Gitea inline review comments share native comment IDs, so their edit and reaction APIs can be used directly. Enable description, issue-comment, and inline-comment reactions and inline-comment editing, with per-subject capability gates that preserve existing provider behavior. Review-summary reactions stay disabled on stock Gitea; their native server API is RTVision/gitea#1.

Validation: 61 focused tests and contracts/web typechecks passed in the feature worktree. Integrated browser tests passed for description/comment reaction creation, persistence across reload, reaction removal, and comment editing after the response-decoding fixes in #32. The follow-up passed 65 focused tests and targeted lint; CodeRabbit reviewed its final commit with no findings. Before/after UI evidence: #9 (comment).

Final stack validation at 256fd6fe5: 228 focused tests passed, followed by 61 API/workflow cases and the final team-recovery regression; server typecheck and targeted lint passed. The live settle-on-merge E2E previously passed with fixture cleanup. Companion Gitea backend and focused integration tests passed, including native revert across all five merge styles.

Model: GPT-5.6 Terra (medium), integration review GPT-6 Astra. Harness: Codex.

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Gitea now supports reactions on pull requests, issue comments, and inline review comments. The change adds subject-specific capabilities, reaction listing and mutation APIs, provider activity wiring, comment editing support, and event-specific reaction controls in the web interface.

Changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subject-specific reaction contracts
packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.ts, packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.test.ts
Adds reaction subject types, granular capabilities, pullRequestCanReact, and tests for legacy and subject-specific behavior.

Gitea server integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gitea reaction parsing and API operations
apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaConversation.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaConversation.test.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaPullRequestApi.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaPullRequestApi.test.ts
Parses Gitea reaction targets, maps native reaction names, groups viewer-aware reactions, lists reactions by subject, edits supported comments, and mutates pull request or comment reactions.
Provider activity and service enforcement
apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaPullRequestProvider.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestService.ts
Declares supported reaction subjects, loads reactions into activity data, and validates reaction targets before mutation.

Web reaction controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subject-aware reaction controls
apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestSummaryTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestTimelineTab.tsx
Uses pullRequestCanReact to control reaction visibility and actions for each pull request event type.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6fecd

A temporary failure in Gitea's viewer or reaction endpoints can prevent pull-request activity from rendering. Make reaction enrichment optional before merging.

Real integrated conversation checks against a temporary Gitea test pull request, including the response-decoding fixes in #32. The images show before and after adding reactions, then preservation of the comment reaction after removing the description reaction.

Before adding reactions:

Gitea pull request before adding a reaction

After adding description and comment reactions, then reloading:

Description and comment reactions persist after reload

After removing the description reaction:

Comment reaction remains when description reactions are empty

Comment editing and reaction removal also passed. Temporary test comments and reactions were removed after verification.

The missing #8 lifecycle follow-ups are restored in rtvision, with regression tests. The integration includes 3c866b6f6 (timeline pagination based on next-link/page-size evidence instead of page-length X-Total-Count) and 92761803a (a failed timeline read yields unknown auto-merge state rather than failing PR details). It also includes #32's native reaction decoding fix.

The original branch is unchanged. Preserve all three corrections when preparing this feature for upstream; the standalone branch still omits them. The earlier integration blocker is cleared on rtvision.

Integration: a3ad93268, tree 9e13dd0812b8743ef76d4b8adca2f683317fc9e5. All original feature branches are preserved. Implementation/review: Codex (GPT-6); independent approval for the exact commit and rtvision destination: Claude Fable 5.1 through Claude CLI.

Both missing lifecycle follow-ups (3c866b6f6 and 92761803a) are now retained by ancestry in the dedicated combined dependency/Gitea follow-up #36 at 1e97a3c73, along with #32. The resolution preserves next-link/page-size timeline pagination and the unknown auto-merge fallback when timeline reads fail. Focused lifecycle/API/provider tests and server/web/desktop typechecks pass at the integrated tip. Your original conversation and Gitea branches remain unchanged; this carries the fixes forward in the combined integration series.

Merge verdict: NO-GO (review gates incomplete).

Head: 51cfc1ce45891a26145ebf142dee41dfa1c9ec78.

  • Codex: NO-GO for merging under the requested two-reviewer gate. Merge readiness and review history were checked; the full dual code review is incomplete, and this comment is not a code approval.
  • Fable 5.1 / Claude CLI: BLOCKED. The requested claude-fable-5-1 review was attempted, but the CLI reached its session limit before returning a completed verdict. Its reported reset is midnight America/Chicago. There is no fresh Fable GO from this pass.
  • CodeRabbit: No formal APPROVED review. The successful CodeRabbit status check does not satisfy the requested approval gate. This branch has not enabled reviews.request_changes_workflow; the existing CodeRabbit replies on this series identify that configuration as preventing formal approvals.
  • GitHub merge state: MERGEABLE / CLEAN against gitea/lifecycle.
  • Checks: the current rollup contains a successful CodeRabbit status only; it contains no build/test check result. No new tests or browser verification are claimed by this audit.

Confirmed code blocker at apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaConversation.ts:9-11,69-71: native reaction rows contain content, but this head reads reaction and silently drops those rows on refresh. Carry the native-shape and empty-response corrections from #32 into the reviewed slice or merge the validated combined integration. This is the existing standalone-slice problem, not a new finding against the integrated tip.

No merge performed. Resume the independent code reviews when Fable is available, obtain the missing/current CodeRabbit approval where applicable, and recheck the exact head and base before merging.

@coderabbitai review

The maintainer requests formal approval for the remaining PRs. Please assess the exact current head 51cfc1ce45891a26145ebf142dee41dfa1c9ec78 and submit APPROVED only if your review has no remaining blockers. If there is a blocker, leave its concrete reason and the fix required instead. A successful status check alone does not meet this merge gate.

Known NO-GO reason to verify: The original slice still decodes reaction instead of native content; #32 contains the correction. Please do not approve while it remains unresolved.

If branch configuration prevents formal approval, please state that explicitly. Independent Codex/Fable code verdicts are being refreshed separately; this request does not authorize merging or bypassing their findings.

@kalvenschraut I reviewed exact HEAD 51cfc1ce45891a26145ebf142dee41dfa1c9ec78.

I cannot approve this pull request.

Blocker — native Gitea reactions disappear after a refresh

apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaConversation.ts expects reaction in RawGiteaReaction on Line 10. reactionsForViewer also reads row.reaction on Line 70. Native Gitea reaction endpoint rows use content.

As a result, a valid row such as { content: "+1", user: ... } is decoded without a usable reaction value and is silently skipped. Description reactions and comment reactions do not load after activity refresh.

Update the decoder and grouping logic to use content. Update apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaConversation.test.ts and the API tests to use native { content: ... } response rows. Include a regression test that verifies persisted reactions load from native Gitea response data.

I did not submit an approval. The prior conversation states that this repository configuration prevents formal approvals.

Merge verdict: NO-GO. This supersedes the earlier quota-only readiness comment.

Reviewed head: 51cfc1ce45891a26145ebf142dee41dfa1c9ec78; declared destination: gitea/lifecycle.

  • Codex: NO-GO. GiteaConversation.ts:10,70 decodes/groups reaction, but native response rows contain content. Persisted description/comment reactions disappear on refresh. Carry the decoder and native-response regression tests from fix(pull-requests): decode native Gitea reactions #32.
  • Fable 5.1 / Claude CLI: GO, completed independent review of 51cfc1ce4589.
  • CodeRabbit: No formal GitHub APPROVED review on this head. Approval was requested. Some bot replies say “Approved” or contain [approve], but the GitHub review records do not contain an approval; this does not pass the requested gate. The original branch configuration does not enable reviews.request_changes_workflow.

Where Fable returned GO, the concrete Codex blocker above still prevents merging. The follow-up request to reconcile findings hit the CLI session limit; no revised Fable verdict is claimed.

Validation: 339 focused integrated PR tests plus 502 cross-provider tests passed at integration head 6114cf39; the integrated server typecheck passed. These checks validate the integrated implementation, not every earlier PR snapshot. The original #12 compiler failure was reproduced separately.

No merge is authorized while any blocker or required approval is outstanding. Recheck the resulting head and current base after corrections or stack merges.

NO-GO now — reaction and read-bound fixes required

Reviewed commit: 51cfc1ce45891a26145ebf142dee41dfa1c9ec78.

The standalone implementation reads reaction data from reaction, while native Gitea returns content; reactions disappear after refresh. It also needs the bounded per-subject reaction reads from #11. Fable gives conditional GO with #32 and #11; Codex holds this head.

Include #32’s native reaction decoding and #11’s read bounds, along with their necessary type fixes, then re-review the resulting candidate. The current native-stack prefix is not cleared for merging.

Validation by Codex: the exact #36 integration head 6114cf39dac017bd665908effd538e5f4f8d5764 passed 1,002 tests across 39 affected files, scoped server/web/desktop typechecks, and targeted lint (warnings, no errors). These are integration results, not a claim that this standalone head passed those checks. Fable independently reviewed source and diffs via Claude CLI; it did not run the tests.

Reviewers: Codex and Claude Fable 5.1 (Claude CLI).

@coderabbitai review

Please independently review the newly pushed fixes at c89eeb0af8dbfa5738198369cdd5b7c813ad5925 and submit a formal GitHub approval on this head only if no blockers remain. Otherwise report the remaining actionable findings. The maintainer requested fresh CodeRabbit approval before merging; an older approval or a green skipped-review status does not satisfy that gate. Codex and Claude Fable 5.1 are separately re-reviewing the changes, including the prior no-go findings in this PR.

@kalvenschraut I reviewed commit c89eeb0af8dbfa5738198369cdd5b7c813ad5925.

I cannot approve this commit.

Blocker — reaction reads can repeat 100 requests for each conversation subject

apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaPullRequestApi.ts on Line 1367 sets each reaction target to PAGE_SIZE * MAX_PAGINATION_PAGES. This permits 100 pages, or 5,000 rows, for each subject. Line 1368 does not set requirePaginationEvidence.

If a Gitea reaction endpoint ignores page and returns an unpaginated full page of 50 rows, readUnknownSlice treats the response as another page. It repeats the request up to 100 times for that subject. The provider passes every loaded issue and inline-review comment as a subject on Lines 236-241 of apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaPullRequestProvider.ts. The total request count can therefore grow substantially for one activity refresh.

Use the bounded conversation-read policy for reactions. Limit each reaction target to the intended conversation-page bound, such as PAGE_SIZE * CONVERSATION_PAGES. Set requirePaginationEvidence: true so a full response without a next link or total count does not repeat.

Add regression tests for both conditions:

  1. A full unpaginated reaction response does not request page 2.
  2. A reaction list with pagination evidence stops at the configured conversation bound and does not issue more requests.

The previous native response decoding defect is fixed. RawGiteaReaction now reads content on Line 10 of apps/server/src/pullRequest/GiteaConversation.ts. The new native-shape tests also cover this path.

I did not submit an approval because this blocker remains.

Re-review: NO-GO — native comment reactions repeat and disappear

Reviewed head: c89eeb0af8dbfa5738198369cdd5b7c813ad5925. This updates my earlier go/no-go comment for the newly pushed repairs.

The native Gitea v1.27.3 comment-reaction handler is unpaginated and supplies no total-count header. The current reader assumes more pages for a full response. A focused reproduction on #36 returned commentReads:100 and an empty reaction list for a comment with 50 reactions. The same reader is in this head and #11; the earlier suggestion that #11 fixes the page bound was incorrect. Codex, Fable, and CodeRabbit now all give NO-GO on this behavior.

Fable 5.1: NO-GO after checking the native comment-reaction handler; the earlier GO is withdrawn.

Handle the native unpaginated comment endpoint without repeating or discarding its response; keep bounded, evidence-aware pagination for endpoints that support it. Add a 50-reaction comment regression. Source: Gitea v1.27.3 handler.

Validation by Codex: 308 focused tests across 9 files passed on integration head 73dd9c33ab15db71748beb6f0485ec212e6682f8; scoped server, web, and client-runtime typechecks passed, and targeted lint of 21 changed files passed with warnings. A separate single-worker reproduction exposed the native comment-reaction bug (100 reads and no reactions for a 50-reaction comment). These are integration results, not a claim that every standalone head passed the checks. Fable reviewed source and diffs through Claude CLI; it did not run tests.

The remaining native-stack merges must clear their predecessors and the actual target branch. CodeRabbit’s commit-specific comments are distinguished from formal GitHub review records; rate-limited requests are not approvals.

GO — merged after Codex, Fable 5.1, and CodeRabbit review.

Reviewed head: b120bd9fa5f040c8cbde97e4e69fd7f23b701362. This supersedes my previous decision on the older head.

Native comment reactions now use one unpaginated read. Regressions cover 50, 200, and 201 reactions; paginated issue reactions retain an evidence-aware bound. The previous 50-reaction reproduction now passes.

CodeRabbit reviewed every exact head and cleared the combined integration. Its commit-specific approval is recorded in that comment; this is not a claim of a new formal GitHub APPROVED review on each PR. All three reviewers require #26 to land with #27 or later; they merged together in the dependency batch.

Validation by Codex: 490 focused tests across 13 files passed on integration head 2e156ad621fb32b241abd4614a367aea7943d12e, including the previously failing native comment-reaction reproduction. Scoped server, web, and client-runtime typechecks passed; targeted lint of 24 changed files passed with warnings. Checks ran sequentially with one test worker. These validate the integration, not separate test runs on every component head. Fable independently reviewed source and diffs via Claude CLI.

Merged: f787a611cffccbdf0fd5e593bba8f615c607f532 at 2026-09-08T04:42:47Z. This PR merged in the 17-member Gitea batch into rtvision; the six dependency PRs followed as one reviewed batch. Final rtvision commit is 20926b20ed4ea72618f7608f70b1d4cea8e40053; its tree 9a0e0253b515456f6a117be5ebccf2cd8e911b01 exactly matches tested integration head #36.
