Basic explanation

What this does: The DashPay contract checks contact requests and profiles with two hand-written data triggers (code in Drive, outside the contract). From protocol version 15 (Platform 5.1) the new DashPay contract v3 states those same checks in its own schema, using the keywords 4.2 and 5.0 added, and the two triggers are switched off. It also states how the two encrypted contact request fields are encrypted, so consensus can refuse bytes of the wrong shape and wallets can read the recipe from the contract.

Value: DashPay's rules live in the contract, where wallets, SDKs and explorers can read them, instead of in Drive code. Two more Drive code paths stop running at 5.1. Contact requests whose encrypted label is not an IV plus whole AES blocks are now refused instead of stored and silently dropped by the recipient.

Risks: Medium-low. It is a consensus change at protocol version 15, which has not shipped. The upgrade replaces DashPay v2 with v3 without the contract update checks (as the upgrade to v2 did), so a changed property encoding would misread stored documents; v3 only adds declarations, a test pins that every v1 and v2 property is stored as before, and an upgrade test reads v2 documents back unchanged. Clients that match on the old DataTriggerConditionError messages see new error codes.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Protocol version 14 shipped in 5.0.0 with DashPay v2 unchanged, so this PR no longer edits v2 in place: it adds DashPay v3 at protocol version 15 (5.1).

The DashPay contactRequest create trigger checked that the recipient is not the sender and that the recipient identity exists. The profile create and replace trigger checked that each DIP-33 payment address starts with type byte 0x00 (P2PKH) or 0x01 (P2SH). The schema language can now say all three: distinctFrom, refersTo (identity) and the propertyConstraints byteAt operand from #5336.

What was done?

DashPay contract v3 (packages/dashpay-contract/schema/v3/dashpay.schema.json, selected by SYSTEM_DATA_CONTRACT_VERSIONS_V4):

"toUserId": {
  "type": "array", "byteArray": true, "minItems": 32, "maxItems": 32,
  "contentMediaType": "application/x.dash.dpp.identifier",
  "refersTo": { "type": "identity" },
  "distinctFrom": "$ownerId"
},
"encryptedPublicKey": {
  "type": "array", "byteArray": true, "minItems": 96, "maxItems": 96,
  "encryptedFor": {
    "recipient": "toUserId", "recipientKey": "recipientKeyIndex",
    "senderKey": "senderKeyIndex", "scheme": "ecdh-secp256k1-aes256-cbc"
  }
},
"senderKeyIndex":    { "type": "integer", "minimum": 0, "maximum": 4294967295 },
"recipientKeyIndex": { "type": "integer", "minimum": 0, "maximum": 4294967295 }
  • encryptedAccountLabel carries the same encryptedFor. The maximum bounds are what encryptedFor requires of a key id; DashPay keeps sized integer types off, so both indexes are still stored as i64.
  • profile gains two rules:
    "propertyConstraints": {
      "corePaymentAddressType": { "in": [{ "byteAt": ["corePaymentAddress", 0] }, [0, 1]] },
      "platformPaymentAddressType": { "in": [{ "byteAt": ["platformPaymentAddress", 0] }, [0, 1]] }
    }
    A profile without an address reads its byte 0 as 0, so the rule holds, as the trigger skipped an absent address.
  • The corePaymentAddress and platformPaymentAddress descriptions name the rule that now holds the type byte instead of the data trigger; shieldedAddress keeps v2's description.

Wiring

Before and after, protocol version 14 vs 15:

contact request to oneself
  14: DataTriggerConditionError (40500) "Identity <id> must not be equal to owner id"
  15: DocumentPropertyNotDistinctError (10419) contactRequest.toUserId distinct from $ownerId

contact request to an identity that does not exist
  14: DataTriggerConditionError (40500) "Identity <id> doesn't exist"
  15: ReferencedEntityNotFoundError (40120) identity <id>, path toUserId

encryptedAccountLabel of 50 bytes (within 48..80, not an IV plus whole blocks)
  14: accepted
  15: InvalidEncryptedPropertyShapeError (10420)

profile corePaymentAddress starting with 0x02, on create or replace
  14: DataTriggerConditionError (40500) "corePaymentAddress must start with address type byte ..."
  15: DocumentPropertyConstraintViolatedError (10422) rule corePaymentAddressType

All of these are paid consensus errors.

Left out on purpose

  • Checks on the two keys (identityProperty on senderKeyIndex / recipientKeyIndex, so both keys must exist and not be disabled). A key id with a reference is always stored as a u32, and DashPay stores its key indexes as i64: the upgrade would misread every stored contact request. It needs that type stored at the contract's integer width first.
  • keyRequirements on the keys: the testnet census found mobile wallets use an unbound ENCRYPTION key for both indexes, and purpose takes one value.
  • contactInfo: encToUserId is AES-256-ECB and privateData CBC under a BIP32-derived key; neither is the scheme encryptedFor knows.
  • The per-contact encryptedShieldedAddress field (DIP-33 amendment, docs: add DIP-33 (DashPay payment addresses) dips#188): it belongs in v3 too, but in its own PR; v3 is unreleased, so that PR can extend it in place.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • rs-dpp system_data_contracts::dashpay_v3_tests: v3 registers under full validation at the latest version; every property DashPay v1 (protocol 13) and v2 (protocol 14) declares has the same stored encoding in v3; the parsed contract carries the identity reference, distinctFrom, both encryptedFor declarations and both byteAt rules.
  • drive-abci batch/tests/document/dashpay_v3.rs, end to end through process_raw_state_transitions at protocol versions 14 and 15: a valid contact request; one to oneself, to a missing identity, and with a 50-byte label; a profile address with a bad type byte on create and on replace.
  • drive-abci creation.rs should_enforce_profile_payment_address_type_bytes now runs at 14 (trigger) and 15 (rule).
  • drive-abci test_protocol_change_v14_to_v15_upgrades_dashpay_and_keeps_v2_documents_readable: a profile with both addresses, a contact request (with an accountReference above u32) and a contact info stored at 14 read back unchanged under v3 after the upgrade, and the stored contract is v3.
  • Pins at the latest version that move with the contract: the DashPay contract fees in check_tx (registration processing fee 24,004,476,710 -> 24,004,855,740 credits, its fee-multiplier variant 24,008,953,420 -> 24,009,711,480, update 29,005,214,590 -> 29,005,647,760, and the invalid create and update validation fees 346,680 -> 346,830 and 448,660 -> 448,810), the protocol version 15 root hash in rs-drive/tests/deterministic_root_hash.rs, and the nullifier batch guard's settled roots (its validation hashes are unchanged).
  • Fixtures: the deletion and replacement contact requests get a 48-byte label (replacement from 15 only, so its 13 and 14 fee pins stay), the check_tx profile gets valid addresses, and should_reject_a_duplicate_payment_before_its_failing_trigger_without_charging_the_trigger now fails a DPNS domain create's billed parent lookup, since no DashPay trigger runs at 15.
  • Local runs, all passing: drive-abci lib filtered to every test touching DashPay (dashpay, check_tx, contract_bound_auth, contract_group_bound_auth, key_limits, nullifier_batch_guard, id_reuse, identity_update, identity_create_from_shielded_pool, deletion_tests, replacement_tests, transition_to_version_15); rs-dpp lib filtered (system_data_contracts, registration_cost, validation_schema, native_schema, dashpay, 124 tests); rs-drive deterministic_root_hash, dashpay, drive_storage_ops_coverage. Not run locally: clippy and the full suites (CI).

In-place changes to shipped generations

None. DashPay v3, data trigger bindings 3, SYSTEM_DATA_CONTRACT_VERSIONS_V4, DRIVE_ABCI_VALIDATION_VERSIONS_V11 and transition_to_version_15 are selected only by protocol version 15, which has not shipped. DashPay v2 and bindings 2 are untouched. This branch's earlier edits to them (protocol version 14, before it shipped in 5.0.0) were superseded by the merge of v5.1-dev.

Breaking Changes

Consensus change at protocol version 15 (unreleased): contact requests with an account label or public key that is not an IV plus whole AES blocks are refused, and the errors for a contact request to oneself or to a missing identity, and for a profile address with an unknown type byte, change code as listed above. Clients that match on the old DataTriggerConditionError messages must match the new errors.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • DashPay v3 adds validation for contact requests, requiring a different, existing recipient identity and correctly formatted encrypted fields. Profile payment-address type values are also restricted.
    • Protocol version 15 applies the updated DashPay contract and preserves existing profile, contact request, and contact information documents during the upgrade.
    • DashPay-specific data-trigger checks are removed in protocol version 15; the corresponding validation is enforced by contract rules instead.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on DashPay validation rules and how they differ across protocol versions.

DashPay v2's contactRequest now states in its schema what consensus checks,
using the PV14 keywords, instead of a hand-written data trigger:

- toUserId: distinctFrom "$ownerId" (no request to oneself) and an
  identityPublicKey refersTo naming recipientKeyIndex (the recipient
  identity exists, holds that key, and the key is not disabled; the
  trigger only checked the identity).
- encryptedPublicKey / encryptedAccountLabel: encryptedFor with the
  ecdh-secp256k1-aes256-cbc scheme, so wallets read the recipe from the
  contract and consensus refuses bytes that are not an IV plus whole
  AES blocks. senderKeyIndex / recipientKeyIndex gain maximum u32::MAX,
  which encryptedFor requires; DashPay keeps sizedIntegerTypes off, so
  both are still stored as i64.
- Data trigger bindings 2 (PV14 only) drop the contact request trigger.

The three new profile address fields lose their schema descriptions to
keep the stored contract small; their formats move to a code comment.

DashPay v2 replaces v1 in place at the PV14 upgrade without the contract
update checks, so new tests pin that every v1 property keeps its stored
encoding, run the registration checks system contracts skip, and read v1
contact documents back unchanged across the upgrade.

DashPay contract v3 moves the recipient and payment-address checks from data triggers into the contract schema at protocol version 15. For a short window around the upgrade block, mempool admission can accept invalid contact requests, but block execution still refuses them and stores nothing. The change is mergeable with that known gap tracked as a follow-up.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified that base 939b235 and head 11c7ebc reference the identical tree, 734281f04121174c4fe8adad80e47bffb9db0cf7; both the direct and merge-base diffs are empty, confirming the reviewers' no-findings conclusions. The merge superseded the earlier PV14 edits, so the contact-request declarations described in the PR body are not present at this head. Current CI shows build/test jobs skipped and PR Hygiene failing with configuration-error, a workflow-policy failure rather than a code-check failure; this static approval applies only to the empty reviewed range, not to the described feature.

…(PV15)

From protocol version 15 the DashPay contract v3 states in its schema what
its two data triggers checked, and data trigger bindings 3 stop running
them:

- contactRequest.toUserId refers to an identity (refersTo) other than the
  writer (distinctFrom "$ownerId"): 40120 and 10419 instead of the
  trigger's 40500.
- encryptedPublicKey and encryptedAccountLabel declare encryptedFor
  (ecdh-secp256k1-aes256-cbc between senderKeyIndex and recipientKeyIndex),
  so each must be an IV plus whole AES blocks (10420); both key indexes gain
  the u32 maximum it requires and stay stored as i64.
- profile rules corePaymentAddressType and platformPaymentAddressType hold
  each DIP-33 address's first byte to 0x00 or 0x01 (byteAt, 10422).
- The three profile address descriptions move to a code comment.

transition_to_version_15 re-stores DashPay with apply_contract, which runs
no contract update checks, so v3 only adds declarations: a test pins that
every v1 and v2 property keeps its stored encoding, and an upgrade test
reads v2 documents back unchanged under v3. Bindings 3 are v2 without the
DashPay bindings. v15 changelog note 14.

Tests pinned at the latest version move with the contract: the check_tx
DashPay fees, the deterministic root hash, the nullifier batch guard
settled roots. Fixture contact requests and profiles get valid labels and
addresses from protocol version 15, and the shielded failing-trigger test
fails a DPNS domain create's parent lookup instead of the contact request
trigger.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static verification of the complete diff at 2ad7f26 found no actionable in-scope defects: DashPay v3 and trigger removal activate only at protocol version 15, with existing validation and migration mechanisms preserving stored-document compatibility. The address-schema metadata finding is fixed, and both withdrawn findings remain withdrawn. No local builds or tests were run; current CI reports successful Rust workspace, wasm32, JavaScript, Swift, and Kotlin checks, with PR Hygiene pending and no failed code checks.

v5.1-dev took v15 changelog note 23 for checking an identity create's
identity id in basic structure (#5770). The DashPay v3 note becomes 24,
after it, and its references follow: note 3's bindings remark, the
validation_and_processing and system_data_contracts comments, and the
protocol change comment in perform_events_on_first_block_of_protocol_change.
The validation_and_processing comment keeps v5.1-dev's identity create
clause.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static verification of dd279c5 found no blocking defects: DashPay v3 and trigger removal activate together at protocol 15, with historical schemas and stored encodings preserved. One non-blocking coverage gap remains: the DashPay integration tests always populate both optional payment addresses. Current CI reports successful Rust workspace, wasm32, JavaScript, Swift, and Kotlin checks; PR Hygiene remains pending, and no local builds or tests were run.

In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/tests/document/dashpay_v3.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/tests/document/dashpay_v3.rs:130-142: Pin that a profile without payment addresses stays valid at v15
  The replacement rules must preserve acceptance of profiles that omit either or both optional payment addresses. `Fixture::profile()` always populates both addresses, and the other DashPay address-validation cases do the same, so the new end-to-end coverage does not pin this compatibility requirement. Existing DPP unit tests already verify that a missing `byteAt` operand reads as zero and satisfies this form of rule; the remaining gap is acceptance through the actual DashPay schema and transition pipeline. Add cases omitting each address individually and both together, asserting successful creation at protocol 14 and latest, plus successful replacement that removes the addresses.

Both profile payment addresses are optional. The protocol v14 trigger
checked only an address that is present, and from protocol v15 a missing
one reads as 0 in its rule's byteAt, which the rule allows. Every profile
the DashPay tests wrote had both addresses, so nothing checked this through
the real schema and transition pipeline. The new test creates a profile
without the core address, the platform address or both, at protocol
versions 14 and latest, then replaces it to add them and again to remove
them.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static review of the complete diff at f974f3f found no actionable in-scope defects: DashPay v3 and trigger removal are confined to protocol 15, with historical selectors and stored document encodings preserved. The optional-address regression coverage and restored schema metadata address the two outstanding prior findings; the other two remain withdrawn. No local builds or tests were run; current CI reports no failed code checks, with Rust workspace tests still pending and wasm32 tests, JavaScript builds/lint/tests, Kotlin tests, and the Swift schema check passing.
