ci: publish and attest the Guix SHA256SUMS of release tags - #7998
CI already Guix-builds every release tag, but only keeps per-host artifacts. Nothing checkable comes out of it that can be compared with the guix.sigs attestations.
What was done?
For v* tags pushed to dashpay/dash (never forks, PRs or schedules), a new attest job in guix-build.yml:
Combines the per-host SHA256SUMS.part files into <version>/dashcore-ci/noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS, using contrib/guix/guix-attest. The format is therefore exactly that of the guix.sigs files, and only a build versioned exactly after the tag is found.
Attests that file with actions/attest, a keyless Sigstore attestation tied to this workflow and tag. No signing key exists, so no person can hold one.
Uploads the file as the guix-sigs-v<version> artifact.
Tag builds also skip the depends-sources and Guix/depends caches. Labelled pull_request_target runs can write them, and since a cache entry can restore files to any path in the workspace, an attested release build must not read them. The v23.1.10 tag build had no cache hit anyway.
The only setup needed is a tag ruleset that restricts creating, updating and deleting v* tags to release managers. The attestation proves "built by this workflow for tag vX", so it is only as strong as control over who can push that tag.
To verify a release, download the artifact and run:
Format: I ran the job's script on fragments rebuilt from guix.sigs 23.1.9/pasta. The output was byte-identical to noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS, and a version mismatch failed.
On GitHub-hosted runners: I pushed a throwaway annotated tag to a fork, with fake 3-host build outputs, the real upload step and this attest job (with the repository gate removed). The run passed. gh attestation verify --signer-workflow … --source-ref … accepted the published file and rejected a modified copy.

Walkthrough
Tag builds skip restoration of dependency-source and Guix/depends caches. Each matrix build uploads its SHA256SUMS.part fragment. For eligible version-tag pushes, the workflow combines the fragments, generates and attests noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS, and uploads the signatures directory. The release documentation adds a command to verify the artifact’s attestation against the repository, workflow, and release-tag source ref.
The verification command fails unless users adjust the file path or working directory. The change is otherwise mergeable with this documentation correction.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the combined reviewer findings against head 398d76b. Release-cache isolation remains incomplete: the sources cache can restore files outside its configured directory, allowing PR-writable cache contents to reach newly signed release outputs. Static review only; current CI has passing lint and formatting checks, source-build checks remain pending, and no failed code checks were reported.
Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The workflow adds substantial CI behavior for release attestations and automated signature publication, but CI and build changes do not meet the specified critical-tier bar.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `.github/workflows/guix-build.yml`:
- [BLOCKING] .github/workflows/guix-build.yml:127-128: Exclude the depends-sources cache from release-tag builds too
Tag builds still restore this cache from the default-branch namespace that labelled `pull_request_target` runs can write. Dependency source hashes do not make that safe: the bundled `actions/cache@v5` implementation extracts the outer archive with `tar -xf ... -P -C <workspace>` without confining archive members to `dash/depends/sources`. PR-controlled code can publish a crafted archive using the publicly computable sources-cache version and a matching `depends-sources-` key, containing files such as a poisoned `dash/depends/built` package and its matching `.hash`. When a release selects that entry through an exact miss and prefix fallback, those ignored build-cache files are restored despite the restriction on the separate Guix/depends cache. Source-tarball verification does not authenticate these built packages, and the new attestation job can sign the resulting outputs. Apply the tag exclusion to this cache as well, or use a release cache namespace that PR runs cannot populate.
In `doc/release-process.md`:
- [NITPICK] doc/release-process.md:116: Document dashcore-ci as the default rather than the fixed signer name
The workflow derives the signer directory from `GUIX_SIGS_SIGNER`, falling back to `dashcore-ci`, but this paragraph presents `${VERSION}/dashcore-ci/...` as unconditional. With the supported custom-signer configuration, that path does not exist in the artifact or guix.sigs PR. Describe the layout as `${VERSION}/${SIGNER}/noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS{,.asc}` and state that the signer defaults to `dashcore-ci` and can be overridden with `GUIX_SIGS_SIGNER`.

changed the title
ci: attest to Guix release builds like a guix.sigs signer
ci: publish and attest the Guix SHA256SUMS of release tags
Oct 31, 2026
CI Guix-builds every release tag but only keeps per-host artifacts, so
its result can't be compared with guix.sigs.
On v* tags pushed to dashpay/dash, combine the per-host SHA256SUMS.part
files with contrib/guix/guix-attest into a guix.sigs-format
noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS. Attest it with a keyless Sigstore attestation
(tied to this workflow and the tag) and upload it as an artifact. No
signing key is stored anywhere.
Tag builds no longer restore the depends-sources or Guix/depends caches,
which labelled pull_request_target runs can write (any cache entry can
plant arbitrary workspace files).

CI also Guix-builds each release tag and publishes its `noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS` as the `guix-sigs-v${VERSION}` artifact of the `Guix Build` run, with a Sigstore attestation. Verify it, then compare it with the guix.sigs attestations or check binaries against it:

Extracting the artifact produces ${VERSION}/dashcore-ci/noncodesigned.SHA256SUMS. The command fails unless the user moves the file or changes directories. Document the download step and use the extracted path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The complete diff at the exact reviewed head contains no verified actionable defects, and both prior findings are fixed. Current CI has passed lint and formatting, while builds remain pending; the failed predict_conflicts check concerns merge prediction rather than code validation. This was a static review and does not establish a successful release-tag execution.
Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The workflow adds release attestation, artifact aggregation and cache isolation logic requiring substantive review, but CI changes do not qualify as critical.
