[None][fix] Encode VisualGen video without a GIL-held frame copy - #20575
Conversation
The ffmpeg encoder built its stdin payload with video_np.tobytes(). The videos the pipelines return are non-contiguous, so that call is a strided copy of the whole video made while holding the GIL (about 0.6 s for a 124x544x960 clip). In trtllm-serve the encode runs in an executor thread, so the event loop answers no request, status polls included, until the copy returns. Feed ffmpeg memoryview(video_np.reshape(-1)) instead: the same C-order bytes, produced without holding the GIL. The encoded MP4 is byte-identical. readiness after recording its first interval, and wait for that signal before

Wait until the heartbeat thread has recorded its first interval before calling encode_video, so a GIL-held copy at the start of the encode cannot run before sampling begins. Signed-off-by: Yiyun Lu <55233584+luyiyun1021@users.noreply.github.com>

Per review: the comment described the removed tobytes() call, and the encoder's frame handoff is internal behavior that does not need its own unit test. Signed-off-by: Yiyun Lu <55233584+luyiyun1021@users.noreply.github.com>

_FfmpegCliEncoder.encode_videopasses a flattened NumPy array to ffmpeg throughmemoryviewinstead of callingtobytes(). This avoids creating a full byte copy before the handoff. The supplied change summary reports no other changes to the encoding or subprocess flow.QA Engineer Review

tensorrt_llm/media/encoding.py: Verify that ffmpeg receives the expected frame bytes for contiguous and non-contiguous video arrays. Also verify that encoding does not block other threads during frame handoff.Description
_FfmpegCliEncoder.encode_videobuilt ffmpeg's stdin payload withvideo_np.tobytes(). Pipelines return non-contiguous videos, so that call is a strided copy of the whole video made while holding the GIL. Intrtllm-servethe encode runs in an executor thread right after the job status turnspostprocessing, so the event loop answers no HTTP request (status polls included) until the copy returns. A client that polls for completion is stamped late by the length of the copy whenever its poll lands in that window. This PR feeds ffmpeg
memoryview(video_np.reshape(-1)): the same C-order bytes, produced without holding the GIL.Measured on GB200 with a 124x544x960x3 uint8 video, 3 runs each:
With the patched encoder in a running
trtllm-serve(MiniMax-H3, 7 requests), every status poll was answered within 0.023 s of the status change; with the stock encoder, polls that landed in the copy were answered 0.58–0.61 s late.Test Coverage
