feat(sourcegen): inherit XML docs from [GenerateAssertion] source methods - #7687
Documented public [GenerateAssertion] source methods now share their XML docs with the generated extension; other methods keep the "Generated extension method for X" placeholder. The generator emits
/// <inheritdoc cref="M:MyLib.LatencyAssertions.HasPercentileAtMost(MyLib.Latency,System.Double,System.Double)" path="/*[not(self::returns) and not(self::param[@name='value'])]"/>
The cref is ISymbol.GetDocumentationCommentId(), the member name exactly as the XML file writes it; the compiler copies it without binding, so overloads, generics and file classes need no cref syntax.
path drops <returns>, which describes the source method's result, and the receiver's <param>, since the extension names that parameter source.
The incremental model stores only the ID, so editing a doc comment regenerates nothing.
Libraries that document their public [GenerateAssertion] methods gain docs for every generated extension. Placeholders in TUnit.Assertions.xml (net10.0): 240 to 230; in TUnit.Mocks.Assertions: 3 to 0. Checked by hand in Visual Studio 2026, VS Code and Rider 2026.2.4.1 (project and package references) and with an automated Roslyn Quick Info check.
Snapshot Tests: If I changed source generator output or public APIs:
I ran TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests and/or TUnit.PublicAPI tests
I reviewed the .received.txt files and accepted them as .verified.txt
I committed the updated .verified.txt files
Performance: If this change affects hot paths (test discovery, execution, assertions):
I minimized allocations and avoided LINQ in hot paths
I cached reflection results where appropriate
AOT Compatibility: If this change uses reflection:
I added appropriate [DynamicallyAccessedMembers] annotations
I verified the change works with dotnet publish -p:PublishAot=true
Testing
All existing tests pass (dotnet test)
I have added tests that cover my changes
I have tested both source-generated and reflection modes (if applicable)
Additional Notes
Tests: MethodAssertionGeneratorTests.DocumentedMethods, two XmlDocsRegressionTests resolving every cref from source and from a package, and two incremental tests.
Run locally: TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests 559/559 on four frameworks, TUnit.SourceGenerator.IncrementalTests 83/83, TUnit.Assertions.Tests 6907 passed and 6 skipped, TUnit.PublicAPI 78/78; TUnit.Engine.Tests left to CI.
Known limitations: Rider 2026.2.4.1 shows the inherited docs from source, but does not expand inheritdoc from a package's XML documentation file (for any inheritdoc, even one pointing at string.Trim), so a Rider user of a package sees no description where the placeholder only repeated the method name. In source, Rider ignores path, so it also shows the <returns> line and the receiver's <param>. Non-public source methods keep the placeholder, as their cref cannot resolve from a package. Copying the docs instead would cover both, at the cost of duplicated docs and more generator code; happy to switch if you prefer.
Optional follow-ups: AssertionExtensionGenerator's 69 "Extension method for X" summaries, the assertion class summary, and an ExpectationMessage-based summary.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Generated assertion extensions now inherit XML documentation from documented public source methods, including summaries, remarks, and parameter details.
Bug Fixes
Documentation references exclude return and receiver-parameter entries that do not apply to the generated extensions.
Documentation
Clarified how inherited documentation appears in generated XML documentation and how undocumented or non-public methods are described.
…hods
Generated [GenerateAssertion] extension methods carried the summary
"Generated extension method for X" even when the source method was
documented, so IntelliSense never showed the library author's docs.
For a documented public source method, emit an inheritdoc whose cref
is the compiler's documentation ID and whose path drops <returns>,
which describes the source method's result rather than the returned
assertion. Other methods keep the placeholder: a package reference
does not expose non-public methods, so their cref would not resolve.
The generator now records documentation IDs for documented public source methods and uses them in generated extension-method <inheritdoc> references. The references exclude return and receiver-parameter documentation. Tests cover generated documentation, source and package resolution, and incremental updates.

Summary
Capture and emit source documentation src/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator/Generators/MethodAssertionGenerator.cs
The generator records a documentation ID for eligible public methods. Generated extension methods inherit source documentation without <returns> or receiver-parameter documentation. Methods without an ID retain the generated summary.
Fixtures and snapshots cover generated assertions and inherited documentation across method and containing-type visibility cases. Tests check fallback summaries, parameter names, and generated-code compilation.
Regression tests check that generated references resolve to documented source methods in source and package-consumer contexts, with the expected documentation path. The documentation describes inheritance for public documented methods and placeholder summaries otherwise.

A rabbit reads docs by the garden gate “These notes now follow each method straight.” The source speaks softly through the code, Its summary finds the extension road. The rabbit hops, content and bright, And tucks the fresh docs in tonight.
The change is small and well-targeted. I didn't find any blocking issues.
What I checked
Incremental caching:DocumentationId is stored in the model as a plain string, so editing doc text doesn't regenerate output, as the PR says.
Fallback: non-public methods, and methods with no docs (including when DocumentationMode is off, since GetDocumentationCommentXml then returns empty), keep the old placeholder summary.
Overloads, generics, nested types: emitting the raw doc ID as the cref avoids building cref syntax by hand. The verified snapshots cover these cases (IsSameValueAs``1(``0,``0), nested classes, overloads).
Returns:path="/*[not(self::returns)]" correctly drops the source method's <returns>.
Minor, non-blocking notes
The first parameter of the source method (for example value) is source on the generated extension, so its <param> docs won't carry over. The generated method also adds *Expression parameters that have no docs. Generated code has warnings suppressed, so this is harmless. It's worth a line in the docs if users ask why the receiver parameter has no description.
If a consuming library has GenerateDocumentationFile on but the doc ID's source assembly ships no XML (for example a package built without docs), hovers will be empty. The old placeholder at least showed something. This is an edge case, and the DeclaredAccessibility check already covers the main one.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge, with no new actionable issues found.
Summary
Generated assertion extensions inherit XML docs from documented public source methods. Undocumented and non-public methods keep the placeholder summary.
Documented assertion methods pass their XML docs to generated extensions.

The generated extension renames the source method's first parameter to
source, so that parameter's <param> was inherited but could attach to
nothing. The inheritdoc path now drops it, together with <returns>.
Add a test that sees the generated docs as a package consumer does: it
emits the fixture and its generated code to a DLL with its XML file,
references it from a second compilation, and checks that every cref
resolves there while the internal source method's ID does not.
Leave the test assembly out by its name without extension, so the
cref tests also exclude it on .NET Framework, where it is an .exe.
Nice, focused change. Documented [GenerateAssertion] methods now get an <inheritdoc> pointing at the source method by documentation ID, and the rest keep the placeholder.
What I like
Storing only the doc ID (a string) in the incremental model means doc-comment edits don't invalidate the pipeline. The incremental test covers this.
Using the M: ID avoids hand-building crefs for overloads, generics and file types. The snapshots show this working.
path="/*[not(self::returns) and not(self::param[@name='<receiver>'])]" is the right call. <returns> describes the source method's result, not the assertion, and the receiver param is renamed to source. The comment on the unescaped parameter name is accurate, since identifiers can't contain @.
Tests are thorough: snapshots for all TFMs, a package-reference resolution regression test, and a Roslyn Quick Info check.
Minor observations (non-blocking)
The accessibility guard only checks the method (DeclaredAccessibility != Public). The snapshots show docs inherited from public methods inside internal, private nested and file classes. This works only because the compiler-emitted XML file includes docs for non-public containers, and the FromPackage test confirms it. The comment above the guard ("a package reference does not expose non-public methods") rests on that same lookup-by-ID reasoning. It would help to say in the comment why a non-public containing type is fine but a non-public method isn't, or to guard on the containing type's accessibility too. Otherwise a future reader will assume it's an oversight.
This only helps when the consumer's .xml doc file ships (GenerateDocumentationFile). Libraries without it still get no docs. That's expected, and one line in the docs or release notes would set expectations.
GetDocumentationCommentXml is called on every candidate method in the transform. It's cheap, but note that it parses lazily. If this becomes a hot spot, DocumentationMode can be checked first.

…XML docs
The guard comment now says why only the source method's own accessibility
matters: a public method in an internal, file-local or private nested type
still resolves from a package. The source generator assertions page notes
that documented public source methods pass their XML docs on to the
generated extension through the library's XML documentation file.
I found no blocking issues. The approach is sound.
What I like
Emitting <inheritdoc cref="M:..."> from GetDocumentationCommentId() is a better fit than copying the XML text. The compiler copies a documentation-ID cref without binding it, so overloads, generics and file types need no cref syntax.
The incremental model stores only the ID string. Editing a doc comment therefore doesn't invalidate the pipeline or regenerate anything.
The public check runs before the documentation read, so only public methods pay for it. The comment explains why only the method's own accessibility matters.
The path filter drops <returns> and the receiver's <param>. That is correct, since the extension renames that parameter to source.
Snapshot tests cover overloads, generics, nested types, internal types and file types, and there is a regression test for cref resolution from a package. The docs page is updated too.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
The generator doesn't change the generated extension's source parameter, so users get no hover doc for it. Emitting a <param name="source"> next to the inheritdoc would fill that gap. It could be added later, and it would need a snapshot update.
FirstParamName comes from Parameters[0], which matches how the extension is built, so the filter is safe. It might be worth a one-line test where the receiver is named something other than value. The existing tests may already cover this.
If a source method's <param> docs mention the receiver by name in the prose, the text will read slightly oddly. That is cosmetic.
Overall this is a clean, well-tested improvement. I'd approve it.
