Summary

Resolves #169.

When bundling node-fetch-native/proxy under worker runtime conditions (such as Cloudflare Workers workerd in Nuxt/Nitro), bundlers match the package root . to ./dist/native.mjs. However, "./proxy" previously only declared node and nested default conditions without explicit runtime conditions. Resolvers that match workerd on the root then fall back to legacy subpath resolution (dist/native.mjs/proxy), producing ENOTDIR: not a directory, stat .../dist/native.mjs/proxy.

Changes

  • Add runtime conditions (workerd, worker, browser, bun, deno, edge-light, edge-routine, lagon, netlify, react-native, wintercg) to "./proxy" in package.json pointing to ./dist/proxy-stub.mjs.
  • Flatten types, import, require, and default conditions on "./proxy".
  • Add unit tests in test/proxy.test.ts covering export conditions, proxy stub behavior, and node exports.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • The proxy entry point now selects an implementation based on the runtime. Browser and other non-Node environments resolve to a stub, while Node continues to use its existing implementation. This helps the package load appropriately across supported environments, with no change to the proxy’s public API.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The ./proxy export map now routes browser and non-Node conditions to the proxy stub while retaining the Node CJS target. Tests cover export resolution and the stub and Node proxy exports.

Changes

Proxy export routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export condition routing
package.json, test/proxy.test.ts
The ./proxy export map adds explicit non-Node stub targets and top-level fallback targets. Tests assert the expected paths for runtime conditions and fallbacks.
Stub and Node proxy exports
test/proxy.test.ts
Tests check the stub’s createProxy, createFetch, and fetch values. They also check that the Node CJS proxy exports functions and that createProxy returns a defined value.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b5c3e

The export routing fixes the workerd resolution failure. TypeScript users who set custom conditions such as workerd may lose the published types for node-fetch-native/proxy until the types condition is moved first. This is a small, low-effort fix to make before or shortly after merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b5c3e

Ordinary Node resolution retains proxy support, and non-Node consumers continue to receive native fetch. However, overlapping runtime conditions now take precedence over Node and can silently select the implementation without proxy support. No affected production configuration or attacker-controlled path was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: When a resolver enables node together with any newly listed runtime condition, that runtime condition now wins and selects the proxy stub. Such consumers lose configured Node proxy routing. This could bypass proxy-based egress controls where applications rely on them, although no affected production configuration or attacker influence is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The conditional exposure concerns consumers of node-fetch-native/proxy that enable both node and a newly listed runtime condition and expect configured proxy routing. Node-only consumers retain the previous target. Production consumer count and tenant, service, or environment exposure are not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The package-resolution boundary determines whether explicit proxy URLs and environment proxy settings reach the proxy-capable implementation. Those controls remain implemented in the Node branch; the stub does not apply them.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the intended proxy contract for overlapping runtime conditions and validate it through actual package resolution. If proxy routing is mandatory for a supported configuration, verify that it cannot silently select the native-fetch stub.

Put the types condition before runtime conditions.

If a TypeScript consumer enables customConditions: ["workerd"], TypeScript matches workerd before it reaches types. It resolves ./dist/proxy-stub.mjs, which has no generated adjacent declaration, instead of ./lib/proxy.d.ts. The import then loses its published types and can fail a strict type-check. Move the top-level types condition ahead of the runtime conditions; Node will ignore that condition. TypeScript and Node both use export-key order when selecting a matching condition. (typescriptlang.org)

As per retrieved learnings, keep the package-level and export-map type declarations for consumer compatibility.
