Deleting files/directories fails (Debian x64) #3491
Description
Activity
You wouldn't happen to be trying to delete files on NFS network shares, would you?
Possible duplicate of #3306
No it's just local files
Any permissions issues by any chance? Can you delete the files from command line (under the same session and without sudo)?
Nope.. I created a file from command line, and one from atom (thinking maybe atom creates files with wrong permissions) and both files had permissions 644 (-rw-r--r--). Opened up atom from that same command line session (
atom .) and tried deleting both files, nothing... then I triedrm file1 file2from command line and files were gone.So my next guess would be that you have a package running which locks files or entire folders.
Can you try the same thing you just did, but start atom withatom --safeinstead (which disables all packages)?I should also say that deleting files from the sidebar worked for me around version 0.114. I don't exactly know the versions I have been using, but I do know that it worked. Back then there was also an option to completely delete files (instead of sending to trash).
I've tried that, but I expected that would not be it, because I can delete the files from command line with atom still running. Too bad I was right...
After some searching, I found in atom-shell the shell.MoveItemToTrash method. It seems (though I'm not entirely certain, I don't know a lot about C++) that it tries to call a program/command called gvfs-trash (platform_util_linux.cc, line 69) which I do not have installed on my machine.
After installing the gvfs-bin package from apt, removing files worked again!@olmokramer Thanks for that information! I think that should be interesting to @zcbenz. Looks like this may be a bug which, although it needs to be confirmed / replicated, could need some fixing.
Not a problem at all. I'll create an issue over at the atom-shell repo about this. Then this issue can be closed.
Gracias 👍
I can confirm this issue. It happens if files can't be moved to trash, because they're for example on another partition.
The related
atom-shellissue electron/electron#637 was closed with the recommendation to install thegvfs-trashtool (gvfs-binpackage for Debian). You still can't delete files that can't be moved to trash. Those files can't be deleted in the file manager either, but they can be deleted there using
shift + del. Times ago, atom had an option to delete files directly without moving them to trash, but unfortunately that option has been removed.Yeah, I know. I filed a pull request for permanent delete option here: atom/tree-view#262
It probably needs to be rewritten though, because it's using old APIs i think.
@kelunik @olmokramer #2897 has links to all the background on why the delete option was removed. I think you may have seen all of this, but I wanted to be sure and to point anyone else reading these posts in the right direction.
Thanks!
@lee-dohm I can understand those arguments, but that doesn't change my opinion.
When I try do delete any file in
/var/www(which is owned by me) in nautilus, I get an error sound using thedelkey. Using the context menu → delete results in a dialog asking if I want to remove the file permanently. Those are files that can't be moved to trash and should thereby get an delete directly option. It's fine if only files that can't be moved to trash get this option.
@kelunik I understand and I wasn't trying to change your opinion, just giving you and anyone else who finds this conversation all the information.

Deleting files from the right-click menu in the sidebar fails to actually delete the file. After clicking "delete" in the menu, the dialog pops up asking me if I want to move the file/dir to the trash. So I click "Move to trash" and then nothing happens. The file is still visible in the sidebar, and it still exists on my filesystem.
I'm on Linux (Debian) x64, Atom version 0.126, but I had the same problem with 0.124 and 0.123
