[#21317][fix] trtllm-bench: fall back to system memory when NVML memory query is not supported - #21340
get_device_memory() uses NVML memory when available. If NVML raises NVMLError_NotSupported, it falls back to total system memory, capped by a readable numeric cgroup limit, and logs a warning. NVML shutdown runs in finally; other NVML errors still propagate. The change is limited to benchmark memory sizing. Cgroup lookup checks fixed v2 and v1 paths, so verify those paths match supported container configurations.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py adds four test functions, including a parametrized cgroup-limit test. Coverage includes NVML success, unsupported and other NVML errors, shutdown behavior, warning behavior, and cgroup limits, including unlimited values. No integration tests or test-list files changed; integration-list registration is not applicable to this unit test. Coverage verdict: sufficient. The supplied context reports that all 20 tests in this file passed; no independent test run is available here.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/bench/tuning/utils.py: Verify the NVML fallback, cgroup cap, warning, and shutdown behavior on success and error paths. Also verify cgroup path handling in supported deployment configurations.
tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py: Tests the NVML and fallback paths, error propagation, cleanup, logging, and cgroup limits. This is a unit test, not an integration test, so it does not require test-db/ or manual-QA list registration.
On unified-memory GPUs such as DGX Spark (GB10), NVML does not report device memory: nvmlDeviceGetMemoryInfo raises NVMLError_NotSupported (and nvidia-smi --query-gpu=memory.total prints [N/A]). trtllm-bench throughput and latency call it through tensorrt_llm/bench/tuning/utils.py::get_device_memory() from the max_batch_size / max_num_tokens heuristic (get_settings -> get_benchmark_engine_settings -> calc_engine_setting). The heuristic runs for unquantized, FP8, FP8 block-scale and NVFP4 checkpoints: on every latency run (it has no --max_batch_size / --max_num_tokens options), and on throughput runs where either flag is not passed. That includes the quick-start command in docs/source/developer-guide/perf-benchmarking.md. The benchmark then aborts before the model is loaded:
File ".../tensorrt_llm/bench/tuning/heuristics.py", line 112, in calc_engine_setting
total_gpu_memory = get_device_memory() * n_gpus
File ".../tensorrt_llm/bench/tuning/utils.py", line 30, in get_device_memory
mem_info = pynvml.nvmlDeviceGetMemoryInfo(handle)
...
pynvml.NVMLError_NotSupported: Not Supported
CI does not catch this because the only GB10 test list, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_gb10.yml, has no trtllm-bench test. The integration-test helper tests/integration/defs/conftest.py::get_device_memory already falls back to /proc/meminfo "for systems with unified memory (e.g. DGX Spark)"; the product code had no such fallback.
This PR:
catches pynvml.NVMLError_NotSupported in get_device_memory() and falls back to psutil.virtual_memory().total, capped by the cgroup memory limit when there is one (v2 memory.max, then v1 memory.limit_in_bytes; max and the v1 unlimited sentinel leave it unchanged), with a warning that says the estimate now uses system memory;
moves nvmlShutdown() into a finally, so NVML is shut down when a query raises;
leaves every other NVML error unchanged: they still propagate.
adds the NVIDIA SPDX/Apache-2.0 header that bench/tuning/utils.py was missing (per CODING_GUIDELINES.md).
Why system memory: on a unified-memory GPU the GPU allocates from system memory, so this is the pool the heuristic should size against. psutil is already a dependency (requirements.txt), avoids initializing CUDA inside this helper, and matches what the test helper above does. The alternative is torch.cuda.get_device_properties(0).total_memory, which bench/dataclasses/reporting.py and llmapi/utils.get_total_gpu_memory already use. On the GB10 used for the reproduction, psutil.virtual_memory().total, torch.cuda.get_device_properties(0).total_memory and /proc/meminfo MemTotal all read 121.69 GiB, so the fallback uses psutil. A third option is to decide by device type with the existing tensorrt_llm._utils.is_device_integrated() (also torch-based) instead of by NVML exception. I am happy to switch to either if you prefer. On unified memory either value is the whole shared pool, not memory reserved for the GPU, so when other processes already use a large part of that memory the heuristic is optimistic, the same as on a discrete GPU shared with other processes. The runtime still sizes the KV cache from the memory that is actually free.
Inside a container with a memory limit, psutil.virtual_memory().total reports the host total, so the fallback is capped at the cgroup limit (raised in the issue thread; on the GB10 a container started with docker run --memory=6g reads 6442450944 from memory.max, and the unit tests cover the max and v1 unlimited cases). One remaining limit: heuristics.py multiplies the value by n_gpus (or pp_size with attention DP), which is right for one GB10 per node (including multi-node Spark) but would overcount if several GPUs ever shared one unified pool.
Related: #20951 (open) accounts for reclaimable memory and cgroup headroom in the runtime V2 KV cache sizing on integrated GPUs. It touches only tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/, so there is no overlap with this change. If you would rather have the bench heuristic follow that accounting than use total memory, I can rework this once it lands.
Out of scope: tensorrt_llm/profiler.py and tensorrt_llm/usage/_startup.py also call nvmlDeviceGetMemoryInfo, but neither is on the trtllm-bench sizing path, and the usage module already handles failures on its own.
Test Coverage
New CPU-only unit tests in tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py (file is pytest.mark.cpu_only; unittest/others is in l0_cpu.yml). They monkeypatch the NVML calls in tensorrt_llm.bench.tuning.utils and patch psutil.virtual_memory:
test_get_device_memory_reports_nvml_total: the NVML path is unchanged; psutil is not consulted and no warning is logged.
test_get_device_memory_falls_back_when_nvml_memory_not_supported: NVMLError_NotSupported (built with pynvml.NVMLError(pynvml.NVML_ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED), so the real subclass) returns the psutil total, logs one warning with that total, and nvmlShutdown() is still called.
test_get_device_memory_shuts_down_nvml_on_other_errors: other NVML errors still raise, no warning is logged, and nvmlShutdown() is still called.
test_get_device_memory_fallback_respects_cgroup_limit (3 cases): a cgroup v2 limit below system memory caps the fallback; v2 max and the v1 unlimited sentinel do not. The cgroup file paths are patched, so the machine running the tests does not matter.
Before the fix (main's utils.py) all 6 new cases fail, because the test helper patches _CGROUP_MEMORY_LIMIT_FILES, which main's module does not have. With only that attribute added to main's module, 5 fail for the real reasons (pynvml.NVMLError_NotSupported: Not Supported in the fallback and cgroup cases, assert ['init'] == ['init', 'shutdown'] in the other-errors case) and the NVML-total case passes. Removing the cgroup cap, the warning, or the finally from the fixed module each makes exactly one case fail. After the fix all 21 tests in the file pass (the file now also has the calc_engine_setting test from [None][chore] Mass merge release/1.3 branch back to main (batch 2) #20843). These runs are CPU-only in the nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc2 container, with this branch's tensorrt_llm/bench/ (merged with main at 9badd1eb9) mounted over the installed package, because main has changed bench/ since rc2.
End to end on a DGX Spark (GB10), before the cgroup cap was added (no limit applies on that host, so the value is the same), same container with the fixed file mounted over the installed one: trtllm-bench --model Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B --model_path <snapshot> throughput --backend pytorch --dataset <8 requests, 32/32 tokens> --max_num_tokens 1024 --kv_cache_free_gpu_mem_fraction 0.1 --config caps.yaml (--max_batch_size not passed; the small KV fraction and a YAML with kv_cache_config.max_tokens: 8192 and cuda_graph_config: null only keep memory use low on a shared machine). Before: the traceback above. After: the warning below is logged once (this is the warning text at that commit; the current message reads "Using system memory (... GiB, capped by the cgroup memory limit if any) to estimate max_batch_size and max_num_tokens."), the heuristic runs on 121.69 GiB, and the benchmark completes (8/8 requests, exit code 0):
[TRT-LLM] [W] [bench] NVML does not support device memory queries for GPU 0 (e.g. unified memory on DGX Spark). Using total system memory (121.69 GiB) to estimate max_batch_size and max_num_tokens.

…L memory query is not supported
On unified-memory GPUs such as DGX Spark (GB10), nvmlDeviceGetMemoryInfo
raises NVMLError_NotSupported. The trtllm-bench max_batch_size/max_num_tokens
heuristic calls it for unquantized, FP8, FP8 block-scale and NVFP4
checkpoints: on every latency run, and on throughput runs where
--max_batch_size or --max_num_tokens is unset. The benchmark then crashes
before the model is loaded.
get_device_memory() now falls back to psutil.virtual_memory().total when
NVML reports NotSupported, logs a warning, and always calls nvmlShutdown()
via try/finally. Other NVML errors still propagate.

…he cgroup limit
Inside a container with a memory limit, the total system memory that
psutil reports can be far above what the benchmark may use. When NVML
does not report device memory, cap the fallback at the cgroup memory
limit (v2 memory.max, then v1 memory.limit_in_bytes); "max" and the v1
unlimited sentinel leave it unchanged.

get_device_memory() uses NVML memory when supported. For unsupported NVML queries, it falls back to system memory, applies a readable cgroup limit when available, and logs a warning. NVML shutdown runs in a finally block. Tests cover fallback behavior and error handling.

Summary
NVML query and system-memory fallback tensorrt_llm/bench/tuning/utils.py, tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py
The utility falls back to system memory only when NVML raises NVMLError_NotSupported. It caps the fallback using a numeric cgroup v2 or v1 limit when available, returns memory in GiB, and shuts down NVML after the query. Tests cover fallback behavior, cgroup limits, NVML shutdown, and propagation of other NVML errors.
In a nested container, the benchmark can size itself above its effective memory limit when NVML does not support the query. Address that limit lookup before merging.

This is a small, CPU-tested fix for a trtllm-bench crash on DGX Spark (GB10), where NVML's memory query returns NotSupported (repro and traceback in #21317). With an unquantized, FP8, FP8 block-scale or NVFP4 checkpoint, latency always crashes. throughput crashes when --max_batch_size or --max_num_tokens is left unset.
The fallback is psutil.virtual_memory().total, capped by the cgroup memory limit when one is set. That matches the DGX Spark workaround in tests/integration/defs/conftest.py. If you'd prefer torch.cuda.get_device_properties(0).total_memory or detection through tensorrt_llm._utils.is_device_integrated(), I'm glad to switch.

The branch now merges main (9badd1eb9) to resolve the tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py conflict with #20843 (both sides kept). The fix itself is unchanged, and the PR diff is still the same 2 files. Could a maintainer trigger /bot run when convenient? Thanks!
AI assistance: this comment and the merge were prepared with Claude Code, which also re-ran the CPU unit tests on the merged branch.
The cgroup test replaces the production path list. It can pass if the v1 path is removed or incorrect, leaving v1 containers without the memory cap. Add a case that uses the production path list, makes the v2 file unavailable, and checks that a finite v1 limit caps the result.
Test coverage summary
Added four tests in tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py: test_get_device_memory_reports_nvml_total, test_get_device_memory_falls_back_when_nvml_memory_not_supported, test_get_device_memory_shuts_down_nvml_on_other_errors, and test_get_device_memory_fallback_respects_cgroup_limit. The last test has three cases.
They cover NVML success, fallback, warning, shutdown, other errors, and cgroup limit values. The missing-file case exercises OSError continuation.
l0_cpu.yml selects the parent directory, and the module is marked cpu_only.
Coverage verdict: insufficient for the configured cgroup v1 path.

tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/, so there is no overlap with this change. If you would rather have the bench heuristic follow that accounting than use total memory, I can rework this once it lands.Out of scope:
tensorrt_llm/profiler.pyandtensorrt_llm/usage/_startup.pyalso callnvmlDeviceGetMemoryInfo, but neither is on thetrtllm-benchsizing path, and the usage module already handles failures on its own.Test Coverage
New CPU-only unit tests in
tests/unittest/others/test_bench.py(file ispytest.mark.cpu_only;unittest/othersis inl0_cpu.yml). They monkeypatch the NVML calls intensorrt_llm.bench.tuning.utilsand patchpsutil.virtual_memory:test_get_device_memory_reports_nvml_total: the NVML path is unchanged; psutil is not consulted and no warning is logged.test_get_device_memory_falls_back_when_nvml_memory_not_supported:NVMLError_NotSupported(built withpynvml.NVMLError(pynvml.NVML_ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED), so the real subclass) returns the psutil total, logs one warning with that total, andnvmlShutdown()is still called.test_get_device_memory_shuts_down_nvml_on_other_errors: other NVML errors still raise, no warning is logged, andnvmlShutdown()is still called.test_get_device_memory_fallback_respects_cgroup_limit(3 cases): a cgroup v2 limit below system memory caps the fallback; v2maxand the v1 unlimited sentinel do not. The cgroup file paths are patched, so the machine running the tests does not matter.Before the fix (
main'sutils.py) all 6 new cases fail, because the test helper patches_CGROUP_MEMORY_LIMIT_FILES, whichmain's module does not have. With only that attribute added tomain's module, 5 fail for the real reasons (pynvml.NVMLError_NotSupported: Not Supportedin the fallback and cgroup cases,assert ['init'] == ['init', 'shutdown']in the other-errors case) and the NVML-total case passes. Removing the cgroup cap, the warning, or thefinallyfrom the fixed module each makes exactly one case fail. After the fix all 21 tests in the file pass (the file now also has thecalc_engine_settingtest from [None][chore] Mass merge release/1.3 branch back to main (batch 2) #20843). These runs are CPU-only in thenvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc2container, with this branch'stensorrt_llm/bench/(merged withmainat9badd1eb9) mounted over the installed package, becausemainhas changedbench/since rc2.End to end on a DGX Spark (GB10), before the cgroup cap was added (no limit applies on that host, so the value is the same), same container with the fixed file mounted over the installed one:
trtllm-bench --model Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B --model_path <snapshot> throughput --backend pytorch --dataset <8 requests, 32/32 tokens> --max_num_tokens 1024 --kv_cache_free_gpu_mem_fraction 0.1 --config caps.yaml(--max_batch_sizenot passed; the small KV fraction and a YAML withkv_cache_config.max_tokens: 8192andcuda_graph_config: nullonly keep memory use low on a shared machine). Before: the traceback above. After: the warning below is logged once (this is the warning text at that commit; the current message reads "Using system memory (... GiB, capped by the cgroup memory limit if any) to estimate max_batch_size and max_num_tokens."), the heuristic runs on 121.69 GiB, and the benchmark completes (8/8 requests, exit code 0):pre-commit run --fileson both changed files passes (ruff, ruff-format, codespell, etc.).PR Checklist
