Summary

Adds a std::stable_sort smoke test for #6486. It covers both overloads that take an execution policy (default order and a custom comparator).

Each element carries its original position, and only the key is compared, so the test can see whether equal keys kept their order. Each parallel sort is checked against a regular std::stable_sort of the same data, positions included. It also checks that sorting an empty range changes nothing.

Testing

  • Builds and passes with MSVC (VS 2022), C++17 and C++20, /W4 /WX.
  • Fails if the sort is skipped, if the comparator is ignored, or if it's swapped for plain std::sort, which doesn't keep equal keys in order.
  • Formatted with clang-format 22.1.5 from the pre-commit config.
  • I don't have NVHPC locally, so -stdpar=gpu isn't checked yet. Relying on CI for that.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added coverage for stable sorting with duplicate values in ascending and descending order, including empty input and sequential-versus-parallel result comparisons.

Walkthrough

Adds a stdpar test that compares parallel stable-sort results with sequential results for ascending and descending key order. It also checks empty ranges and validates the configured CCCL version at compile time.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stable-sort test checks
test/stdpar/tests/stable_sort.cpp
Defines test items with duplicate keys, compares parallel and sequential results for ascending and descending order, and checks that sorting empty ranges leaves the data unchanged.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d7913

The test may miss a regression where an empty-range comparator overload changes elements outside the range. Using unsorted input and checking it against a pre-call copy would make that behavior detectable.

suggestion: Test the empty range with unsorted data.

At this point, values is already sorted by greater_key. A full-range sort by that comparator leaves it unchanged, so the final check misses that overload sorting outside the empty range. Use unsorted input and compare it with a copy made before both calls.

Suggested fix
   // Sorting an empty range must leave the data untouched
-  std::stable_sort(std::execution::par, values.begin(), values.begin());
-  std::stable_sort(std::execution::par, values.begin(), values.begin(), greater_key);
-  if (values != expected)
+  const std::vector<item> input_before_empty_range = input;
+  std::stable_sort(std::execution::par, input.begin(), input.begin());
+  std::stable_sort(std::execution::par, input.begin(), input.begin(), greater_key);
+  if (input != input_before_empty_range)

AI failure analysis

1. cuOpt compilation fails on RMM 26.12 stream APIs · 1 job

Explanation: cuOpt is compiled against RMM 26.12 from main, but its sources still use unavailable RMM stream interfaces, causing multiple CUDA and C++ objects to fail during compilation. The PR only adds `test/stdpar/tests/stable_sort.cpp`; this downstream cuOpt failure occurs before that test is involved and is likely an unrelated RAPIDS dependency transition.

Evidence:

/home/coder/cuopt/cpp/src/pdlp/distributed_pdlp/multi_gpu_engine.hpp(350): error: class "rmm::_RMM_26_12::cuda_stream" has no member "view"
/home/coder/cuopt/cpp/src/grpc/server/grpc_worker.cpp:100:30: error: 'cuda_stream_default' is not a member of 'rmm'

Failure group: cuOpt compilation fails on RMM 26.12 stream APIs
Affected jobs:
- Build RAPIDS (optional) / cuopt: https://github.com/NVIDIA/cccl/actions/runs/37425456090/job/112144108618

Investigate the optional cuOpt RAPIDS build's compatibility with RMM 26.12. Reproduce narrowly using the logged `RAPIDS_LIBS=cuopt` devcontainer command and confirm the exact RMM commit and supported stream API resolved by CMake. If cuOpt should track RMM main, migrate every failing call site: verify whether `rmm::cuda_stream` should be passed directly or converted explicitly to `cuda::stream_ref` instead of calling `.view()`, and replace `rmm::cuda_stream_default` with the supported explicit default-stream representation, likely `cuda::stream_ref{cudaStream_t{}}` with its direct header. If cuOpt must remain on the 26.10 stack, instead pin RMM and rapids-cmake consistently rather than combining the 26.10 environment with `rmm@26.12 (main)`. Implement the smallest consistent fix and run focused cuOpt C++ configure/build validation with tests both OFF and ON; do not modify the new stable-sort test unless a separate failure reproduces there.
