[#15178][fix] Account for reclaimable memory in V2 KV cache sizing on integrated GPUs - #20951
For V2 on integrated GPUs, memory sizing now includes bounded reclaimable host memory. The estimate uses the larger of CUDA free memory and MemAvailable, then applies device-capacity and finite cgroup-v2 headroom bounds. CUDA free memory remains the fallback. The V1 and discrete-GPU paths retain their existing accounting.
Automatic host-tier sizing now accounts for device quotas across local ranks on shared-memory devices. PyTorch memory-fraction adjustment enables reclaimable memory only when a V2 KV-cache manager is present. The change preserves explicit caps, the configured free-memory fraction, and the live-state minimum. Current review finding counts are unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
One unit-test file was added, and two unit-test files were modified. Tests cover memory parsing and fallback, cgroup headroom, V2/integrated-GPU gating, provisional quota caps, final profiling accounting, and executor selection of the memory-fraction behavior. The searches found no matches for these test files in tests/integration/test_lists; these unit tests do not appear to require integration test-list entries.
The PR description reports CPU test coverage and DGX Spark / GB10 runtime runs on a pinned nightly image. It reports patched runs for Nemotron Nano V3 BF16 and FP8, Nemotron Nano V2 BF16, and both arms of a 31B NVFP4 regression pair. The trials used different hosts, not same-host pairs. These results are author-reported and were not independently verified. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the stated memory-sizing behavior; GPU evidence is limited to the reported image and runtime patch.

Description
On integrated GPUs such as GB10 / DGX Spark, model loading and container pulls can leave substantial host page cache in the same physical memory pool used by CUDA. In the reproduced failures, torch.cuda.mem_get_info() understates the memory available after reclamation. V2 then rejects the provisional or final KV cache quota because it cannot hold the live Mamba states, even though the workload fits when reclaimable memory is counted.
This change uses Linux MemAvailable when sizing the V2 KV cache on integrated GPUs. It adjusts all three measurements: the provisional quota, memory usage after loading weights, and memory usage after profiling. The additional headroom is bounded by device capacity and the available cgroup-v2 estimate; the existing CUDA free-memory value remains the lower bound and fallback. Explicit user caps, the configured free-memory fraction, and the live-state minimum remain in force. V1 and discrete GPUs retain their existing accounting.
Related to #15178 and #15215. The issue originally described V1's zero-token estimate. #15215 changes that V1 path; V2 bypasses it and has been the default since #17495. This PR addresses the corresponding V2 quota failure and does not replace the V1 fix.
Test Coverage
The added CPU tests cover memory-information parsing and fallback, cgroup headroom, the V2/integrated-device gate, explicit provisional caps, and final profiling accounting. They are in the existing cpu_only estimation test module, included through unittest/_torch/executor in l0_cpu.yml.
The runtime patch was tested on DGX Spark / GB10 (ARM64, one GPU), with both control and treatment pinned to nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc1.dev202610190007. The treatment changed memory accounting only. Both arms retained V2, maximum batch size 512, maximum tokens 8192, sequence length 3000, free-memory fraction 0.9, and block reuse disabled. Each successful benchmark completed five requests at input/output lengths 2000/128 and concurrency 1.

Walkthrough
KV cache V2 memory sizing now accounts for available host memory and finite cgroup headroom on integrated GPUs. The change also updates automatic host-tier quota sizing and PyTorch allocation limits.
New helpers read MemAvailable and finite cgroup headroom. The estimate falls back to CUDA free memory when host memory is unavailable, and is capped by device capacity and cgroup headroom. Tests cover parsing, cgroup paths, and estimate bounds.
Apply estimates to KV cache V2 sizing tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_estimation.py
KV cache V2 estimation and profiling use adjusted free memory on integrated GPUs. Tests cover manager and device gating, provisional quotas, user caps, and final budget calculations.
Automatic host-tier sizing uses shared-device memory availability or system memory availability. PyTorch allocation adjustment can account for reclaimable memory and clamps its limit to device capacity. Executor setup enables this option for KV cache manager V2.
The previously identified cgroup-limit sizing issue is addressed, and no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Resolve the effective cgroup limit for non-namespaced hosts.
On a bare cgroup-v2 host under systemd slices, /sys/fs/cgroup can be the hierarchy root while the process has a tighter child or ancestor limit. The helper can then return None or too much headroom, and integrated-GPU V2 sizing can exceed the process limit.
This is bounded by MemAvailable, device total, and CUDA free memory, and a private cgroup namespace may expose the process cgroup at the mount root. Scope the fix to the non-namespaced case, resolve /proc/self/cgroup, walk ancestors, and apply the tightest finite limit. Add a regression test for a child cgroup with a tighter limit than the mount root.

Addressed in 9c615ca. The shared helper now resolves the process's cgroup-v2 path from /proc/self/cgroup, checks that group and every visible ancestor through the mount root, and takes the tightest headroom using each group's own usage. It preserves the root-exposed namespace case. Regression tests cover a tighter child, parent and root, sibling usage at an ancestor, and a namespaced mount root.
Finite cgroup headroom is also now applied after the CUDA fallback, so a larger CUDA-free reading cannot override it. The 33 standalone helper tests pass locally.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The KV budget now counts reclaimable page cache, but _adjust_torch_mem_fraction (L4906) still caps PyTorch at raw mem_get_info() free + reserved. Once the larger pool has taken the free pages and part of the cache, I'd expect CUDA free on Spark to be near zero, so the headroom this sizing leaves for later torch allocations (penalty workspace, multimodal encoder reserve, decode arena) sits in page cache the fraction cap does not count. Did the Spark runs hit a lazily allocated buffer, e.g. a request with penalties? If not, should _adjust_torch_mem_fraction use the same integrated-GPU estimate?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The earlier Spark runs did not use penalties, so they did not establish coverage of that lazy allocation path. Addressed the accounting gap in 9c615ca: the final executor enables the same shared-memory estimate for _adjust_torch_mem_fraction when the resolved manager is V2 on an integrated GPU. Reserved PyTorch bytes and the 32 MiB safety margin remain accounted for, and the fraction is bounded to [0, 1]. V1 and discrete devices keep the CUDA-free source.
Added regression coverage for reclaimable headroom, restrictive cgroups, unavailable MemAvailable, device-total clamping, and the version/device gates. The selected function-body checks pass with mocked runtime imports; full-module and real Spark penalty-workspace validation remain pending. The previous GPU results should not be read as validation of this revision.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Knock-on effect on the V2 auto host tier: KVCacheManagerV2 still sizes it from SC_AVPHYS_PAGES (MemFree) and charges the device quota against it (shares_device_memory=True). With the quota sized from MemAvailable, MemFree minus quota goes negative when page cache is large, so the tier is dropped and the manager warns the user to lower free_gpu_memory_fraction. E.g. MemFree 30 GiB, cache 60 GiB, fraction 0.9: 1.5 GiB host tier on main, none with this change. Is going GPU-only intended here? If so, the two estimates should probably agree so the warning does not fire.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Going GPU-only was not intended. Addressed in 9c615ca: automatic host-tier sizing now reads the same cgroup-bounded shared-memory estimate before either cache tier is allocated, then charges the pending device quota once. Explicit host sizes, the memlock cap and cross-rank synchronization remain unchanged.
The regression for your example now gives 4.5 GiB of host cache from 90 GiB available minus an 81 GiB device quota, without the no-headroom warning. Additional cases cover a tighter cgroup, genuinely exhausted headroom, the CUDA fallback, memlock, and the unchanged discrete-device source. These function-body checks pass with mocked runtime imports; real GPU allocation and suspend/resume validation remain pending.
