrapped tuple payloads until type-aware unwrapping.

4417-4460: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve wrapped tuple payloads until type-aware unwrapping.

When a source returns TestDataRow<ValueTuple<object>> containing an outer one-element tuple whose element is another ValueTuple<object>, TestDataRowUnwrapper removes the outer layer before DataUnwrapper sees the expected parameter type. The current invoker then takes the direct-cast branch because the remaining inner tuple has the same runtime type as the parameter. The test receives the inner tuple instead of the outer tuple.

Keep the TestDataRow tuple payload intact until UnwrapWithTypesAndMetadata applies the parameter metadata. Do not remove the current invoker distinction, because raw tuple rows require the direct-cast branch.

The earlier blocker is cleared: Claude run 41610560338 completed successfully and its ready-for-review verdict was LGTM.

Addressed both new CodeRabbit findings in 89f979d:

  • Generic sources select preservation using the closed parameter symbols, and concrete entries carry closed parameter Type/TypeInfo metadata so both the factory and engine retain the outer tuple.
  • TestDataRow tuple payloads remain intact until type-aware binding when the test expects one tuple data parameter. Static and instance wrapped nested-row regressions now pass; the raw-row invoker distinction remains.

Validation: generator suite 250 passed, 1 skipped with the intentional snapshot reviewed; OneElementValueTupleTests 10 passed in each of generated/reflection modes; existing wrapper tests 2 passed in each mode. The initial regressions reproduced the reported tuple-level loss. No new reflection path was introduced; hosted AOT publishing checks remain required.

Claude's optional extraction/documentation/CancellationToken suggestions remain nonblocking follow-ups as previously dispositioned. This change removes the factory-side ToArray allocation. Fresh CI and both automated reviews are needed for the new head; auto-merge remains unarmed until those review requirements are met.

Updated the missing wrapped-pair generator snapshot in 17eb68b and resolved the finding after reproducing it. Full net10.0 generator suite passes: 250 passed, 1 skipped. Earlier run 41610560338 succeeded; it is no longer the blocker. Current head now needs fresh automated reviews and hosted CI; auto-merge remains unarmed until the review gate passes.

Review of #7467: one-element ValueTuple parameters

I read the diff but didn't build it or run any tests. The fix targets the right problem: it replaces the parenthesized scalar with an explicit new global::System.ValueTuple<T>(...), which fixes the CS1503. It also covers nested and TestDataRow-wrapped tuples and closed generics. The regression coverage is good (static and instance sources, nullable values, mismatched wrappers, both execution modes).

Design concerns (non-blocking)

  1. The same rule is written three times. "The single non-CancellationToken parameter is a tuple" now lives in HasSingleElementTupleParameter (generator), DataUnwrapper.GetSingleTupleDataParameterType (engine), and the args[0] is not T check in the emitted invoker. If these drift apart, the source-generated and reflection modes will behave differently, which AGENTS.md says must not happen. I'd put the shared logic in one place, or at least add a test that asserts the generator and the engine agree on a matrix of parameter shapes. For example, a tuple plus a CancellationToken, two tuple parameters, and a tuple whose single element is another tuple.
  2. methodMetadata is rewritten with with { Parameters = ... } in the emitted code. This puts closed-generic metadata in the entry, which is a bigger change than the bug needs. It also adds per-entry allocations at registration, and it only happens when a single-element tuple parameter is present. That's acceptable, but please confirm the with copy keeps lazy attribute access and doesn't force reflection under AOT. The PR description says hosted AOT checks are still pending, so please wait for them.
  3. args[0] is not ValueTuple<X> is a heuristic. A row such as ValueTuple whose element is itself a ValueTuple is ambiguous by construction. The PR resolves it as "whole row wins". That's a reasonable choice, but please state it in a comment or in the docs so users aren't surprised.
  4. UnwrapArray(values, expectedTupleType) adds an optional parameter to a public helper. Check tests/TUnit.PublicAPI. If the snapshot changed, the .verified.txt update should be in the PR. If it didn't change, the helper isn't public API and this is fine.

Overall this is a solid fix with strong tests. I'd merge once CI, including AOT, is green and the duplication in point 1 is either consolidated or covered by a test.

The earlier wait is cleared: run 41610560338 succeeded, and the current head 17eb68b has successful Claude review, a completed Codex verdict with no findings, and green hosted CI including all three AOT and engine platforms. All review threads have dispositions and are resolved.

Disposition of the latest Claude observations:

  • Keep the detection in its respective layers: the generator uses Roslyn parameter symbols, the engine uses runtime ParameterMetadata, and the emitted invoker handles argument shape. These are different operations rather than an identical predicate that can move into one runtime helper. Existing nested, wrapped, generic, static and instance regressions exercise their agreement in both execution modes (12 passed in each); broader CancellationToken/multiple-parameter coverage remains an optional follow-up as previously dispositioned.
  • MethodMetadata and ParameterMetadata are records. Their with copies copy fields; only Parameters, Type and TypeInfo are replaced. ParameterMetadata retains its ReflectionInfoFactory, ReflectionInfoResolver, index and cached attributes without invoking ReflectionInfo. The generated entries retain the separate createAttributes delegate. Hosted AOT publishing is now green.
  • The comment at the generated invoker guard explicitly states that a matching tuple is the whole row even when its element is another tuple of the same type; nested regressions pin this behavior.
  • TestDataRowUnwrapper is an internal static class, so its public member is not a shipped public API change and needs no PublicAPI snapshot update.
