feat: provider contract 1.3.0 context: cache_dir, env_file, target_defaults (RFC #466 PR A1) - #467
Conversation
…faults (RFC #466 PR A1) Wire 1.3.0 (additive minor; the CLI still speaks 1.2.0/1.1.0/1.0.0): - cache_dir on every context: <LABELLE_HOME>/providers/<canonical id>/, keyed by the normalised pinned repository (github.com/<owner>/<name>) or a local provider's real directory, created by the CLI and persistent. - env_file on before-generate, after-generate and before-build hooks: the hook may write {"set":[...],"path_prepend":[...]}. Contributions merge in hook order, override the inherited env, conflict loudly, dedupe PATH entries, fold case on Windows, and reach the generation-time fingerprint pass, the compile and every later hook, never a provider tool's build. CLI-owned names are a fixed table (config.reserved_env) with a guard test over every LABELLE_* name the source spells. - Manifest .target_defaults: owner-only, once per target; an explicit --optimize wins; the wire optimize is the effective mode; the watched replan recomputes it. The core wasm ReleaseSafe fallback stays behind it. Guard: scrubbed legacy serve wording from material_toolchain.zig, prebuild.zig and provider_hooks.zig; allowlist 53 -> 50. Forward hook contributions into Docker builds
For every --docker build, pipeline.zig deliberately leaves zig_env_ptr null, so this branch discards all accumulated hook contributions; the subsequent docker.runBuild call also accepts no environment map or --env forwarding. A successful before generate or before build hook can therefore provision variables that later hooks see but the in-container zig build never receives, causing environment-dependent Docker builds to fail despite the contract promising contributions to later core builds. Forward the contributions into the container, or explicitly reject this combination rather than silently ignoring them.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Addressed in 8a82567, by refusing rather than forwarding. PR B refuses --docker for provider targets (D5), so A1 doesn't build container env forwarding. If --docker is set and the plan for the target has a hook that may contribute an environment (a before-generate, after-generate or before-build hook whose provider negotiates wire 1.3.0+), the pipeline refuses right after planning, before any hook, generation or build. It names the hook and prints --docker doesn't carry provider environment contributions; build without --docker (install.providerBypass, provider_hooks.planContributor). A target_defaults mode is not bypassed here: build.zig passes the effective optimize to docker.runBuild, which emits -Doptimize=<mode> in the container. Tests: the providerBypass unit test, a planContributor unit test (slot and <1.3 cases), and an e2e in test/provider_hooks_e2e.py (refused, with no hook log and no generation).

Carry the contributed SDL2 path into DLL staging
When a Windows desktop hook supplies LABELLE_SDL2_LIB—which this change explicitly permits—the composed map lets zig build link against that SDL2 installation, but stageSdl2DllBesideExe later searches only config.globalEnviron(), not compile_env. Unless the same DLL also exists in the inherited environment or Labelle cache, it is not copied beside the executable; the core launch intentionally does not inherit hook contributions either, so the successfully built game then fails to start with the loader's FileNotFound. Pass the contributed SDL2 location to the staging step.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 8a82567. stageSdl2DllBesideExe now takes the compile's environment (compile_env: the inherited one with the hooks' contributions merged on top) and reads LABELLE_SDL2_LIB from it through sdl_provision.sdl2LibDir, so a contributed value wins over the inherited one. It falls back to the process environment only when no build env exists. Test: SDL2 DLL staging reads LABELLE_SDL2_LIB from the build's merged environment covers the lookup and both DLL layouts on every OS.

Preserve the last good hook environment across failed rebuilds
When a watched rebuild fails before its contributing hooks run—for example during the ownership precheck, prebuild, or replan—this reset destroys the environment from the last successful build, even though the server keeps serving that build and retains its hook plans. When the server later stops, finishServe runs the current generation's after run hooks through this same accumulator, so they receive either no contributions or a partial environment from a failed attempt rather than the environment associated with the retained build. Accumulate each rebuild into temporary state and install it only after the rebuild succeeds, or restore the previous accumulator on failure.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 8a82567. rebuildStaged builds the rebuild's environment in a fresh accumulator and installs it only when the whole rebuild succeeds. Any failure (pre-check, prebuild, replan, a hook, the compile) discards it and restores the last successful build's environment, so the served build and the session's after run hooks keep it. Test: watched rebuild keeps the last good hook environment unless the whole rebuild succeeds covers a failed pre-check, a failure after the contributing hook ran, a success replacing it, and a removed hook leaving nothing.

Pass the resolved optimize mode to the iOS builder
When the provider that owns the ios target declares a target_defaults mode, this calculation puts that mode in the hook context, but the pipeline returns through ios.handleIos before constructing the normal optimized zig_args. iosBuild then launches its own zig build with no optimize flag unless the separate --release switch was supplied, so an ordinary labelle ios build or labelle ios run compiles in Debug while its hooks are told the provider-selected mode. Thread effective_optimize into the iOS builder, retaining the existing explicit release override as appropriate.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Addressed in 8a82567. The path is reachable: labelle ios sets platform_override = "ios" (cli.zig), and discoverAndPlan/confirmTarget refuse it unless a pinned provider owns ios, so the legacy build always runs with a provider owner. Refusing on ownership alone would therefore disable labelle ios entirely, which is out of scope for an additive minor. Instead labelle ios refuses, before any hook or generation, when the plan has a hook that may contribute an environment, or when the owner declares an optimize default for ios. Its own zig build carries neither. The message points to labelle build --platform=ios, which does carry both (install.providerBypass). Tests: the providerBypass unit test and two e2e cases in test/provider_hooks_e2e.py (contributing hook; defaults only).

Apply hook contributions to the legacy iOS build
For the ios target, a before generate or after generate hook can populate this accumulator, but the early ios.handleIos branch never composes it into an environment. Its iosBuild function calls runner.runZig, which uses only the inherited process environment, so the later core zig build cannot see any SDK, compiler, or PATH values that the hooks provisioned even though later hook processes do. Pass a composed environment through handleIos and use the environment-aware Zig runner.

…od rebuild env (RFC #466 PR A1, review round 1) - --docker refuses a plan with a hook that may contribute an environment (contributing slot, provider on wire 1.3.0+) before any hook or build; it already passes the effective optimize as -Doptimize. - The legacy `labelle ios` build (its own zig build after generation) refuses such a plan, and a target owner's optimize default, pointing at `labelle build --platform=ios`. - SDL2.dll staging reads LABELLE_SDL2_LIB from the compile's merged environment, so a contributed value wins over the inherited one. - A watched rebuild builds its env aside and installs it only on success; any failure restores the last successful build's environment. Do not reject generate-only Docker invocations
When a project has a wire-1.3 contributing hook, this unconditional check also rejects labelle generate --docker. That command is accepted by parseDirAndScene, and the pipeline returns immediately after generate.run, so it never invokes the container build whose missing environment forwarding motivates this guard; its only Zig consumer is the host-side tests fingerprint pass, which already receives hook_site.env. Limit the Docker rejection to commands that actually proceed to docker.runBuild, otherwise an existing generate-only workflow now fails unnecessarily.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in c041c19. The --docker refusal now applies only to commands that reach docker.runBuild (build, run, bundle, and the legacy serve command, per install.reachesContainerBuild). labelle generate --docker proceeds, and its host-side fingerprint pass receives the contributions. Tests: the providerBypass unit test (generate with a contributor is null; build/run/bundle refuse) and an e2e in test/provider_hooks_e2e.py where generate --docker succeeds and a later hook sees the contributed value, beside the existing build --docker refusal.

Diagnose oversized environment files as hook failures
When a successful hook writes an otherwise valid env_file larger than 1 MiB, this undocumented read limit rejects it before parseFile and absorbEnvFile's hook-specific error handling run. The raw filesystem/read error therefore escapes without the promised hook '<package>/<id>' wrote an invalid env_file diagnostic, and the progress reporter is not transitioned to failed. Either make the size limit part of validation with a named diagnostic or remove it so valid contract documents are accepted.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in c041c19. The 1 MiB cap is now provider_env.max_file_bytes, and hitting it is an invalid file: labelle: hook '<id>' wrote an invalid env_file: the file is larger than the 1048576-byte cap, with the progress feed marked failed. Oversized, empty, malformed and reserved files all go through one shared path (provider_hooks.rejectEnvFile). The cap is documented in the contract. Test: provider_hooks_env_test.zig lowers it through the Site.env_file_cap seam, checks that the file is rejected before the next hook runs, and checks that the same file under the real cap is accepted.

Escape reserved device stems before the extension
On Windows, a valid GitHub repository segment such as con.tools is detected as reserved, but appending ~ produces con.tools~, whose stem is still con and therefore remains an uncreatable Windows device name according to windowsReservedDeviceName. Every 1.3 provider invocation for such a repository then fails while creating cache_dir; place the escape before the first dot or prefix the segment so the resulting stem is no longer reserved.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in c041c19. A reserved device stem is now escaped before its first dot (con becomes con~, con.tools becomes con~.tools, whose stem con~ is no device), and a trailing dot gets ~ after it (name. becomes name.~, con. becomes con~.~). No GitHub name contains ~, so this stays collision-free; the scheme is documented in provider_cache.zig and the contract. The unit test covers every reserved name (con, prn, aux, nul, conin$, conout$, com1-9, lpt1-9) bare, with one and two extensions, and with a trailing dot, in both cases. It asserts the result is not reserved, has no trailing dot, and differs from the input only by the inserted ~; near misses are left alone.
…stems (RFC #466 PR A1, review round 2) - --docker refuses a contributing plan only for commands that reach the container build (build, run, bundle, the legacy serve); `labelle generate --docker` proceeds, and its host-side fingerprint pass gets the env. - An env_file over the 1 MiB cap is an invalid file: the same "hook '<id>' wrote an invalid env_file" diagnostic naming the cap, and the progress feed marked failed (one shared rejection path). - A reserved Windows device stem is escaped before its first dot (con.tools -> con~.tools), a trailing dot after it (name. -> name.~). Allow Docker invocations whose build is replaced
When a target owner supplies a replace build hook and an earlier hook can contribute an environment, build.run executes the replacement and breaks before the docker.runBuild branch, while provider hook processes already receive the accumulated environment. This command therefore never enters the container path that cannot carry the contribution, but reachesContainerBuild classifies it solely by command and rejects valid build --docker or run --docker invocations. Include whether the build plan has a replacement when deciding if the container build is actually reached.

Fixed in c38f4a4. providerBypass now also takes build_replaced (hook_plans.build.replace != null). When the target owner replaces build, the replacement stands in for the container build and receives the contributions like every other hook, so --docker is no longer refused. Tests:

Roll back replanned hook state with the environment
When a watched edit successfully replans providers/hooks but the subsequent generate, hook, or compile fails, this catch restores only the previous environment. WatchReplan.run has already installed the new providers, config, optimize mode, plans, lock, and run_after; when the server later stops, shutdownRunAfter therefore runs the new generation's after-run hooks against the old served artifact and this restored old environment. The fresh evidence beyond the prior environment-reset issue is that the replan is committed before coreBuild can fail. Keep the replan generation transactional until the rebuild succeeds, or snapshot and restore all replanned state here.

src/cli/config.zig, notprovider_contract.zig. It has to spellLABELLE_EMSDKandLABELLE_SDL2_LIB, so putting it in the platform-neutral contract would have added a guard allowlist entry.config.zigis already on the allowlist and stays in the final set of 32.
