fix(security): secure cookies by default and unspoofable limiter keys - #455
Two deployment-hardening fixes for the panel's own HTTP surface.
Secure session cookie by default.SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE is now enabled
when neither PANEL_PUBLIC_URL nor TRUSTED_PROXY_COUNT says the panel is
served over plain HTTP. A local HTTP setup opts out explicitly with PANEL_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP=1; both bundled compose files set it for their
published :8000. An explicit PANEL_PUBLIC_URL=http://... or SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE=false still wins.
Unspoofable rate-limit keys. With trusted proxies enabled, the limiter
keys on the last X-Forwarded-For entry (the value the closest proxy
appended) instead of X-Forwarded-For[-TRUSTED_PROXY_COUNT], so an
over-counted hop number cannot let a client select its own bucket. For
multi-proxy chains the operator can name a header their edge overwrites via TRUSTED_PROXY_CLIENT_IP_HEADER (e.g. X-Real-IP); an unconfigured X-Real-IP is ignored. Without either value the proxy's own address is used
(fail-safe, never bypassable).
README.md documents both settings and the new key selection.
New regression tests cover the secure-cookie default, the explicit insecure
opt-out, the over-counted-XFF case, the configured client-IP header preference,
the proxy-address fallback, and the configuration guard that rejects the header
without TRUSTED_PROXY_COUNT.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Security
Session cookies now default to the Secure attribute, with plain-HTTP setups able to opt out using PANEL_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP.
The quickstart Compose configurations enable that opt-out for local HTTP access. For TLS deployments, configure the public HTTPS URL or disable the opt-out.
Bug Fixes
Rate limits now use a client address supplied by a trusted proxy, when available, rather than selecting an address based on the proxy count. They fall back to the direct connection address.
Documentation
Updated proxy guidance with the client-IP header and forwarded-address behavior.
…untime
The gunicorn config scanner now treats construction of a class whose implicit dunder rebinds workers (__add__, __format__, __iter__, __bool__, __contains__, __eq__ and siblings) as an import-time side effect. Those triggers bypassed the single-worker gate, so a config could run multiple workers against the in-memory limiter and session store. The Dockerfile builds its hash-pinned wheels on the same Python minor the runtime stage uses.
A subclass that inherits a mutating implicit dunder now resolves it with the same MRO and binding checks used for __new__/__init__, so 'class Child(Bump): pass; Child() + 1' is classified as dynamic instead of static.
h += 1 calls __iadd__ (falling back to __add__), so a config could rebind workers through an in-place hook while the scanner still saw the literal count. Adds the in-place operator family and a regression case.
SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE now defaults to enabled unless an HTTP URL or PANEL_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP explicitly opts out; the bundled compose files opt out for their plain-HTTP quickstart. The rate limiter keys on X-Real-IP or the proxy-appended last X-Forwarded-For entry instead of the position selected by TRUSTED_PROXY_COUNT, so an over-counted hop number cannot let a client choose its bucket.

Walkthrough
The changes update trusted-proxy rate-limit IP selection and session-cookie defaults, expand Gunicorn worker-mutation detection for implicit hooks, and align the runtime image’s Python version with the builder.
The app passes raw forwarding headers to the IP-selection function. For a trusted direct peer, selection prefers a valid X-Real-IP, then the last X-Forwarded-For entry, and otherwise uses the peer address.
Without an explicit URL scheme or cookie setting, SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE defaults to true. PANEL_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP can disable that default, and the Compose files set it for their plain-HTTP setups.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 133c6
Operators who follow the README's multi-proxy guidance and set the client-IP header in .env will find it ignored, because the bundled Compose files do not pass it to the panel. Rate limiting then groups clients behind the innermost proxy into one bucket. Add the variable to both Compose environment blocks before or shortly after merging. The cookie and limiter-spoofing hardening itself looks sound.

X-Real-IP is no longer preferred by default because a proxy may pass a client-supplied value through. The limiter uses the last X-Forwarded-For entry (proxy-appended) unless the operator names an overwritten header in TRUSTED_PROXY_CLIENT_IP_HEADER. Also corrects the quickstart TLS comment and drops a redundant test import.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Account for higher-priority cookie settings.
PANEL_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP=0 does not enable Secure when PANEL_PUBLIC_URL is an HTTP URL or SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE=false. An operator migrating from HTTP can follow this instruction and still expose the session cookie on HTTP requests. The example environment file suggests the latter setting for HTTP. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
For TLS deployments, instruct operators to set SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE=true or remove conflicting overrides.
Based on learnings: HTTPS-facing session cookies must use Secure.
