As a user I want to shut down my computer when I click the power button

Shutting down the computer is a Window Manager's responsibility and Webian Shell ain't one. WS should just end and a WM of Webian OS should wait until it's ended and then shutdown the system, similar to: webian-shell && shutdown now

That's not a bad idea actually. Although there are going to be quite a few things (like volume controls, network configuration, setting the time & date) which wouldn't usually be taken care of by the browser, it will be interesting to explore the boundaries between window manager, desktop environment (of which there will be none) and browser.

I notice that Chromeless has the ability to execute native code if necessary, but the way in which Shell interacts with the underlying OS is something which needs exploring further.

I have been thinking about this lately and I came up with a possible solution (both to the shutdown and all of the other controls that normally wouldn't be controlled by the browser).

I think that we should fork a repo of the chromeless code and add parts to the api that allow these sorts of actions. I am currently studying the code and api to get a better feel for how mozilla labs has put everything together and should have a rough solution to this relatively soon (and I mean very rough).

This sounds interesting, how are you thinking you would interact with the OS from Shell?

I've started a wiki page about OS APIs here http://clinked.com/webian/pages/os_apis

You might also be interested to look through the proposals for new APIs in Gecko. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=673923&hide_resolved=1 These proposals are being driven by the B2G project.

Feel free to fork Shell on GitHub to experiment with your approach.

This will use the Power Management API https://wiki.mozilla.org/WebAPI/PowerManagementAPI
