Description

Fixes #20371.

Under the default per_token topology the fused attention-residual epilogue (attn_res_add_rmsnorm_fwd, attn_res_rmsnorm_fwd) was taken only for one token per rank, so speculative verify steps and multi-request decode batches ran the unfused add + attn_res_fwd + RMSNorm chain at every layer. This PR defaults KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS to 32 for every topology (it already was 32 for split / persistent, and 32 is the top of the measured window documented in the dispatch code). The per-token kernels themselves are unchanged; KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES=0 still selects the unfused path and the variable still overrides the ceiling.

Numerics: the updated prefix is bit-identical; the normalized output moves by a few bf16 ulps, exactly as for M = 1 decode, which already runs the fused kernel by default (#19182 notes that default numerical-path change).

Measured on SM107 only, with the original moonshotai/Kimi-K3 checkpoint, whose routed experts TRT-LLM runs as W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 (details in #20371): the fused ops take about half the time of the unfused chain at M = 8 / 16, and the Kimi K3 + DSpark decode step is about 0.5 ms faster at 2K-128K context with a single request (M = 8 per rank) and 0.49-0.57 ms (about 3%) faster with 2 / 4 concurrent requests (M = 16 / 32 per rank) at 2K and 32K, with unchanged acceptance and accuracy checks. Not measured: SM100 / SM103 performance, and the NVFP4 checkpoint.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/modules/kimi_k3_attn_res/test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py (in l0_b200.yml and l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml): new test_default_token_ceiling_covers_multi_token_steps checks the default ceiling, and test_model_helper_dispatches_fused_attn_res_rmsnorm gains default_ceiling cases (1 / 16 / 32 tokens, variable unset, per_token) that assert the fused op runs; the existing fused-dispatch tests at 1 / 16 / 32 tokens and the fallback tests above the ceiling (_above_ceiling_tokens(), now 33) keep covering both sides. Updated the comment that described the old default.
  • Validated end to end on SM107 (W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 routed experts): with the variable set to 32 at M = 8 (see [Performance]: Kimi K3 fused attention-residual epilogue is skipped for speculative verify steps (token ceiling defaults to 1) #20371), and as an A/B of the variable at 1 vs 32 with M = 16 / 32 (see the PR comments). The test file passed on SM107 at 5a64ea2 (44 passed, 1 existing skip; branch diff applied on a build from an earlier main); 84ccbf4 only rewords a docstring and folds the three identical parametrized default-ceiling checks into one. SM100/SM103: not run.
  • pre-commit on the changed files: clean.

PR Checklist

  • PR description clearly explains what and why.
  • PR follows the TRT-LLM coding guidelines to the best of my knowledge.
  • Test cases are provided for new code paths.
  • No API changes, no new dependencies, no CODEOWNERS changes.
  • Please check this after reviewing the above items as appropriate for this PR.

Dev Engineer Review

The fused attention-residual token ceiling now defaults to 32 for every topology. Explicit ceiling overrides and KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES=0 remain available. The per-token kernels are unchanged. Under split, the ceiling also remains the persistent-kernel handoff boundary.

No current review findings were supplied. The author reported 44 tests passed and one existing skip on SM107, using a build based on an earlier main. Performance and numerical results are author-reported. SM100, SM103, and the NVFP4 checkpoint were not tested.

QA Engineer Review

test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py adds a default-ceiling test and updates fused-dispatch coverage. Coverage includes 1, 16, and 32 tokens, fallback above the ceiling, and default-ceiling resolution. The test is listed in the GB300 and B200 CI test lists. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the changed default and dispatch behavior.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_kimi_linear.py — Verify that the default ceiling of 32 enables fused epilogues for eligible multi-token steps across topologies. Verify explicit ceiling overrides, the KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES=0 unfused path, and the split handoff boundary.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/modules/kimi_k3_attn_res/test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py — Covers default-ceiling resolution and fused dispatch within the ceiling, with fallback above it. Listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml and tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_b200.yml.

…to 32 tokens by default

Under the default per_token topology the fused attention-residual epilogue
was taken only for a single token per rank, so speculative verify steps and
multi-request decode batches ran the unfused chain at every layer. Default
KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS to 32 for every topology.

Test the cached default in an isolated import.

modeling_kimi_linear is imported before this test clears KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS, so _FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS may retain a valid pre-import override while _read_fused_attn_res_max_tokens() returns 32. An equality assertion here would reject that supported configuration instead of testing default initialization. The current dispatch test also overwrites the cached value, so an import-time default regression remains undetected.

Add a separate test that removes the variable before importing the production module in an isolated interpreter.

@coderabbitai Re the nitpick on testing the cached default in an isolated import: I'll leave this one out. _FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS is assigned directly from _read_fused_attn_res_max_tokens() at module scope, and test_default_token_ceiling_covers_multi_token_steps calls that reader after removing KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS from the environment, so it does not reject a pre-import override. A subprocess that re-imports tensorrt_llm would add a full package import to this GPU test file to check a one-line assignment.

@lucifer1004 Thanks for the clarification. The code confirms the direct module-level assignment and the test’s removal of the environment override before calling the reader. The test checks the default without rejecting a valid pre-import override.

An isolated package import adds little coverage for that assignment. I withdraw the nitpick; no additional test is needed.

Learning: In NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM, tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_kimi_linear.py assigns _FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS directly from _read_fused_attn_res_max_tokens() at module scope. In tests/unittest/_torch/modules/kimi_k3_attn_res/test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py, test_default_token_ceiling_covers_multi_token_steps removes KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS from the environment and calls the reader to check the default across topologies. This avoids rejecting valid pre-import overrides. Do not request a subprocess package import solely to test this direct assignment.

Test report (branch diff applied on a build from an earlier main, SM107, single node):

  • tests/unittest/_torch/modules/kimi_k3_attn_res/test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py at 5a64ea2: 44 passed, 1 skipped (the existing skip in that file, not related to this PR).
  • Same test file against the unpatched build: 3 failed (the two default_ceiling dispatch cases and test_default_token_ceiling_covers_multi_token_steps), as expected with the old default of 1.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

This changes default numerics and kernel selection for every Kimi K3 deployment at 2–32 tokens per rank. A few things should be on record before merge:

  • Stale docstring outside the diff. KIMI_K3_ATTN_RES_TOPOLOGY (modeling_kimi_linear.py:358-359) still describes per_token as "the default, i.e. the feature is off and behaviour is unchanged." That is no longer true at M = 2..32. Please reword it so it only says that the persistent kernel is off.
  • Quant coverage of the measurement. The same docstring explains that the persistent kernel stays opt-in because of a 2.98x context-phase regression on W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8, caused by an interaction with the TRTLLM-gen MoE. The SM107 numbers in #20371 don't say which quant they used. Please state it, and if they don't cover W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8, add a quick M = 8/16/32 decode check on that config. This PR now turns the multi-token per-token kernel on for that config too.
  • SM100/SM103. CI on B200/GB300 covers correctness. The perf claim rests on SM107 only, so please note that in the description, or add one data point from either GPU.

Correction to my previous comment: the numbers in #20371 are not from the NVFP4 checkpoint. They come from the original moonshotai/Kimi-K3 checkpoint (compressed-tensors mxfp4-pack-quantized: MXFP4 weights, group size 32, no activation quantization; attention and shared experts are in its ignore list). That checkpoint has no per-layer entries, so _resolve_routed_quant_config falls back to _K3_DEFAULT_ROUTED_QUANT_ALGO = W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 for the routed experts. Our serve logs confirm it: the routed MoE runs trtllm::mxe4m3_mxe2m1_block_scale_moe_runner on the trtllm-gen backend. Sorry for the mix-up.

So the existing data already covers W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8, for M = 8 per rank (single request, 1 + 7 draft tokens per verify step):

  • End to end, decode step -0.59 ms at 2K context and -0.53 ms at 32K and 128K. This includes a small unrelated double-add fusion worth about 0.1 ms. Acceptance was unchanged, and our accuracy checks were unchanged apart from one numerics-sensitive item that also flips between cold starts.
  • Op level, M = 8 and 16: the fused ops take about half the time of the unfused chain (synthetic bf16 inputs, so independent of the checkpoint).

Not covered: M = 16-32 end to end (decode batches > 1) on this checkpoint, and anything on the NVFP4 checkpoint. If useful, I can add a small-batch decode run (M = 16 / 32 per rank) on W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8. The 2.98x context-phase regression the docstring mentions is with the persistent kernel, which this PR keeps off.

I've fixed the PR description accordingly.

Small-batch end-to-end data, as promised: same W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 checkpoint as above, Kimi K3 + DSpark, 8-token verify steps, 2 nodes TP8, SM107. There are two cold starts that differ only in KIMI_K3_FUSED_ATTN_RES_MAX_TOKENS (1 = old default, 32 = this PR's default). Each runs 2 or 4 concurrent requests, i.e. M = 16 or 32 per rank, at 2K and 32K context, two rounds each. Only steps in which all requests are decoding are counted.

context concurrency (M per rank) decode step, ceiling 1 vs 32
2K 2 (16) +0.50 ms (+3.4%)
2K 4 (32) +0.51 ms (+3.0%)
32K 2 (16) +0.49 ms (+3.2%)
32K 4 (32) +0.57 ms (+3.2%)
  • So the new default is 0.49-0.57 ms per step faster at M = 16-32, in line with the M = 8 single-request result.
  • Acceptance length differs between the two runs by up to ±0.25 tokens per step, in both directions, which is run-to-run noise. Accuracy checks pass on both sides with the same score.
  • The outputs of the two cold starts are not token-identical (temperature 0). That is cross-process nondeterminism of this setup, not this change: earlier comparisons between two cold starts of the same configuration were also 0/8 identical.

The last CI run failed only on tests that this PR does not touch. unittest/_torch/compilation/test_phase_selective_forward.py monkeypatches moe_a2a_steady_state_budget_for_capture, which does not exist at the main commit this branch was based on; #20362 has since fixed the test on main. The other failures were fail-fast aborts (plus one H100 harmony perf-metrics timeout that passed on retry). I merged current main into the branch and am re-running CI.

CI #78353 failed only in unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/csa2/test_module.py on B200: the first test hit an illegal memory access and the following tests in that process failed at setup. This PR does not touch CSA2 or the attention tests. The same test failed the same way in another PR's pipeline (#20080) and passed in most other recent runs, so it looks intermittent. Re-running.

CI #78412 failed outside this PR again; the attn-res tests were not among the failures. It hit test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py::test_checked_in_schemas_are_current: main's checked-in serve schemas are stale since #19077, not fixed on main yet. There were also intermittent attention / DSA indexer failures with CUDA driver error: 201 (invalid device context) on B200 and H100, which fail in other PRs' pipelines too. I'll re-run once the schemas are refreshed on main.

CI #78616 (pipeline 64768, after merging main): the failures are unrelated to this PR.

  • CPU-Generic-x86-1 / CPU-Generic-arm-1: test_pytorch_model_engine.py::test_decoder_forward_routes_compile_bypass[True-*] fails with KeyType.__new__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'is_first_draft'. This is on current main: [None][chore] Remove is_first_draft dead code #19867 removed the field, but this test still passes it. The fix is part of [None][chore] Remove two-model speculative decoding leftovers #20464.
  • DGX_H100-PyTorch-1: CI classified it as transient infra (the Slurm monitor lost contact with a running job).
  • DGX_B200-PyTorch-4, which runs test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py, was aborted by fail-fast before it reached the test, so this run says nothing about the change itself.

I'll rerun once the is_first_draft test fix is on main.

Merged current main (0372799). It now waives test_pytorch_model_engine.py::test_decoder_forward_routes_compile_bypass[True-*] (#20505), the is_first_draft failure in the last run. Merging changed none of this PR's files. Rerunning CI.

CI #78858 failed outside this PR:

  • DGX_H100-PyTorch-6: infrastructure. The CI agent could not start the test job (java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "nohup": posix_spawn failed); no test ran in that stage.
  • Fail-fast then aborted the other stages. The "Test terminated unexpectedly" entries come from those aborted stages: unittest/_torch/modules/mamba/test_replay_selective_state_update.py on DGX_H100-PyTorch-4, unittest/disaggregated/test_cache_transceiver_single_process.py on DGX_H100-PyTorch-1, and unittest/_torch/attention/test_attention_backends.py on DGX_H100-PyTorch-3. None of them touches the Kimi K3 attention-residual code.
  • DGX_B200-PyTorch-4, which runs test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py, was among the aborted stages, so this run says nothing about the change itself.

Rerunning.
